MQM candidate leads in NA-246 unofficial poll results

KARACHI: The counting of votes started soon after the polling ended for the fiercely contested NA-246 by-election at 5pm, after a day of polling amid unprecedented security. Rangers personnel have been closely monitoring the counting process behind closed doors as no unauthorised person was allowed to enter the premises.
According to the unofficial and unconfirmed results obtained by DawnNews, MQM candidate Kunwar Naveed is leading with more than 14,000 votes followed by PTI’s Imran Ismail and Rashid Naseem of JI.
213 polling stations were set up with 769 polling booths housed in 55 buildings, for 357,861 registered voters. Around 2,556 policemen will provide security in the constituency, whereas Rangers personnel were also deployed at almost all polling stations.
Although 14 candidates are in the run, but the by-poll is largely a three-way contest between Kanwar Naveed Jameel of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), Imran Ismail of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and Rashid Naseem of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI).
The involvement of MQM chief Altaf Hussain, PTI Chairman Imran Khan and JI Emir Sirajul Haq has turned what is just a simple by-election for one seat into an electoral battlefield of national importance.

The constituency is considered to be an MQM bastion because its headquarters Nine Zero is located there and the party had emerged victorious in all three previous general elections in 2002, 2008 and 2013 and in a by-election in May 2004. It comprises Federal B. Area, Federal Capital Area and parts of Liaquatabad.
The seat fell vacant after MQM’s Nabeel Gabol resigned from the National Assembly.

I just hope and pray that rangers don't play any role in the results of this bye election and is true representation of the wishes of the constituents. In my opinion powers given to rangers of surveillance withing polling booth and power of magistrate are beyond what should be given in a democratic elections and can be abused.

If people themselves don't change their faith, no one in the earth can do it. It is a golden chance for the people to refuse those who have destroyed this city so that they can learn a lesson. Single party has controlled Karachi for over 30 years and what we got are nothing except ransom, kidnapping, murder etc. The youngsters who were best lot in the country with respect to education were encouraged for corruption and forgery to pass instead of gaining knowledge. We can only see negatives over this period of 30 years, positive is only for corrupt leaders of the party ruling this city when they become billionaire from waiter.

Good, all the changes should come through ballot box not through bullet. Whoever wins the seat matters the least, the fact is that a change has come where use of force is likely to be replaced with free polls. I think MqM has more chances to win but PTI has been successful in changing the dynamics in the constituency. Congratulation to democracy which is the actual winner.

The ECP is not an independent body, this was clearly demonstrated in 2013 elections and is being further enhanced by current NA 246 by elections. Every effort is being made to discourage the voters to vote. If this ECP has any credibility why she did not did so in any previous elections. The facts are that strings are being pulled from somewhere else. I am not from MQM nor their sympathiser, but an observer. Can this country ever stand shoulder to shoulder with rising societies in developing countries, let alone develop countries, I doubt it. A nation which lives on falls hope, misguided dementia needs prayers, and I am doing so. God help Pakistan.

Establishment's think-tanks putting last efforts like 1) Starting polling very late in areas where MQM has concentration after hours of official polling time, 2) Slowing down the process of casting votes by making 4 polling booths in a 10x10 room (MQM Areas only), 3) Excessive and repeated checking, body searches of voters and questioning by authorities (MQM concentrated Areas only), 4) Moulding media to stop, delay and curtail such reports from polling stations

It is high time that people realize that votes should be cast for those who serve the people. I voted for Dr Arif Alvi in elections 2013 from NA-250 and am still waiting to see if he uses his resources to develop the poor and underdeveloped areas of NA-250 such as Qayyumbad, where I live, Delhi Colony, Gizri. and Shirin Jinnah Colony. This does not imply that I am rooting for the MQM. Mustafa Kamal of MQM served the citizens of Karachi well. If Nawaz Sharif succeeds in developing Pakistan with the help of the Chinese in the next three years, well , come 2018, matters will be a foregone conclusion. A word for Khan Sahib, Do not pin your success on the weaknesses of the PML-N but build up on your strengths. Serve the people of Pakistan now and reap the fruits in 2018.

Deploying Rangers in polling stations solves only one part of the problem. Harresment before the elections and potential consequences of voting for the 'wrong' side after the election still exist. It is the job of the ECP to adress these issues... however I am not hopefull without its major rehauling.

how nice it would be that no rangers no camera no security, voters goto atm type kiosk, put thumb on machine. thumbs gets authenticated from nadra db. candidates names or signs shows up on screen and voters put finger just like when selcting current account or saving account while taking money out and .thats it screen goes blank no rigging no bogus vote.is it that difficult to implement.well IT people would say such system can get implemented in a month or two. :)

This is going to be the test case because despite all possible arrangement by ECP the losing candidates will surely reject the results amid rigging allegations. There is a capacity aspect when conducting polls that we can not hold election on one single seat that all the contesting parties feels satisfied about the polling arrangements. Also there is a moral aspect that the losing candidates/parties should accept their defeat with big heart and avoid indulging in allegations game. But I know the result will not be challenged and there will be demands of repolling, recounting and forensic tests and repeat of all that what we have been witnessing since election 2013.

Rangers should check each ballot after voter cast his vote and reject all votes except for vote for PTI. Only then Ik term it fair and free election. I am strict opposer of MQM but believe that if with the help of rangers MQM loose this seat, then it will be a start of new 1971

Pakistan don't need Naya Pakistan, what we need is a revolution against all the enemies of the state (including politicians,so called religious parties, madresas for terrorism, etc.) and use capital punishment against them and then start new.
IK's of Naya Pakistan with corrupt politicians is bound to fail but by the time we realize that he is also failed, another 25 years will be gine and then there may be no Pakistan to start fresh....

Is there any doubt now how clashes are engineered in Karachi. Just when mqm had conclusively proved its position, just when PTI and mqm leaders had exchanged pleasantries, just when mqm workers had started celebrating, clashes were initiated in Karimabad so that the shame of loss can be drowned into renewed shouting about mqm's so called strong arm tactics. PTI and JI, for once, need to come out openly and graciously say that they lost.

Even without rigging MQM wins the election by huge margin, at least it has been proved that MQM wins the election without rigging. In Pakistan every party involves in rigging but its not mean, their vote bank does not exists, they have their followings. I think through this MQM's victory, the pressure on MQM would be declined much.

IK should not waste his time in Khi, people of Khi do not want to change their living conditions, maybe they are happy and used to existing in polluted environment. When people cannot distinguish between good and evil it is better to leave them on their own. What has this party given to them that they keep on voting for them. Constituency is so dirty and lacks basic amenities even then they keep on bringing the same people again and again, cannot find any sense in it.

Strange….despite having Rangers, Police, Army, Sind Govt. and media on the side of PTI……the Naya Pakistan could not dent MQM and infact was left with a bloodied nose.
Maybe the writing is indeed on the wall…….Karachiates have rejected PTI with a resounding resolve.
Personally my two cents…best convasing for MQM was done by Rangers itself , it was eye opening to see their naked ethnic bias against Karachiates.
