SWABI: Re-election would be held in Swabi district at 15 polling stations for women and two for men in nine union councils on July 5, sources in the district office of the Election Commission of Pakistan said on Friday.

They said that according to information collected by the officials the women were either prevented or they failed to participate in the election due to different reasons.

“No one is allowed to prevent women from exercising their right to vote and that’s why re-election is being held in some polling stations.

The election commission wants complete participation of women in the voting process,” an official told this correspondent.

There would be re-polling in three women polling stations each in union councils Naranji and Yaqubi, two each in Sodher and Tandkohi union councils and one each polling station in Saleem Khan, Shiekh Jana, Bachai, Gabasni and Dobian union council, said the sources.

The two polling stations for men where the election will be held again are in Dobian union council.

Meanwhile, Asad Zaman Sher, son of late Sher Zaman Sher, who had won tehsil councillor seat from Jalsai union council joined the Awami National Party here on Friday. He made the announcement during a meeting with ANP district president Ameer Rehman and general secretary Mohammad Aslam.

Mr Ameer said that Mr Asad’s decision would strengthen the party in Chota Lahor tehsil council.

MORE ARRESTED: The district police have started arresting more power protesters who had set on fire Chota Lahor tehsil sub-division office of Pesco during a protest against power outages a few days ago, sources said.

They said that the number of arrested people had reached 15 and many more were expected to be nabbed. Police sources said that the FIR registered against the protesters was still open and the police could put the name of any person in it.

KILLED: A man allegedly killed his brother-in-law in Maneri Payyan village here on Friday, police said.

They said that Mohammad Israr of Kuladand region had married two women, but his first wife had left home soon after his second marriage. Later, she demanded divorce, but her husband refused to do so.

They said that brothers of the women were also in favour of divorce, but Israr showed reluctance, which infuriated his in-laws.

Registering an FIR in Swabi city police station, second wife of the deceased Israr said that Zahid Khan, brother of his first wife, along with his colleagues scaled the boundary wall of their house and opened fire on her husband, killing him on the spot.

Police have registered an FIR against Mr Zahid and his accomplices.
