Pakistan cricket at lowest point in international history: Ramiz Raja

Cricket commentator and former Test captain Ramiz Raja has described Pakistan's hammering at the hands of Bangladesh as "embarrassing" and the "lowest point in our international history".
He said pressure was on the green-shirts to re-invent themselves and keep Bangladesh at a distance during the upcoming Test series between the two countries.
In an interview with ESPNCricinfo, Ramiz Raja expressed his disappointment in the "lack of direction" and the lack of "fresh ideas" from the Pakistan Cricket Board which had rendered the national cricket team as a "rudderless ship".
His comments followed Pakistan's 0-3 ODI whitewash, and a loss in the only T20 international played during the ongoing tour of Bangladesh.

The drubbing was the culmination "of a badly thought out strategy", according to the former cricketer who criticised the PCB's 'outdated strategy' of keeping wickets in hand and then going hard in the last 10 overs.
Raja said that the country is no longer churning out the same assembly line of talent as they did in the past, and even if any player comes through they are not "used properly" by the team management.
He said that the emerging lot of players are "timid" and have a boxed in mentality. He pointed out flaws in the players brought up, and said that they [the players] ─ having technical and mental issues ─ do not know how to construct an innings.
The former national captain said that Pakistan cricket needs a tonic of aggression, and its overall strategy needs to be improved.
He said he had expected Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez top lose their bowling potency after they returned to international cricket with a remodeled action.
The only silver lining seen by the cricket commentator is the emergence of newly-appointed captain Azhar Ali as the top run-getter, with a century and a half-century in three innings.
Talking about the upcoming two-match Test series between hosts Bangladesh and Pakistan which begins in Khulna on April 28, Ramiz said, "I think Bangladesh should be relentless as this a golden chance for them to create history."
He added, "Pakistan have been hit by losses and injuries and it's going to be a real challenge. It's going to be difficult as things can't change dramatically as the coaching staff is the same; most of the players are same."

There are no quick fixes to these problems unfortunately.the best thing would be to let the team mgmt try to gel the players together and see the results. For example we don't have a poisonous spinner for example. Ajmal should be out. Bring in other spinners. Give these batsmen more chances. They should've figured out by now that given their bowling strength they need to be scoring extra 50-60 runs each time.

He is clueless about the basics of cricket match management. What PCB got to do with the strategy of planning a match?
It is the captain ,the coach and the pre-match team meeting that decides the strategy for each match. It is new to me that some one who should know better ,saying such an absurd thing.
The team is doing fine. Yes doing fine.
New players have to have some time to find their place in the new setup, their own playing style and strength in an international arena. Be patient and give them time and space.
The coaches got to learn to respect them as grown up human beings . They deserve respect and freedom to sculpture their own profile . Half of these will be stars of to morrow if they learn to hold their nerve and learn to manage a bad day at the office.

The entire mafia of Najim Sethi should be removed and Sher Yar should take some rest at this age.
Winning and loosing is a habit and the current management has drilled in loosing habits in the team.

Revamp the whole system. Introduce something on the line of IPL, even if we have to play it in Dubai. Fresh ideas will only come from fresh minds and not old minds like Sheheryar. Employ people like Wasim Akram, Rameez Raja. You will have to pay them more to give incentive but then quality is an expensive commodity. And last thing, no interference in the selection of players, coach or selectors.

It's was NOT just simple 4-0 loss but utterly one sided matches where at no point Pakistan had any hope of wining any of 4 matches !
NO match was like won by few runs or few wickets but Bangladesh won all 4 with BONUS point margins !
I think after test it will be 7-0 including practice match !

Get rid of Waqar Younus from the head coach, and team will start florishing. If something like this would have happened to any of the western countries in any sports, the head coach would be the one to get fired first, but seems like Waqar has a big parchi, and stays there despite others get changed.

I have rarely seen articles from R. Raja praising Pakistani cricket or players, even when then team was in top 3. Would be worthwhile to share your knowledge with the PCB board of directors by providing your solutions an implementation plan. Otherwise any one can type can criticize, show your value and give something back to the country which has given you name and fame.

The key difference I notice in PK VS BANG.
Pk players seem clueless how to play. The commentator said it best when he said "Pk players look like they are playing street cricket". As in the openers trying to hit sixes on very single ball and thus predictable vs Bang players play fluidly, rotate the strike and occasionally go for the 6. I think that PK players are talented more then Bang but I guess I would have to blame Waqar for failing to guide the players, to teach them cricket strategy 101.It is also Waqars responsibility to tell each player what his role is and what we expect. Openers are different then middle order, closers etc but its seems that again the team has no personality its patches of players put into slots. Finally domestic structure is weak, from age 6-18 players should be taught fundamentals, strategy,etc. They all look like street cricketers trying to hit the moon. Simply said they are playing like amateurs not professionals.

Well,
PCB can start organizing local cricket tournaments at District levels and groom talent. This is the only way. PCB officials should actively participate in talent hunting by going to these matches to see how players are doing. This is where raw talent exists.
Once found, the raw talent needs special training for grooming. So, PCB needs to have regular camps for grooming such talents.
It helps if countries in the region play regular matches. Looking at the political situation between India and Pakistan, that seems unlikely.

Pakistan has a dilemma. The best available talent Shehzad, Haris and Azhar are all slow batters. Umar Akmal is the only one who is suited to the modern requirements of limited over game. Just look at the strike rate of Shehzad (72) and Haris Sohail (77) and you can understand what I mean. The one with least chance of improving is Haris who can only play nudges, cuts and harmless flicks of the pads. He has no imposing shots at all. But the fact that he is consistant among others, makes it much difficult for selectors to leave him out. Shehzad is very poor at balls which are out side the off and specially those which are leaving him. They both are young and can improve if they get a lot of domestic T20 games. They must improve their strike rate to 85+. otherwise there must be replacements for them. Umar Akmal must bat at 3 or 4 and Shoaib Malik must be getting his cricket kit ready to have an other go. Now the time has come, where bulk of the runs must be scored at the top.

No one speaks about our bowling. One can understand Ajmal and Hafeez not being effective but our fast bowler got hammered in each and every match. Junaid Khan has never been a limited over bowler and again in Bangladesh he leaked runs as if he was playing T20. Strange that they were consistant in bowling short and in whole series, non of them bowled a single yorker. Umar Gul is surely a name of the past and Junaid must never be played in ODIs. Bangladesh scored 329/50 overs, 240/3 in 38 overs and finally 250/2 in 39 overs. Does it tell anything about our bowling, specially when the head coach is a bowler?

What is embarrassing about the defeat by Bangladesh? It is a good team that is likely to send a cold shiver through the veins of the Indian team. Some years ago, a English supporters club came up with a bright idea (in jest) that it is the supporters and NOT the team that win matches. Judged by that criterion the Pak cricket team is a lost cause. Far too many Pak supporters criticise everything and everyone connected with the Pak cricket. I suspect it is supporters that need to change their attitude for the team to start winning.

@Canada - PAK needs combination of experience and youth and they don't have experience players like Malik, Razzaque, Younus ... to guide the youth at the filed. 202 for 2 to 250 all out shows there was none in the middle to take the score to 300+ which is needed these days to win one day game.

@Canada There are a number of new faces in Bangladesh cricket who are better than the new faces in Pakistan team. The 19 year old Taskin Ahmed, the 20 year old Sabir and the 22 year old Somya Sarkar are brilliant. They will go a long way for Bangladesh. also there are a few raring to go at international level. The average age for Bangladesh team should be lowest in the world. The problem is Pakistan has stopped producing the talents it used to. If talents are blooming in the 30s or in the late 20s. That speaks for the standard of cricket in Pakistan.

You can't blame a few injuries when a country of close to 200 million people, with over 60 years of test cricket history perform like mice. The reasons are the same as what reduced us from being the unbeatable world hockey champions to erratic, second tier performers - unmeritocratic decisions starting top-down from the Pakistan Cricket Board. Successive governments, including this one, use the Pakistan Cricket Board appointments as a political favour.

Unfortunately Mr Ramiz Raja's comments themselves reflect the mediocrity that has plagued Pakistan cricket for a long time. Before the Australia-Pakistan series last year Mr Raja had suggested that Misbah should retire because he had not done well against Sri Lanka. Well Misbah showed what he was capable when he played the Australians. He really made Mr Raja eat his words. Again and again Mr Raja has been critical of Misbah's defensive approach. Unfortunately as we have seen Pakistan at present does not have powerful hitters capable of big scores. Even Afridi has failed to live up to his promise. What about Umar Akmal? Every time he tries to hit out we know the end result. Mr Raja, it is easy to criticise. But how about some concrete suggestions?

@ahmad What ever Pakistan was doing for last 5 years holding on to fort was because of one man Army Misbah.Rest were to making numbers needed to create 11 players needed to play as team.Provide solution,not typical criticism behind key board which is easy.Reality check is that Pakistan key bowlers from World Cup were on injured list and team was put in phase where whole bunch of new players were bumped into key position and two senior players were trying to learn to bowl with new action.Bring back fit Irfan,Ameer and Bangladesh will be back to stage where they were before.In batting Fawaad Alaam and Hafeez were big disaster and bottle necks for Pakistan ODI.Azhar Ali,Mukhtar Ahmed,Sami Aslam,Babar Azaam,Md Rizwan has come to stay in future squad.No problem with these guys.In Test cricket Pakistan team still has Misbah,Azhar Ali,Asad Shafiq,Babar Azaam.Bowling still determined by spinners in Asian cricket so Pakistan has line up to rattle Bangladesh badly in reality of Test cricket.

It all started when Waqar Younus took over from Dave Whatmore in June 2014. Pakistan ICC ranking was # 4 now it is # 8. PCB cannot fire him as there is a clause in the contract that PCB will have to pay the full two years salary if they fire him for whatever reason. This sort of agreement is not made even in USA/European corporate sector. One month notice from either party is enough. The damage is already done, PCB can start a "pay-off head coach" drive, they will have the money within a few days.

Ramiz's analysis is pretty much all over the place most of the times. It shows up many times during his commentary. Lot of superficial and grand words but no substance. Our best players never really were produced via the first class games in Pakistan. Imran Khan was very vocal and he never believed in or played first class cricket.
The natural talent is there. It is a matter of identifying that talent and grooming it. Technical flaws can be overcome. Look at Dhoni, Malinga, Shiv Chanderpaul , Suhail Tanvir. On technical correctness, none of them will ever get selected.
We don't have captains and coaches like before who could identify raw talents like Wasim, Waqar Inzimam and then groom them. The selection policies are not consistent. Dressing room environment created by senior players like Afridi is poisonous. There is no emphasis on fielding and physical fitness as it requires hard-work.
Unfortunately, it doesn't look like these things can be fixed anytime soon.

End the "Discrimination", allow the talent from EVERY province of the country, based on merit. Do some hard work on finding talent, camps, tournaments, find talent, and then GROOM them, spend $$$ on them. You need to identify talent, motivate them, educate them (fitness, nutrition, strategy, planning) , groom them, guide them, mentor them !!

Its going to be a 2-0 white wash in test series too. with this performance i dont think we can beat even B teams of cricket playing nations. May be Pakistan should start playing tournaments that involve Afghanistan, Scotland, Ireland, Holland etc.

People like you also have contribution to bring Pakistan team in this situation. You said big things about Umar Amin, compare him with Viv Richards. He was always flop. You run movement against Sarfraz Ahmed and Fawad Alam. After 10 years FA still not perm. member reagardless of his good perf.
People like must stay away from commentary.

This downfall of Pakistan cricket didn't happen overnight. We have been simply sweeping the dust under the carpet for last 10 years .. I'm glad this is finally getting exposed. Acknowldging that Pakistan cricket is in trouble is the first step towards inprovement.. I wish pcb and others would have realized this years ago . We need international coach and young team based on merit and above all a netball corruption free PCB or nothing will work .

@Yawar I think without Warner and McCullum Pakistan has won 2-0 series against Australia recently in Test cricket same time when Pakistan were beaten in ODI and T20 against same Australians.Please don't mix up between Test Cricket and ODI/T20.

Mr Raja, You could have been a better option but your problem is not different from others. You came in Pakistan team just because of your brother Waseem Raja, you prefer Akmals because of your relations with them and domicile, If you could be honest to Pakistan, (which I doubt), you are far better then all of these board members.
With your influence in India and other countries, you can send some under 19 players to different countries and let them learn batting and fielding.
Give international exposure to under 19 cricketers. Prepare a team for next world cup and become a legend of this game. Keep yourself away from "PARCHEE and personal LIKING and DISLIKING"

Lots of dot balls-non rotating of strike and playing selfishly to sustain ones position-defensive attitude all along. Threat of being dropped again. These are mental and technical issues. Non-creations of back ups and secondary lines, poor physical fitness programs. Lack of motivation , strategy and direction-lumped together: whitewash by Bangladesh who in most of the areas have no international ranking.

@Ero Dear! How many test matches India has won outside India even when Tendulker was in team. It is easy to criticize, Pakistan has been going going through a war for last decade which has very bad effect on its cricket as well. A time will come when Pakistan will again the best team in the world.

Pakistan only could win 1 match and lost 6 on the tour of Australia in 1992-93 after world cup captain was Mr. Miandad
Loosing test and one-day Home series to Sri Lanka in 1995 (and the captain was Mr. Clean Ramiz Raja)
Loosing Sahara Cup 4-1 to India Captain Ramiz Raja
Loosing Test series to Zimbabwe in 1998.
And there are plenty of others but i don't have much time just a mirror to Mr. Clean

Pak cricket it seems goes from one low point to another! The way things are going I forsee cricket ending up the same way as hockey and Pakistan becoming a "second rate" side like th associate nations and having to qualify for future world cups. The root cause for the malady that afflicts Pak cricket is greed, corruption and meddling by the Government of this institution. There is way too much money in cricket for the greedy politicians like Nawaz and Zardari and their cronies like Najam Shethi to leave it alone and in the hands of people actually who know something about the game!

Sorry to see the declining state of cricket in Pakistan. I sincerely hope this is a passing phase and not a permanent damage.
I still remember my school days in the 1970's where we went to the cricket stadium in Chennai(Madras) to see stylish Pakistani players like Zaheer Abbas, Wasim Raja( Rameez Raja's brother).
During the game, Wasim Raja was batting and once when running between wickets, he had a collision with India's wicket keeper syed Kirmani. Tey both hugged each other and holding the other so that the other person doesn't fall.
Most of the Chennai spectators became an instant fan of Wasim Raja and were clapping for every run he made. I am sure Wasim Raja had much better reception and fan club in Chennai than his own home town.
Wasim Raja was a perfect gentleman in the ground.
I hope Pakistan produces more such players.

One must face the fact that the darling of Karachi Fawad Alam and Sarfaraz Ahmad miserable failed in the ODI's to make it into a Banglawash. So people of Karachi must shut up and let the best players play.

I honestly dont understand what najm sethi has to do with this, is he supposed to go out there and bat, bowl and field. Its the players who have to get their act together, dont blame it on the chairman or coach.
