ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Friday held a meeting with the party's election tribunal head Justice (r) Wajihuddin Ahmad and senior party member Hamid Khan to resolve the simmering differences within the party.

During the meeting that lasted over two hours, it was decided that another meeting will be held on August 2 with PTI's national leaders, in which Justice (r) Wajihuddin and Hamid Khan will also take part.

Justice (r) Wajihuddin maintained that Jahangir Tareen, Aleem Khan, Pervez Khattak and Nadir Leghari's party membership had been suspended, based on the tribunal's decision pertaining to the previous intra-party elections held in 2013.

The retired justice expressed his reservations, especially with regards to the non-implementation of his tribunal's decisions during the meeting. It was decided that this issue will be resolved in the next meeting.

During today's meeting, Hamid Khan said party leaders, including himself, were not consulted when the terms of reference for the agreement with the PML-N government to form the Judicial Commission were decided on.

While speaking to media representatives, Justice Wajihuddin said intra-party elections will be held on a regular basis. He added that Imran Khan agreed that direct elections should take place for the various positions in the party.

He also said that the PTI needed to be internally strengthened, adding that he stands with Imran Khan and not the currently established party. He emphasised that PTI's ideological workers should be given more importance.

He further said that there are certain powers that are trying to damage PTI internally.

Justice (r) Wajihuddin was tasked to head a commission in 2013 to investigate "irregularities" in PTI's intra-party elections that took place before the general election in the same year.

The tribunal had passed several orders on various petitions and termed the intra-party polls, which were completed on March 18, 2013, seriously flawed and had thus reduced terms of office of those elected from four years to two years.

The two-member election tribunal then summoned party chairman Imran Khan to appear before it on April 21 to explain why he had not complied with its earlier orders.

The summons came as a surprise for many in the PTI as Mr Khan had already dissolved the tribunal in March after it issued a detailed judgment on March 18, recommending fresh intra-party polls due to serious irregularities in the intra-party election process and called for the dissolution of all party offices at the organisational level.

Following the summon, the PTI issued another notification for the dissolution of its intra-party election tribunal on April 25.

The notification signed by the PTI chief had said that the tribunal formed by the party in 2013 to investigate “irregularities” in the intra-party elections stands dissolved “with effect from March 22”.
