Reham Khan dismisses Daily Mail over degree report

Broadcast journalist and wife of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Wednesday dismissed British daily, Daily Mail, for calling into question a journalism course she is said to have registered for.
Reham categorically denied the baseless allegations on her academic qualifications by the UK based newspaper terming it a story not based on facts and lacking reporting legal work.
Social media was abuzz Wednesday morning when Daily Mail published a report which claimed that the 'Broadcast Journalism' course that Reham has made known as part of her education does not exist.
The report quoted from Reham's personal website, which maintains that she clinched her post as BBC reporter after starting a postgraduate course in Broadcast Journalism from North Lindsey college in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire.
However, officials at the institute have told Daily Mail it does not offer such a course nor has Reham's name in its records.
"We do not have anyone by those names or date of birth having attended this college," says a spokesman. "We have never done a degree in broadcast journalism."
Reham Khan took to Twitter to say that she never "never picked up the Daily Mail", implying its lack of credibility.

She also labelled the report "senseless propaganda" and said that a "select lobby will attack you" if one chooses to address certain issues in Pakistan through their work.

Reham also tweeted an image of the passage from her website which mentions her education and credentials, which mentions that she had "started" a postgraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism, but does not specify that she completed it.
Tweeting the hashtag "Educate Pakistan", Reham said she would be "happy to help" those who are having trouble with reading.

In a media statement issued later in the day, Reham asserted she has never claimed to have a degree in broadcast journalism, as she has completed diploma in ‘broadcast media’ that she obtained from the Grimsby Institute Media Centre.

Earlier today, PTI spokesperson Naeemul Haq while speaking to news channels, said that this issue is Reham Khan's "personal matter" and can only be clarified by her.
He also said that on her website, Reham did not say anything related to the degree itself, nor did the Daily Mail say that Reham obtained her degree.

Following a social media uproar after the Daily Mail report, the education credentials on Reham's personal website were changed. The name of the institution where the journalist started her postgraduate was changed to Grimsby Institute, North East Lincolnshire.

In a series of new tweets, Reham referred to the revision as "additional" information. She also announced that an official statement will be out soon, which will have details regarding the course code and campus.

Reham went on to mention that she is a working parent without a PR company or a spokesperson at her disposal.

Reham Khan is a British Pakistani journalist who started her career in the BBC as a weather forecaster. Later she worked for the network as a broadcast journalist. She joined Pakistani news channel News One in 2013 and is currently working as an anchor at DawnNews.

Even if she had "started" the degree course, she couldn't have done so since the noted university does not even offer a degree in broadcast journalism. No, this is not a 'personal' matter of Reham Khan. This is a serious lie since she plans to run for a parliament seat soon, as was suggested in her recent tweets. If she does, then she should come clean on this matter and also provide proof that she is actually a university graduate, which is a requirement for running for a parliament seat in Pakistan.

There is no doubt that Pakistani Media (of which Reham is a part) always has an agenda. So, lets put that debate behind us.
If degree is fake - just admit it, apologize, and move on. If not, please set the record straight. It is easy to do so. Please also file a suit against Daily Mail... You have the resources to do so. You are a journalist/anchor - its not like you have a medical fake degree and perform surgeries on patients.
Pakistanis have a serious problem with accepting wrongdoing and apologizing. We are a sad people. The level of dishonestly is mind-boggling.

Why does not she admit she put fake information to impress ignorant public? Instead, like other leaders linked to PTI she blames media, daily Mail and Pak TV channels. Did she not work in these channels? Was she not happy when given coverage by these channels as a first lady in waiting? She says personal matters are being dug as she spoke of real problems the country faces. this is just playing with words and hidings behind rhetoric.

What is the issue here. That RK needs to have this degree to be a broadcast journalist. She is one of the most articulate and charismatic TV personalities in Pakistan today - degree or no degree. Let her employers decide. As for all the remaining anchors on Pakistani channels, let's see your journalistic credentials. Do diplomas from medical schools count?

It was reported by Dawn in June that the PTI is considering Reham Khan to contest in the Haripur re-election ordered by the Supreme Court in the NA-19 constituency. If her degree is fake, then she should be disqualified to contest. I had voted for the PTI, believing in Imran's mantra of clean, fair, and uncorrupt politics. I expect the same fairness to be applied to his wife's case.

Fake degree is extremely important issue, specially for a family who doesn't hesitate to criticise others and recommends others to go to court to rebut any wrong claim by any media in UK.

The debate is more about whether she has been "economical with the truth" about her education, irrespective of how immaterial it might be.

The earlier version on her website stated the institute to be "North Lindsey college in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire". This has now been changed to "Grimsby Institute, North East Lincolnshire" in the revised statement. This seems like an acceptance that the prospective first lady had lied to the public, and then unfortunately ridiculed the same public for not understanding English. Perhaps, we should wait for another Daily Mail report to show that she never got a "postgraduate" (degree or diploma?) from the Grimsby Institute, North East Lincolnshire.

Hate to say it, but on the face of this "evidence" the Daily Mail story is actually correct - and you couldn't sue them for anything.
Just goes to prove that before posting anything online, it is always best to double-check everything.
I am still intrigued. Why would you put a wrong name on your website. It is not as if it would gain you additional prestige like listing Oxford University would have done. Very bizarre to say the least.

One doesn't have to be highly degree qualified to be recognized or be good at their work. But we are obsessed in boasting and projecting ourselves quantitatively in holding phantom higher qualifications and academic gold medals. I know of some TV aalim and a former law minister who in spite of being proved fake are still adamant and get a kick at being addressed "Doctor".
For a lady of some grace, it wasn't therefore necessary at all to be "degree" obsessed.

One of the foremost quality of a leader is honesty and trustworthiness; she failed to refute claim of the newspaper. Also, she is trying to play the role of a leader therefore her life is subject to public scrutiny. Plus, for Imran "a man is known by the company he keeps". This particular 'Newspaper', has also been a respondent in a number of well publicised libel cases and has paid out substantial damages to its victims. For that reason, I would urge you all to take everything, not just the allegations against Mrs Khan, at face value at best.

RK says she dosent watch Pakistani TV Channels, yet before joining 'DAWN' and after leaving 'AAJ TV' in between she was appearing in all the other channels as guest, giving comments, so what a lie here to be said by her.

@Tanweer Khan I agree. Why would you put the name of a college you never attended when you could have put the name of an institute you did go to and get a qualification as she is now stating.
Also, the arrogant attitude towards the "unwashed masses" who do not know English and the Pakistani media who are despicable yet she is working for one of them is quite irritating.

@Salman I sincerely hope that she reflects on this and uses the last few days of Ramadhan to redeem herself.
What we now need is a sincere and honest apology from her - as she has literally slapped on our collective faces for wanting the truth.
Talk about the "pot calling the kettle black". The sheer audacity of her initial reaction when the story broke has completely eroded her credibility in my view.

Reham Khan first you were caught for fraudulent representation of academic credentials on your website. Then you are criticizing the media for exposing you. In addition you are using KPK government's helicopter and protocol for personal use the entire country saw that on dawn news.

@Tariq Mahmood I was born in the UK and am 44 years old now. Whilst your points on Daily Mail are perfectly valid - it does not mean that this story is false.
The fact that RK quickly amended her website to change the college name is sufficient proof that the Daily Mail's claim about her never attending the college is 100% correct.
That is a fact even you sir will have to accept - despite what spin anyone puts on it.

She even lied that her husband abused her - a fact that was contested by her husband.
