JHANG: The River Jhelum continues to flow in low to medium flood at various points in Jhang district and though it has started receding in the last 48 hours, it has flooded about 40 villages on both sides, inundating standing crops, particularly fodder, and forcing the affected villagers to move to the areas where they can feed their cattle.

The Jhelum enters district Jhang near village Thati Langar on its western bank and Kotla Afghan on the eastern bank before merging into the Chenab near Trimmu Headworks after flowing for some 80km downstream.

The floodwater, after the unusual weather pattern and rains, has spread over an area of one to two kilometres along the riverbank, taking the residents by surprise as there was no warning issued by the district administration or the irrigation department.

Though there has been no loss of human life, cattle or the houses, the flooding of fodder crop has created a big problem for the affected villagers who have nothing to feed their cattle.

The affected villages include Kotla Afghan, Jhok Usman, Kiran, Laghari, Mazari, Chandia Nashaib, Bhagat Ram Jass, Kalera, Mal Jasrat,

Thathi Nusrat, Lang Janoobi, Sahjhowal, Kot Khan, Kabala, Sahjhar Kalasan on the eastern bank of the river and Butta, Baila Shehr, Kot Shakir, Sahjhar, Chohan, Machiwal, Dossa, Muday Sayyed, Kot Maldev and Kharal on its western bank. All these villages are situated within the distance of one and a half kilometers from riverbank.

SHOT DEAD: A man was shot dead by two unidentified assailants on Monday morning near Adhiwal Chowk in the area of Jhang City police station.

Muhammad Khalil, a resident of village Karriwala, had come to Jhang to appear in the court.

As he alighted from the van at Adhiwal Chowk, two unidentified persons, armed with pistols, opened fire on him. He received six shots on his body and died on the spot.

The body was shifted to DHQ Hospital for autopsy.

According to family sources, the deceased had an enmity in the village Karriwala and his father and brothers were reported to have murdered four people of the rivals who, in retaliation, killed his father and two brothers a year back.

No case has been registered till the filing of this report.

BOOKED: The Satellite Town police have registered a case against its sub-inspector for allegedly torturing a young man to death in village Maduki.

A police party, led by SI Aslam Khan, raided a house in the village on Sunday night to arrest a proclaimed offender, Aslam Zia. The police after entering Zia’s house reportedly misbehaved with the women of the family. At this, Mudassar, stated to be the cousin of Zia, reacted and the sub-inspector started thrashing him. Mudassar sustained serious injuries and he was taken to DHQ Hospital in where he expired.

The relatives of the deceased took his body to Jhang-Gojra Road and blocked it by burning tyres. They ended their protest after the City DSP assured them of registration of a case against the sub-inspector.
