BAHAWALPUR: Under the new local government set-up the city may get corporation status while there could be a district council and five municipal committees in the district.

According to sources in regional election commission, the proposed Bahawalpur corporation will comprise 21 urban union councils (UCs) and a district council, besides 88 rural UCs, for which preparation of drafts of the delimitation of constituencies was under way.

Under the new arrangement, Ahmedpur East, Hasilpur, Khairpur Tamewali, Yazman and Uch Sharif will get the status of municipal committees (MCs).

Regional Election Commissioner Mansoor Ahmed says according to the ECP’s schedule, the preliminary work on the drafts of the proposed delimitation of wards/constituencies would be completed by May 31.

Under the ECP’s schedule, the proposed delimitation drafts would be on display for the public from June 1 to 7 outside the offices of regional election commissioner and six assistant commissioners of Bahawalpur city, Saddar, Ahmedpur East, Hasilpur, Khairpur Tamewali, Yazman and sub-tehsil office of Uch Sharif, in the district.

Any objections to delimitation drafts would be invited from June 8 to June 22, while the filed objections, if any, could be disposed off by the regional election commissioner from June 23 to July 7.

Dawn has learnt that under the proposed delimitation drafts, Bahawalpur Saddar tehsil will have 17 rural UCs, Ahmedpur East city municipal committee 45 wards, Ahmedpur East tehsil 31 rural UCs, Hasilpur MC 38 wards and tehsil 13 rural Ucs. Similarly, Yazman MC will have 16 wards and 19 rural UCs and Uch Sharif MC of trehsil Ahmedpur East will consist of 13 wards.

Each UC will have a strength of 13 elected representatives, including a chairman, vice-chairman, six general councillors in each ward, two women councillors, besides one youth, one minority and one labourer (worker) member. The rural UCs will have one peasant member each instead of labourer member.

Derawar Fort: The Bahawalpur High Court Bar Association, through a resolution on Wednesday, demanded national heritage status for the crumbling Derawar Fort, besides steps for its restoration.

The resolution was moved by bar president Khair Muhammad Bhadera at its general body meeting presided over by Sahibzada Usman Daud Abbasi, a former deputy speaker of the Punjab Assembly, in connection with Nawab Sadiq-V’s death anniversary at the association’s hall, which was also named after the late nawab.
