Violent protests erupt in parts of KP over prolonged loadshedding

PESHAWAR: Violent protests erupted in several parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday over prolonged loadshedding conducted despite claims made by the federal government that no power cuts would take place during critical timings in the Holy month of Ramazan.
Power outages during Sehr timings were also reported from other cities across the country including Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Bahawalpur, Gujranwala, Kasur, Sheikhupira, Sahiwal and Okara.
Up to 20-hours long power cuts were reported in Peshawar, Charsasda, Mardan, Swabi, Kohat, Dera Ismail Khan, Karak and Dir districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa prompting violent protesters to take to the streets.
A grid station was torched by a mob in Charsadda district while district administration offices were set alight in Swabi. Clashes between police and protesters were also reported in several areas.
Earlier Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, during meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Energy, had directed authorities to ensure hassle-free power supply during ‘Sehr’ and ‘Iftar’ in the Holy month of Ramazan.
Federal Minister of Water and Power Khawaja Muhammad Asif had also assured the nation of uninterrupted power supply during critical times throughout the Ramadan.

One of the protesters Mouhammad Hamad Ijaz said that people were deprived of electricity even during Sehr timings. He claimed that bearing power cuts in the month of Ramazan was a difficult task.
Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) spokesperson Shaukat Ullah said that 20 hours loadshedding was not unannounced. Shaukat Ullah further said that it had been announced that loadshedding will continue in those areas where line loses are on peak and recovery is low.
Minister of State for Water and Power Chaudhry Abid Sher Ali had also warned last week that loadshedding of up to 20 hours was being carried out in areas where over 90 per cent line losses were recorded.
On the other hand, Abid Sher Ali said, only six-hour loadshedding was carried out in areas where people paid their bills regularly. He said power sector could not be run unless consumers cleared their bills.

According to Khawaja Asif, power generation on Wednesday had crossed the 16,000MW mark and the demand-supply gap now stands at about 3,600MW.
PM takes notice of power cuts, seeks report
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has taken notice of loadshedding during Sehri timings on the first day of Ramazan. He sought a detailed report over the issue from the ministry of water and power .
Furthermore, ministry of water and power on Friday appealed to the power consumers to observe electricity conservation during critical timings.
According to a press release issued on Friday, the ministry is exploring all avenues for optimal load management to keep the ‘Iftar’, ‘Taraweeh’ and ‘Sehri’ timing loadshedding free.
The ministry has also chalked out a plan to minimise the overall impact by distributing the load across the country.

There is something known as a project of national importance and priority. These projects are supposed to continue unhindered irrespective of which political party is in government. Power generation projects are one of such areas. As long as the GoP and the political parties will not understand the importance of such development projects and their unimpeded completion, the masses will continue to suffer.
PMLN has started several such development projects. Let them complete as they will bring some relief to common man.

So if 90% people not paying and 10% are paying their bills, then why are the 10% being punished and what is the motivation for more people to pay? The only fair solution is to disconnect the defaulters and provide electricity to the others. If the government cannot take this difficult step then it shouldn't be allowed to take the easy step of depriving everyone including the honest, bill-paying people of a basic necessity.

Why 5 to 6 hours loadsheding in Lahore and 20 hours in Malakand? I have been frequently moving between these two places and this is what is happening on ground. Probably this is the situation across the rural areas of Punjab also. This is extremely unfair. Why this urban and rural area divide. Are those living in rural areas are 3rd rate citizens?

@CYRUS In my town of around 50,000 people in South Punjab, less than 5% households have air con, yet ALL of us face 20 hours load shedding regularly. Not isolated, Vegas-style overloaded grid tripping occasionally in hot summers but every day of the summer. And, yes, summers here are much hotter than Las Vegas. And, yes, all of us pay our bills on time.

As tough as it sounds, Govt. must hold its ground. No bill payments = no power. If you have issues with the rates of electricity, then there are other avenues to channel your grievances rather than using it as an excuse to stop making payments. We have to understand it is all of us who have to pull off this system together. But I also think that Govt needs to present a workable solution to the problem. For lines losses to be reduced in these areas, there has to be a concerted effort. Ideally, newly elected municipal Govt. should be tasked with the project of reducing line losses

Private enterprise was mismanaging these companies. Contracts went to the wrong people. When vital industries fail the government has to step into a role it should not be playing.

if it is true that load shedding is done in areas where line losses are peak ( 90% to some estimates) it is fair. If you dont pay your bills, no matter where you are you have to face the dire consequences.
As for punishing the rest of the 10% , unless people who are forwarding this allegation can provide a workable method to separate those 10% from rest of the 90% and direct the transmission electricity ONLY to those 10% , they are just making noise and trying to politicize this technical issue. It is unfortunate that those 10% had to pay for the acts of 90% but it is unavoidable.

I am from Multan and also asked my relatives from Lahore and other places. We have only 1-2 hrs load shedding and that too during midnight when temperature is bearable. I am surprised the problem is acute elsewhere., these people are protesting without any reason.

@Rahat Though now a days there is no load sheding but 10,12 years back we were also facing the same discrimination i.e. load sheding in villages for 4 to 6 hrs and only 2 hrs in the villages, but the villagers protested this discrimination and even approached the consumer courts which resulted in equal treatment between cities and villages, as power for agriculture is free and supplied for 8 hrs a day hence separate distribution lines have been aid for villages which are not 3 phase but 2 phase. The villagers should unite and protest against this unfare treatment to the villagers.

For your knowledge the over due bill of the electricity is more in punjab than else other provinces and also sindh ahead than kpk and as the general perception is made as the FATA does not pay the bill which is adjusted in their Development bill and that is the Federal Govt who provide them for free, never ever have the Mere and the people all consider for them as the people of the kpk as for FATA which is control by Federal Govt which only emphasis on Metro for sale out their steal.

We pay the bills, in fact we pay more than the electricity we consume.
Those who donot pay their electricity should be cut off..this is the govt inability and corruption. I hope the people like you have some sense. one unit means 1KW electricity used for one hour...The meters they installed is some times charging you double or even more. And this was admitted by the Wapda people and there was Dawn article about this last year. Govt also admitted this. in my home we did not switch on a refrigerator since 2002 because the voltage is normally 15-20v in summer. This is the time Pakistani people should realize that govt are not telling them the truth and they would never solve their problem..We should request Pakistan Army to take over the power generation and distribution sector........apologies in advance.

Pay electricity bills and have power.For the poorest for bulbs and fans special rates upto 300 kw,above that normal rates.Where you use electricity for luxury,like Ac,motors,appliances and business normal rates.As a nation we need everything free.No bill payment no electricity. I pay may bills regularly but we are having unannounced load shedding in rural Hyderabad up to 18 hours. If other people around me steal electricity, why should I be penalized!!! I pay my bills! SHOULD I MIGRATE!!! Incompetent government is unable to control corrupt WAPDA officials who help people steal electricity and penalizes those who pay bills honestly!!! Bizarre!!! The "collective punishment" to ALL, including individuals who pay bills regularly, is cruel and reminds me of Israeli policy in Gaza.

I live in the I-8 sector of Islamabad and one day before start of Ramadan, not only the load-shedding continues but during non-load-shedding hours, the WAPDA electricity supply has dropped to 190V instead of normal supply of 220V so as a result the refrigerators and freezers do not work. All the food is being spoiled and wasted - who is going to pay for it? Obviously not WAPDA and not the government - it is damaging the already stretched people economically and hitting them in the pocket book. The government and WAPDA is a shameless bunch of idiots.

The real issue is that PESCO and the federal government only recently started fixing the power lines and dividing grids to ensure seamless supply of power. KP has improved greatly, power outages are down throughout. Even in my village where 99% of people pay their bills there has (MashAllah) been no power outages apart from the odd freak accident. The MNAs and MPAs of parties must get together and come up with a payment plan with PESCO. It's because of trouble makers who don't pay their bills and put up kundas on power lines that make the rest of us end up having to pay for them.

It seems people commenting here have got no clue what line losses are? they believe no one is paying their bills in KPK... pity their ignorance about other provinces .. If you do not pay bill for couple of months government will cut off your electric line as meters are located outside on the streets.
The biggest injustice with Pakistan is, that only one province is running it since its inception and only they call all the shots be it in uniform or without .. they have most literacy rate but irony is their policies have always been myopic and sugar coated with greed, where instead of increasing electricity, education, healthcare infrastructures and overpopulation control they are busy milking the country by building roads just to create a greater empire of Ittefaq group.

Based on your logic, Pak o Hind both should have stayed under British empire, don't you think? After all, they were building infrastructure and providing basic necessities. Why we even struggled for freedom? Correct?
