From solidarity to justice served, celebs react to Salman Khan's sentencing

Salman Khan's conviction in the September 2002 hit-and-run case is the talk of B-town this morning, and many in the Bollywood fraternity have sent out messages of support and sympathy to the Dabangg actor who now faces five years in prison. Reactions from celebrities poured in as the star's conviction and sentencing was announced.
Rishi Kapoor was among the first to send out a message of solidarity to Salman Khan's family after the sentencing.

While Kapoor's tweet rang a stoic note, others, such as tennis star Sania Mirza, were more despondent.

Dolly Bindra, known for her participation in the reality TV series Bigg Boss, expressed her heartbreak and commiserated with the Khan family.
|
Karan Johar, who had cast Salman Khan in his upcoming production Shuddhi, also sent out a prayer for the Khan's family's strength.
|
More support came in from the fraternity later in the afternoon, as Siddharth Malhotra tweeted words of wisdom to the soon-to-be incarcerated star.
|
Sushmita Sen chimed in with her philosophical take on her Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya co-star's verdict.

One of the sagest comments came from Alia Bhatt earlier in the morning, who summed up the mood of the fraternity.
|
However, some celebrities took a less sympathetic view and called attention to the misery of those affected in the accident.

Musician Salman Ahmed, apparently irked by the sympathy, refused to recognise his heroic status.
|
Then there are others who couldn't help but do some number-crunching and estimate the monetary damage entailing the sentencing.

Of course, the hot topic was also perfect fodder for our comedy circuit...

Twitter controversy: Salman Khan supporters go overboard
No one could have predicted that another controversy would stir up as some of Salman Khan's supporters become a little overzealous in their defence of him.
Jewellery designer Farah Khan tried to steer the conversation away from Salman's drunken destruction and towards the government's inability to provide safe accommodation for the homeless.

However, it wasn't until singer Abhijeet tweeted harsh words about the victims of the hit-and-run that Twitter erupted in uproar. Abhijeet directly blamed the victims for the incident.

Sanjay Dutt did not kill anyone, yet he is being jailed for keeping arms for an underworld, where as in case of Salman Khan, a homeless man lost his life, and four got severely injured. He could have proved his innocence by staying at the scene of accident, instead of fleeing.

Its never to too late to apologize to the bereaved family and hand hold them financially and emotionally. Pardon from the family / payment of blood money might be an option to reach any settlement. May be a public apology also. Just a thought!
Apart from the above, I believe justice has been the winner in this case but at the same time feel sad about Salman's fate. In this testing time, best wishes to for him and his family.

What a pity, no body seems to be thinking about the miseries of the street dwellers. Poor guy crushed in his sleep & sent to graveyard. Justice demands more than what has been handed over to SK. Instead of repenting for his arrogance this hero preferred to put his driver's neck in the gallows, please also shed few drops of tear for the poor soul crushed under the heavy wheels.

No body is superior then the law of the law , definitely I feel sorry for Salman ,but I fee! thousand fold more sorry for that poor person who lost his life and his family is reprieved of so many things. Where all these persons were some 13 yrs ago when that poor man was run over ,they have not expressed a single word of grief and sorrow. These moneyed persons thinking is limited to their equivalent moneyed persons. It is very sad and bad indeed.

Indian Justice system served "justice" to Salman Khan.... earlier it had served "justice" to Sanjay who was also alleged to have provided refuge to some muslims who were fleeing riots, in his home.
I wonder when the same system would provide justice to samjhauta express and the Kashmiris?

My confidence in the system just went up considerably after the verdict. For those sympathizing with Salman, I understand your support( I am a fan too), but if it was the other way around - if a homeless man had run over Salman on the road and broke his foot or injured Salman in some way, would you not be out in arms shouting for justice? If you answered yes, then Salman also deserves to go to jail.

No one should be spared. He is just an actor. It does not matter that he is a good human, some people lost their lives because he was dirinking and driving. He must pay the price. Only 5 years not too bad.
People this mentality to let influential people go scot free for the crime they committed is wrong - justice is served and become strong when applied both to poor and rich equally. Get over your sentiments and think big for country and its people. I wish our rich in Pakistan be held accountable for their actions.

All when seen is the fault of defence his lawyer to be dismissed ,the simple case would have been ,they admitted the accident ok irrelevant who was driving ,quoted some precednts from prevevious such cases ,and ask for leniency and agreed to handsome amount of compensation ,in islamic law Qassass is the solution but in india muslim law is not applied ,the poor people were given 19 lakh ruppees and court should have considered it ,conviction is too harsh in this case seeing the character of Salman his charites etc he must have been given lessr sentence .he did some basic mistakes in case at the scene of accident like kennedy brother in usa ran after not helping a drowning lady etc many such cases.

Salman Khan is a great artist loved by most in the continent. I wish the whole thing had never happened but since it has, we should all pray for the affected on either sides. As for the fans and friends of Salman, please stay strong. THE STAR WILL RISE AGAIN.

@Ahsan Gul Yes the law should apply to all equally, rich or poor. The victim of Salman Khan was not "killed" but died in an accident, thus being guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. It may be that the sentencing period was moderated down to 5 years because of the actor's known humanitarian and charitable acts. There have been quite a few cases in the cities where drunken driving by sons of rich people have resulted in deaths - of who else but those who sleep under the skies and depend on God for their survival.

Drinking and driving is the biggest reason of death after heart attack in the western world and more in USA than any other country. Why? people lose their sense of judgment. What was the fault of the dead man and his fellow worker @ bakery. I personally feel bad for Salman Khan's parents, but the time was yesterday to " educate " the junior.

13 years is a long wait to get justice in the lower judiciary. Salman will never go to jail as he can still go on appealing to high and supereme court and then falling sick every now and then to avoid complete justice. He should have pleaded guilty to prove that he is a real Hero.

Why he did not pay compensation to the families of the people run over when he would have easily paid them hefty amounts to settle out-of-court? Now he must face the justice. However, there is one point to note. Only Sanjay Dutt (possession of illegal weapons) & Shah Rukh Khan (banned from Wankhede Stadium) from the indian film industry have been convicted before. Why only Khans (being muslims) are being victimized while others from the industry go scott-free?

@javeria arif because , even so many evidances were presented, they came up with new story, like driver, driving the car, and second interesting thing is they argued like, the person may not died because of accident , but may be due to process of crane lifting the car , and dropping down, as there is no surity, they argued that he is not criminal :( , he is not feeling guilt for what he done, and not accepted.

@Sarah he got bail only for for 2 days. And no matter what he does, appealing in higher court or supreme court. He's only delaying it, the sentence will remain the same or increase. judicairy is more strict as you go higher-lower court-higher court-supreme court.

I have heard that salman does lot of charity and great work for underprivileged... nobody can take that away, but at the same time he has to admit that he made a horrible mistake that costed 1 man his life.... you can't run away from justice....

There are other examples of Puru Rajkumar, arms dealer Nanda's son who could not be prosecuted due to shortcomings of Indian courts. At the same time, there are examples where justice has been provided to the Kashmiris when excesses were recorded by the Indian army like false encounters. The hindu right-wingers who caused the tragedy in Samjhauta express have also been jailed and serving life sentences just like the Gujarat riot kingpins.
So tell, me are you courts in Pakistan perfect? Do they dispense justice properly every single time (even considering Blasphemy laws, this or that ordinance?).

Salman did the mistake and paying the prize now. We should thank the Police constable who was his body guard to give the proper statement in the court.
Even with a lot of pressure, he didn't change his statement and that is why we could say Justice served. Kudos to the Police constable.
These so called stars shows that they are not real stars but some glitters by sympathizing with Salman. This incident should be an eye opener for all of those glitters. No one should be above the law. Look at the list
Narasimha Rao ( former PM, excellent administrator)
Subharato Roy ( Sahara Group .. much richer than Salman)
Ramalinga Raju ( Who built the Satyam empire .. the prominent IT company)
The list goes one .. Hats off to the Justice system.. Ofcourse there are problems with it .. but with its own limitation, acting like a ray of hope for Indians

It sickens me to see someone who appears to be such a macho, actually is so afraid to pay for his crime that he is willing to lie and put the blame on his driver, just to save his own skin.... I am glad he did not get away, but even if he had, does he really believe that his conscience will not haunt him for the rest of his life and he will never be able to live in peace? Money can get you a good lawyer, it can possibly allow you to bribe your way out of serving a long sentence, but Karma has it's own way of settling the score and that, no money can protect you from.

Why did it take this long to serve justice to those who tragically died? It matters not that the Salman is a bolly "star" who left the scene instead of staying back to assist the victims. So a crime which took place over thirteen years ago is now finally vindicated?
The wheels of the "justice" system in India grind at a sloth's pace ... if this crime was in a developed nation, justice would have been swift - regardless of whether the perpetrator is famous or not. He or she would not be living a life of freedom devoid of sentencing for this long. Salman Khan certainly has it good living footloose and fancy free for all these years in India where he was coddled while the arm of the law's reach was nowhere to be seen for over a decade. No wonder actors like him know how to manipulate the system and get away with murder for eons.

Law should treat all equal. To Farah Khan, Mam in USA also homeless sleep under bridges on roads. It does not mean that if any homeless poor sleeps on road side then rich has a right to run them over and kill. If God has given you money thanks him and consider poor also as human being. If I had been a Judge of case, instead of sending Salman to jail, I would have fined him at least Rs. 1 crore and with that money built some night shelters for homeless people to sleep. That would have helped the society better than keeping any one in jail. I think all rich should be setenced like that and money such collected should go to Pingalwara or other ONGs helping poors and to widows in Brindaban and to Ajmer sharif.

@hypo - Sanjay Dutt was jailed for being in possession of weapons, specifically an AK-56. This is not allowed in India. As far as Salman is conceded, the people who he killed were also Muslims. Why don't you question India when Salman becomes a superstar with market value of hundreds of millions of dollars? You question India when he kills someone and is put behind bars. Please leave religion at home. Its not healthy to view the world through the lens of religion.

If someone has committed a crime he can not escape punishment. No matter how rich and powerful a person is. I salute the courage of police officers,witness,bodyguard,forensic expert and above all lawyers of the victims. They did not succumb to the pressure. I hope this judgement will serve a lesson for all.Salman Khan is doing a lot of charity work but it does not mean killing of a poor person is not a crime.The biggest crime is that you have killed not a person but also a breadwinner for the family.The biggest shocking and surprising fact is no celebrity has sympathy for the dead and injured.My request is to the charity organization that they should help the families of the dead and injured as they are passing thru lot of difficulties.

Unfotunately, I may sound cruel but drivers do not expect roads also are beds to people and instead of noting thi, court justifird occupation of roads and turning them as beds. I may feel sympathy for the people who died and comoensation could be considered but jail sentence is itself very unfair . It is mockery of the law , people can sleep on roads and that is not punished.Anybody could have been in this situation like Salman.
