ISLAMABAD: On the advice of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, President Mamnoon Hussain granted on Wednesday special remission to convicts of various categories on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.

According to a statement, a remission of three months has been granted to prisoners serving life-term except those convicted of heinous crimes such as murder, espionage and anti-state activities, sectarianism, rape, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping and terrorist acts.

A 45-day remission has been granted to all other convicts, except the condemned prisoners and those convicted of murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state activities, terrorist acts, rape, kidnapping/abduction, robbery, dacoity and those undergoing sentences under the Foreigners Act 1946.

Special remissions will be admissible for the convicts who have served two-thirds of their sentence.

Total remission has been granted to male prisoners 65 years of age or above and women who are 60 years old or above and have undergone at least one-third of their sentence of imprisonment, except those involved in culpable homicide and terrorist acts.

Special remission of a year has been allowed to women prisoners who have accompanying children and are serving sentence for crimes other than culpable homicide and terrorism.

Total remission has also been allowed to juvenile convicts, except those convicted of heinous crimes, who have served one-third of their sentence.
