Islam forbids violence, Ka’aba Imam tells Lahore congregation

LAHORE: Imam of the Ka’aba Dr Shaikh Khalid Al Ghamidi during a sermon at the mosque in Lahore's Bahria Town told the congregation that Islam forbade violence and terrorism.
Addressing the congregation before the commencement of Friday prayers, he said Islam preached peace and tolerance and that believers should respect religious differences and live in harmony with others.
He said people of all faiths should be able to live in harmony in an Islamic country, adding that there was no compulsion in religion. He urged the congregation to be patient, kind and compassionate and practice self-correction.
The Imam also emphasised the importance of seeking knowledge and acquiring an education.
After delivering the sermon, the Imam led Friday prayers at the Grand Mosque — the largest mosque in Pakistan — where thousands had gathered to catch a glimpse of the Imam and listen to his sermon.

Strict security arrangements had been made for the momentous occasion during which the Imam said a special prayer for Pakistan.
The purpose of the Imam's visit is stated to be promotion of polio vaccination campaign in Pakistan and supporting various religious, political and social leaders in their efforts to eradicate the virus from the country.

What a soul and a fine person, man of authentic knowledge and practices, unlike the majority in Pakistan that practice hearsay Islam. Learning is continuous thus we must continue to correct our selves, this is the only weapon against extremism and violence.

Really sad that his own country does not listen to his message. People of Yemen are poor and they can not defend themselves - the leadership should do the utmost to help them and stop the killing of these defenseless people.

Alhamdulillah-Sheikh Khalid's visit is a great honor for us. Such visits should be done regularly as this will help in promoting sectarian harmony. If the Sheikhs of Kaaba and Madina had set up institutions from the beginning to teach and train islamic scholars from all muslim countries there would have been much fewer sects today. They should also have sent Arab sheikhs to all countries to teach Arabic and Islamic Theology. It was an obligation on them which they have not fulfilled. Still they can start an Islamic University here and send their scholars to teach under their patronage.

He makes good point. However, his messaging is weak. He has to go on social media and compete with ISIS and other organizations that are contrary to his message. These organizations are more dangerous than any other differences between various sects of Islam. Social media will influence young minds before they get corrupted by mullahs in mosques.

Perhaps, the Imam should give such lectures at his home base in Kingdom of Saud to the rulers of that country as well. Live in harmony with your neighbors and stop the aerial attacks on Yemen.

"believers should respect religious differences" - this is utterly lacking in muslim countries. This respect to an extent will be there only in secular countries. Why so many countries are no secular? Why fear it so much? Is it insecurity?

@gul - Saudia Arabia is an exclusionary country. Thousands of Syrian Arabs are languishing in refugee camps in Jordan but not a single refugee is allowed to entre in Saudi kingdom.

@Blue Saffron It is most progressive and peaceful religion of its time when it was gifted to humanity. But instead of improving and keeping pace with time. Its followers frozen it and introduced tribal customs and local customs and corrupted the religion. It is time to wake up and interpret as per the changed time and conditions also shun extreme fundamentalism. This is essential for survival of Islam and bring glory to it and remove violent religion tag and bring overall progress to Muslims and they shall become positive contributors to overall advancement of humanity as they were in early part of Islamic history.

There were historical personalities who preached peace and took all measures humanly possible to live their lives that way to set an example.They are universally recognized and acknowledged?
I think Mahatma Gandhi and Buddha would fit the bill?
Don't Pakistanis feel any connection with these exemplars right from the subcontinent?
Do they have to turn to S Arabia to understand what non violence is all about? Right when the Middle East is awash with blood and conflict?:(
