200 vehicles impounded in Gujranwala

GUJRANWALA, Oct 17: Over 200 public transport vehicles, including Transport Society of Gujranwala (TSG) wagons, were impounded by the district administration and police for transporting people to Islamabad for welcoming the Saudi crown prince.

Sources said police officials had stopped these vehicles on the GT Road, made the passengers get off and left them stranded along the road. The passengers, including elderly men, women and children, had to face a lot of problems in reaching their destination along with their luggage.

CONCERN: The Markazi Anjuman Tajran and other trade organizations have uttered their concern over a hike in prices of commodities ahead of Ramazan.

At a meeting held here on Friday presided over by Markazi Anjuman Tajran president Sheikh Zulfikar Ali, the participants said the price of ghee had been increased thrice in a month. They said the price of a 16kg ghee tin was raised from Rs820 to Rs1,000.

Similarly, the prices of sugar, pulses and other daily use items had also been increased, badly upsetting the budget of the people.

They demanded that the district administration should constitute special checking teams to control the prices of commodities during Ramazan.

REARRESTED: The Cantonment police claimed to have rearrested an outlaw who had escaped from the lock-up some two months ago and recovered looted goods and illicit arms from his possession on Friday.

Asif alias Natho had escaped along with his accomplices. Police also arrested his accomplices on his identification.

A case has been registered against the accused.

RESULTS: The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Gujranwala, will announce on Oct 20 the results of Intermediate supplementary examinations, 2003.
