PESCO DRIVE: Peshawar Electric Supply Company will launch a drive in the district against tampering with power meters by checking the meters of domestic, commercial and industrial consumers.

SDO Wajidullah asked the customers to stop power theft otherwise strict action would be taken against them. He said that power theft was inflicting losses on Pesco that was resulting in loadshedding and tripping of the system.

“Now the system is being streamlined to replace local testing of pressure on internal and external wires of the meter,” said the official. He said that more laboratories would be established in the province for checking of meters because sending meter to Peshawar for checking required weeks and months.

The SDO said that the consumers, whose meters were tampered with for theft of electricity, would be fined according to the actual load and the percentage of tampering. In case of nonpayment, their supply line would be suspended, he added.

During the last two months, 11,833 meters were sent to laboratory for checking and 1,296 of them were found tampered with for power theft. A fine of Rs33 million was imposed on the consumers collectively.
