RAWALPINDI: A woman was killed on Friday in the first accident involving the metro bus.

Fehmida Begum, 60, a resident of Humak Town Sihala, and her son arrived at the Liaquat Bagh bus station at about 4:45pm for onward travel to Bari Imam shrine.

“As soon as her son entered the bus, the doors closed leaving the woman out. She tried to catch hold of the bus but slipped and fell on the track, and was run over,” one of the passengers who gave his name as Anwar Niazi told Dawn. The victim was shifted to Benazir Bhutto Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Ansar Mehmood, the brother of the deceased woman, told Dawn that his sister kept asking the driver to stop the bus as her son was inside, but the driver did not listen.

“The driver has killed my sister as the door was open when he drove the bus,” Ansar Mehmood said.

Qazi Azhar, station house officer of city police station, who is leading the investigation, claimed that the death was caused by accident, and there was no need to register a case against the driver.

The Rawalpindi administration had said that they were considering placing the metro bus service/track in the category of motorway as any fatal or non-fatal accident that takes place on the motorway is not reported to the local police due to ban on crossing the road. —Staff Reporter
