Lost piece of Titanic history finally resurfaces
AN original plaque presented to the ship’s builder after the ill-fated craft was completed has been revealed for the first time by a Granada Art Gallery owner who bought it unaware, simply to “decorate his room”, and is now on show to the public in Spain.
The art dealer Leo Lorenzo Sancho and his collector grandfather initially didn’t realise the importance of the object they had purchased from a British man 12 years ago. The 1.8 kilogramme object is inscribed with the ship’s name and the words ‘Queen of the Ocean’, along with the date of the ship’s final voyage: April 10, 1912. There is also a light inside that displays the image of the vessel, and it contains the original electrical wiring.
While it was given to Lord William James Pirrie, chairman of the shipbuilder that made Titanic, what happened to the plaque between 1912 and its rediscovery in 2003 by an art gallery owner remains a mystery.
Currently it is the main attraction at an exhibition at the Grenada Science Park called ‘Titanic, the Reconstruction’.
