LARKANA: The Larkana-Sehwan dyke developed a leak near Sher Khan Jatoi village on Friday evening but the personnel of irrigation department and administration plugged it before it could prove dangerous.

Talking to Dawn at the dyke, an irrigation official said the leak had one entry point and six exits but it had been plugged well in time.

Another official said that they were now erecting a ring dyke, called Manglee in local parlance, round the affected portion of the dyke as a precautionary measure. It would take three to four hours to complete work on strengthening the dyke, he added.

Larkana Commissioner Ghulam Akbar Leghari, Deputy Commissioner Javed Ahmed Jagirani and chief engineer of the right bank arrived at the dyke after they were informed about the leak and immediately called in heavy machinery to plug it.

According to some reports, the Balhreji-Karani portion of the dyke was also sensitive where stones were being dumped on the directives of secretary of irrigation to strengthen it.
