Altaf to start hunger strike in protest

KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement's (MQM) Rabita Committee late on Sunday night appealed to Altaf Hussain asking him to take back his decision regarding the hunger strike.
Earlier, Altaf Hussain on Sunday released a statement in which he announced his decision to go on a hunger strike unto death in protest.
The MQM chief has decided to go on a hunger strike against what he calls 'illegal' detention of his party activists by security forces.
According to the statement given, preparations are being made for the hunger strike, and it will commence once permission is received from the local administration in London.
“I have promised the people that I will die rather than bow my head in front of tyrants,” said Hussain on Sunday.

“Federal and provincial government, the army, rangers and other security agencies of the state are busy in targeting innocent people, due to which I have taken a decision to go on a hunger strike,” added Hussain.
Hussain further stated that he does not have any other option left except of going on a hunger strike in order to lodge protest at what he sees as victimisation of his political party.
“After my death, all party affairs will be handled by Rabita Committee, and it will be their decision whether or not to continue my political movement,” Hussain stated.

Earlier on Friday, a contingent of Rangers paramilitary force raided Nine Zero, the headquarters of MQM, in Karachi's Azizabad neighbourhood and detained two members of MQM's Rabita Committee. This is the second raid by Rangers on Nine Zero this year.
According to an earlier press release issued by Sindh Rangers, Qamar Mansoor and Kaiful Warah were arrested from Azizabad on the charges of "arranging and facilitating hate speeches against the peace of Karachi".
Rangers later announced the release of MQM Rabita Committee’s member Kaiful Warah on Friday evening on sureties till Eidul Fitr.
First Information Reports (FIR) were also registered against Altaf Hussain at police stations in various regions of Sindh on the night between Monday and Tuesday for what the government has regarded as his "inflammatory remarks" against the military.

During his speech earlier on Sunday, Hussain called upon the army chief to take notice of the alleged violation of the army’s code of conduct by director general of Sindh Rangers and other officials and urged him to do justice in the matter.The MQM chief had also accused Sindh Rangers of torturing and murdering party workers.

Who does he need permission from?
As a UK born and bred Pakistani, I can categorically confirm there are no laws stopping anyone from going on hunger strike in the UK.
That is a fact - which is not open for debate.
The ONLY caveat to this is that if an individual is admitted to hospital due to the hunger strike, then the doctors can apply for a court order to force feed the individual - as under UK law, the doctors are under a legal (and ethical duty) to save a life.
However, if you are not admitted to hospital, then NOBODY can legally stop you from going on any hunger strike.
So I ask the question again "who does he need permission from"?

Why? Secondly movement you started was a justifiable movement for us Urdu speaking peoples. However the means used & words uttered did tarnish the image of Proud Mohajir families. Lots of work needs to be done to undo, and it will be done as there are some very good Urdu Speaking leaders out there. Thanks for your pioneering steps however your strategies are outdated.

Call for a referendum and a majority in Karachi would support the ongoing operation. The fact of the matter is that Karachi's living conditions have improved over the last year, there are less instances of violence and criminal activity, and the people of Karachi know that. Therefore, MQM is becoming increasingly irrelevant, which is why Mr. Altaf is resorting to such extreme measures to keep that ethnicity card close to his chest.

These old tactics don't work. Going on a suicide mission, just because you can not face the law is weak and low. If you think you are a leader of a mainstream political party, than show some class and face the truth. You seeing yourself in a closed end tunnel and there is no way back. In your mind the only way to save your fame is to close the chapter, without much explore to the public, but 99% of Pakistanis know you well. The remaining 1% either still afraid to see what happen in Karachi in late 80's, or they might having some financial benefits and protecting themselves just being associated with you. Apart from anything that can be said about his previous speeches and remarks on different issues, the situation is serious. The election of NA 346 has clearly proved his popularity among the mohajir masses. if his condition worsens because of hunger strike the matter might become irreparable. He is the undisputed leader of 80% mohajirs of urban areas of Sindh and any loss caused to his life in the course of this scenario could affect the psychology of mohajirs in general that would have lasting effects. The establishment and the Government should try to avoid the situation by taken ameliorative actions since the apparent picture of the Rangers Operation is giving a biased impression of the NAP in Karachi. While having all kind of proofs against PPP people are still at large with MQM leaders and activists are being chased and arrested for only listening to a speech or carrying coupons of Fitra and Zakat.

I'm a Karachi wala and am Mqm supporter... What's happening against us isn't fair and very targeted. Operation upon operation against a political party because certain ethnicities in Pakistan hate us. Everyone has violent sections in their party and everyone collects 'bhatta' in different forms. That being said, 'bhai' needs to go or at least lose some weight. His mental health is deteriorating and the government and everyone outside Karachi is consistently proving why Urdu speaking karachiites need to support mqm

His hunger strike will need to be ratified by rabita comittee who will allow this hunger strike after his prior medical check up that will show that since he has host of medical syndromes therefore he should not risk his life with hunger strike. So few hundred workers will gather at 90 to beg him not to go on hunger strike and he will agree.

Next time he should announce that he is on a hunger strike rather than he is contemplating one. As sick as he has claimed to be; evidenced by his need to go to the hospital every time he is summoned by the Met police, it would not be a prudent idea, on the flip side, I'm sure it has been suggested to him on many an occasion to go on a strict diet to shed 20 % of his body weight. He will recant like the many previous occasions at the insistence, admonitions, requests, and pressures of his handful of supporters or the advice of his physicians. If it does happen, he has accumulated more than his fair share of adipose tissue, some of which has found its way to his brain; hence the impromptu, irresponsible whimsical, and quixotic, statement for which his minions have to apologize for, on his behalf! In this case it will be months before the hunger strike reaches its desired result. Saving grace, we might see his neck and parts that has not seen the light of day for over a decade!
