TOBA TEK SINGH: A police constable and a robber were killed in an ‘encounter’ near Gojra late Saturday night.

Police said four robbers took shelter under bushes near Chak 347-JB when they saw two constables coming towards them. They opened fire on the policemen as a result of which Muhammad Naeem was injured.

Naeem’s colleague sent for police teams from nearby police stations and Gojra DSP Atif Imran Qureshi also reached the spot. The policemen followed the robbers and shot at them as a result of which one of them was killed. His accomplices fled the scene.

The injured policeman from Nawan Lahore police station was shifted to Faisalabad’s Allied Hospital, where he succumbed to the bullet wounds. The deceased robber was identified as Ali Raza of Chak 91-JB, Pacca Anna.

The funeral prayers for the policeman were offered at the District Police Lines which was attended by DCO Waqas Alam, DPO Rana Shahzad Akbar and MNA Junaid Anwaar Chaudhry.

His (in absentia) funeral prayers were offered in Gojra, where MNA Khalid Warraich, MPA Qadeer Awan, ex-MNA Amjad Warraich and ex-tehsil nazim Asad Zaman Cheema were among the participants.

The Gojra Bar Association will mourn the policeman’s death by not appearing in courts on Monday (today).

THEFT: Thieves on Sunday took away cash and gold ornaments worth more than Rs600,000 from the house of Pakistan Navy’s Capt Abdul Mateen at the Government Revenue Officers Colony No 2.

Capt Mateen told the city police that he, along with his family, had gone to attend a wedding function and thieves broke the main gate’s lock and made off with cash and other valuables.

AMBULANCES: PML-N’s Kamalia MPA Begum Nazia Raheel Gujjar has claimed that the Punjab government has approved two ambulances for the THQ hospital on her request.

She told newsmen on Sunday that the ambulances would be provided to the hospital in September.
