SUKKUR: The United Doctors Forum (UDF) won the Pakistan Medical Association, Sukkur, election with a big margin defeating the rival Democratic Doctors Alliance (DDA) on Saturday.

It was the first ever election of the Sukkur PMA that came into existence some 30 years ago. The process was supervised by election commissioner Prof Dr Abrar Shaikh, principal of the Ghulam Muhammad Mahar Medical College.

Dr Zahoor Ahmed Soomro of the UDF bagged 343 votes against his DDA rival Dr Agha Samiullah Khan, who polled 74 votes, for the post of president. UDF’s Dr Mehmood Qureshi, had already been declared elected as the general secretary unopposed.

All other UDF candidates also returned with a big margin of votes.

Conceding defeat, DDA chief Dr Agha Samiullah Khan said his group had been running a campaign for the last 15 years for the holding of the election. “It’s our victory that the election has finally been held,” he said. He alleged that DDA candidate for the post of general secretary Dr Sohail Akhtar Jokhio was forced to withdraw from the contest by some influential people who had threatened to transfer him to some far flung area.
