Nawaz urges Ban Ki-moon to resolve Kashmir issue

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday urged UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to play a proactive role in promoting peace in the region, adding that it was incumbent on the UN Security Council to ensure early implementation of its commitment as reflected in the resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir.
Nawaz met the UN secretary general in Tajikistan on the sidelines of the International Conference on the Implementation of the International Decade for Action "Water for Life," 2005-15.
Talking about Indo-Pak ties, Nawaz said there appeared to be no acknowledgement of the initiatives he had taken to promote a dialogue process between the two countries. In fact, recent statements by the Indian leadership had been deeply disappointing, he said.
The prime minister told Ban Ki-moon that Pakistan had a strong and steadfast relationship with the UN and appreciated his leadership in advancing key objectives of peace and development.
He said support for peacekeeping missions was a strong element of Pakistan's foreign policy. Pakistan has been among the top contributors to UN's peacekeeping operations and would continue to respond to such calls, the premier said.
Talking about Pakistan's counter-terrorism measures, the prime minister said the country had formulated a 20-point National Action Plan and had adopted a policy of unflinching dedication towards countering this menace.
The prime minister reiterated to the UN secretary general Pakistan's overriding foreign policy priority of a peaceful neighborhood, which he said was vital for the wellbeing and prosperity of the entire region. To this end, he said he had reached out to all of Pakistan's neighbors, including India and Afghanistan.
Nawaz recalled his high-level meetings with the Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and said that their close cooperation had contributed to trust and confidence between the two states.
The two countries were also closely cooperating on special measures to strengthen bilateral ties in various spheres including economy, trade and counter terrorism, Nawaz added.
Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Special Assistant to Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi was also present in the meeting.

Moon cannot resolve this issue, only kashmiris can do it , if they are all united that is , Iron friend can also assist on this, UN and OIC are not effective.

So if the UN Security council ruled that Kashmir in it's entirety belonged to India ... would that bring peace/security to the region? 3rd parties can propose alternative solutions but in the long run the disputing parties are the ones that have to resolve their issues.

Yes, Kashmir issue should be addressed and resolved in a just manner. However, Ban Ki-moon should urge Nawaz Sharif to provide justice first to his own people. Start with Ahmadis, Christians, Shia Hazaras, Hindus, ect.....

UN should push india to retrieve its forces from Kashmir. United Nation Allied forces should be deployed and hold independent referendum in Kashmir. Then UN should hand over kashmir to the winning country.

Flogging a dead horse won't bring it back to life. Implimentation of the UN resolutions is impossible now due to a variety of reasons. The only realistic & responsible thing to do for both parties is to make the current LoC, a permanent border & work to make relations good so that borders can become irrelevant. This is what Mr. Musharraf had also proposed in 2007.

Recent events show that it may turn out to the turning point in the future and destiny of Pakistan especially present prime minister has shown his experience and skills to bring from Chinese 56 billion dollar investment , aid and other expertise to build new Pakistan. This is an extraordinary achievement. Now that the Chinese Superpower on the side of Pakistan, Kashmir issue might get soon resolved. However, the hubris and new ly won confidence should not it jump into confrontational adventure to tackle India. For, India might turn out to be a no-pushover.
If all goes well, the Prime minister Nawaz Sharif might turn Pakistan into a new Asian economic tiger if not a formidable South Asian power.

Can UN do anything about resolving Kashmir issue? Answer is not much. UN resolutions on Kashmir were under Charter VI of UN and therefore not enforceable and non-binding.
Pakistan should demand a new set of UN resolution under Charter VII of UN which is binding in nature and thus India can be forced to resolve it.
In the meantime any reference to Kashmir resolution of which Pakistani leadership is so fond of, is just time pass as nothing would happen under the existing conditions per charter VI rules.

@Black Sabbath : I'm Pakistani & I agree with your comments. It is unrealistic to expect the implementation of the 1948 UN resolution on Kashmir in the present day. Kashmiri borders should be made irrelevant between the two countries with cooperation from both sides.

Sir, Can't we forget kashmir issue for atleast 15-20 yrs and concentrate solely on development of both the respective nation? Both countries have lots of serious issues which is much more important than kashmir.
Bringing kashmir issue either by pakistani or indian politicians is nothing but diverting public attention from main development issue.
Once both nation gets developed, I am sure it will surely help resolving kashmir issue as well.
