Qaumi Watan Party (QWP) chief and member of National Assembly Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao was targeted in a suicide attack in Charsadda Thursday evening, where he had gone to attend Alamzeb Omerzai's death anniversary, reported DawnNews.

According to reports, a suicide bomber rushed towards his convoy as it was passing through Omerzai area in an apparent attempt to assassinate Sherpao, who remained unharmed.

Sherpao’s son Sikandar Sherpao and a member of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly were also part of the caravan.

According to DPO Charsadda Shafiullah, the attacker first fired at Sherpao’s convoy. When his guards fired back, he blew himself up.

Shafiullah said the blast killed one policeman and there are fears the death toll could rise. He said the suicide bomber was around "22 to 23 years old."

Aftab Ahmad Sherpao’s son Sikandar Sherpao told Dawn.com that his father had visited Charsadda to attend Alamzeb Omerzai’s death anniversary.

“We were on our way back to Peshawar when the attacker targeted the convoy; by the grace of God, my father is safe.”
