SWABI: There is a long delay in the start of classes at the newly-built Government Girls’ Degree College, Yar Hussain, due to the failure of the Peshawar Electric Supply Company to provide the educational institution with electricity.
Under the plan, the college, the first of its kind in the area, is to cater to the surrounding areas of Chota Lahor and Razaar tehsils.
The works and services department officials told Dawn on Friday that the school building was ready for use but the delaying tactics on part of Pesco was a hurdle to it.
They said though the department had made the due payments in advance months ago, the Pesco had yet to install electricity transformer and meters on the college premises.
“The Pesco officials have been making lame excuses,” sub-divisional officer at the works and services department Zahir Shah.
The SDO said the building was ready to be handed over to the education department for use.
He said it was not clear when the Pesco would supply electricity to the college.
When contacted, project contractor Roedad Khan said he could hand over the building to the department within a week for the start of classes but doing so was not possible unless it had electric supply.
Local residents said majority of local girls gave up education after passing matriculation as they had no college around.
Basar Ali said more and more girls from the area would enrol themselves with the college after its opening.
A Pesco official told Dawn that his organisation was doing the necessary work for power supply to the college.
Meanwhile, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan on Thursday visited Topi city to condole the death of senior politician and businessman Khanzada Mohammad Rafiq Khan.
Accompanied by the PML-N provincial and district leaders, the governor went to the house of the deceased, offered fateha for him and sympathised with family members.
