ISLAMABAD: PPP Senator Abdul Latif Ansari tendered his resignation on Friday to pave the way for the party’s Vice President Sherry Rehman to become member of the upper house of parliament.

According to PPP Spokesman Senator Farhatullah Babar, Mr Ansari has resigned so that Ms Rehman could replace him.

A PPP source said that Ms Rehman had served as Pakistan’s ambassador in the US and quit the office on May 15, 2013. According to rules, she was not eligible to become senator before a period of two years passed since she left the office.

The source said it was because of this reason that she kept away from the Senate elections held in March 2015.

“Now the restriction of two years to hold any public office is no longer there for Sherry Rehman and she will contest on the seat that has fallen vacant after resignation of Mr Ansari,” the source said.
