Imran demands anti-corruption crackdown in Punjab

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan on Monday demanded “third-party, independent inquiries of mega corruption scams in Punjab” and invited all federal agencies, especially Rangers and NAB, to begin crackdowns against corruption in Punjab and “even in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa” where his own party rules.
“Agencies should come to Punjab, and even KP to clean what we have been unable to.
“But it is more important than ever to cleanse Punjab because the biggest scams will be found there,” said Imran.
Speaking at a press conference from his Bani Gala residence in Islamabad, Imran Khan said the Nandipur power plant failure would have gone unnoticed had the “muk-muka” between the PPP and the PML-N not broken down.
“It is at least a Rs22 billion project. We demand a third-party audit, not one on the lines of the Model Town investigation,” stated the PTI chief.

Imran Khan went on to say that these mega corruption scandals had not come to the forefront before because the “Public Accounts Committee and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was controlled by them (the PPP and the PML-N).”
“But today their cooperation has ended and they are at loggerheads over Rangers’ and federal agencies’ action in Sindh,” said Imran, referring to the tiff between the PPP and the PML-N which has resulted in the PPP leadership giving strong statements against the PML-N run government.
Khan said it was intriguing why the Nandipur project was a failure after so much work had been done, and held Punjab Chef Minister Shahbaz Sharif responsible for it.
The PTI chief went on to say that the metro bus projects by the PML-N government were also “extravagant.”
“We also demand an independent audit of the metro projects,” which he said was made at an unusually high cost.
“The biggest of all corruption cases is the LNG scandal. We know your friends in Qatar and how you are doing it.”
The PTI chairman said “not even revealing the cost of the project was questionable,” adding that the “Sindh government was right in pointing out it produced a major chunk of gas in the country.

Ziaullah Afridi sacked from PTI
Imran Khan said action against 5,000 policemen had been initiated in KP, which he said was unprecedented in Pakistan.
Lauding provincial police chief Nasir Durrani, Imran Khan criticised under-investigation former KP minister Ziaullah Afridi for his remarks on the KP Assembly floor a couple of days ago.
“He (Afridi) has been a solid worker for our party but what he did in the KP Assembly was very disappointing. Even the CJP had appreciated the IG.
“I am sacking Ziaullah Afridi from PTI. This is a message for my party… if you are under investigation you have to clear yourself first… not throw dirt and blackmail others.”

So he has finally admitted that PTI has been unable to clean up KPK.
Yet, he thinks PTI can clean up Pakistan.
That is a huge challenge IK - and I am glad you have acknowledged that you are not up to the task.
NAB has failed on this forever, so I am not sure how they'll just suddenly fix everything.
Also, I am not sure why Rangers need to be involved everywhere - after all their primary role is to guard the borders.
They should not be mobilised to do other people's work?
If you want military to clean up the country, then just ask General Raheel to take over !!!

About time. All corrupt officials and looters of public money needs to learn that they are paid salary to 'serve' the people, not to loot the people of Pakistan. Makes you think where these looters earn such a huge sum of money to own, big castle like houses, huge ackers of land, factories, sugar mills, real state all over Pakistan, in Dubai and London etc.? Why officials and their political patrons are not checked for illegal influence peddling, abuse of power and treating people like personal servants all over Pakistan.

They are running the country as business. Spending one billion rupees on election campaign and making multi-billion in four or five years period. How they do it very clear to all. My point is you cannot do what you did in the past and expect a different result this time round.
If you want corruption to stop, it will have to start by the public - who will grease people's palms when they go to an office etc in order to expedite their work - and the workers are demanding bribes blatantly.
Unless, the public at the bottom of the ladder takes action - you will not get rid of corruption. It is the guys at the bottom that are passing the loot upwards, not the guys at the top passing the loot downwards.
By the way, I was born and bred in the UK and live in London - and used to come to Pakistan every year, but haven't been there for last 5 years - because I got fed up of everyone asking for a bribe everywhere; at the airport, at the hotel, at the travel agency, at the bank, at the restaurant even at the Wagah ceremony.
Only way to kill the tree of corruption is to chop it off at the roots. Trimming some branches at the top makes hardly any difference.

If Sherif, Zardari, and other rich army generals(do not ignore them) bring their money back and create jobs for massed that will be great achievement. Even we could ask them to construct iconic buildings in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, and Quetta and providing them some kind of assurance that no one will confiscate those standings assets from them. Bottom line is that the corrupt people should contribute back in the country and create jobs for masses.

Decades of hidden corruption in Punjab must be thoroughly investigated by a third party and the culprits must be brought to justice. I am very surprised how come Punjab have escaped for so long and I am also surprised why there have not been any suo motu agaginst the Sharif brother actions while we remember during Iftikhar Chaudhry's time there were suo motu every other day against PPP and Musharraf government. I am not a PPP supporter but PMLN must also be investigated atleast on their mega projects. One must also know why LDA office in Lahore was burned right before the 2013 elections and right after the Lahore Metro was completed?

In my view, Sharifs' are businessmen and are rational economic agents; I am not one of their fans, but I somehow believe that they have stayed relatively clean since they took over the reigns. Last two years of evidence clearly points to their continued effort to build and not to loot this nation. I just focus on the evidence - with relative free and hounding media, it is difficult to hide institutional corruption for long.

@W. G. Sheikh Lets say if we consider that you are making a right statement. Then, let's wait for that day when the NAB starts probing into Punjab and its corrupt officials misdeed and their assets that have been accumulating locally, and internationally over last three to four decades.
If that ever happens we will see the real and true picture of those officials, politicians, land mafia, and their faces attached to the NAB reports and its recommendations for their trial in the Army Anti Terrorism Courts (A-ATCs).
This will happen only and only because they will be the ones who will be one of those who were and are the main sponsor's and are sponsoring terrorist groups etc...until to date for their personal gains and using it as diversions of national issues away from common man's common sense.

In Pak Railways, there are thousands of 'ghost' workers on the payroll.
The bogus workers are paid a stipend for the use of their Nadra cards etc - and so everyone is happy.
It is these people that are the root cause of corruption - you solve this and you will solve the bigger problem.
I was personally told by a family friend in the Railways that in his 'official' register of 30 workers - 8 of them were bogus.
Last time I spoke to him, he told me he was going to vote for Imran Khan (note: not PTI, but IK) - because IK can't be as bad for Pakistan as NS or AZ.
However, he himself was going to carry on claiming the salaries of the 8 ghost workers, on the basis that if/when the audit happens I'll ask the ghost workers to come in and pretend to be working.
And he is only in charge of a team of labourers repairing the tracks - imagine what the managers up the chain must be doing !!!!!
Can IK, NAB and Rangers really get these people to stop this illegal embezzlement?

@Tanweer Khan I am also from London and I would suggest just check the corruption in UK police and other government bodies in the seventies. The fight against corruption has to be started at the top and then it trickles down not the other way round like you suggested. It will take decades but will have to start at the top.

For critics, let me explain something to you. Please take a road trip from either Islamabad to KP or KP to Islamabad using old G.T road. You will know the difference between how corrupt Punjab police is compare to KP. KP police no longer extort money from poor truck drivers and passengers of local transport. I needed to come to Islamabad Airport to catch a flight and rented a vehicle. As we crossed into Punjab near Attock, it was stopped by the police and money was demanded in open from the driver because they knew I am going to the airport and am some how loaded with money.
On the way from Islamabad, my poor pathan driver had to pay 200 Rs. at about 5 different police check point in the middle of the night just because he was going to KP.
My police brothers in Punjab, you are selling your soul for only Rs. 200.

Given that Metro bus should have been a lower priority because we need money for fixing the sewerage and drinking water system in all cities of Punjab, education of our children etc., the PML-N Government specially the "architect" and sponsor of Metro Bus; Shahbaz Sharif should be questioned by NAB and FIA in terms of the cost incurred on the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro bus project which is estimated at US$19.0 million per kilometer - WHEREAS in India which is also a victim of corruption, the cost was only US$3.5 million.

Very genuine and timely demand indeed from Imran Khan. But at a time when PML-N is in power both at provincial as well as federal level the so-called "independent"NAB would never dare to act in Punjab and put feet in any mega case of corruption except announcing investigation just for the sake of public consumption only. The NAB is and has always been considered and also treated as slave of the rulers of the day.

@malick .... It is everyone's job in a democracy to feed and educate their children. If the government is not doing these things people have to do it. In a democracy the people are the government. God is not a baker of bread.

@asad LATEEF My impression was that the people who provide financial support to IK for his election and thurna are not having hidden agenda or objectives. But I could be wrong. Thanks for correcting me.

I have hundered issues with PTI and imran khan u turn policy, but what i like that he is ready to avoid corruption and did exactly same in KPK despite having some loopholes.

@Gaz And how come, IK demands anti-corruption drive in Punjab, but does not start in KPK ? He mentioned it for KPK in passing his judgement for Punjab, but he does not need anyones permission to start it in KPK. Charity begins at home.

It absolutely critical law agencies should come to Punjab and give us protection from looters of mother land. They appeared to common man most gracious however, their bank accounts filled with national treasury.

@AW do you know what happened in USA in 2010 when economy came to standstill. as various states became bank crept,if you remember number of mayors and state governors rush to white house for funds,needed to cultivate economic activities through construction of roads ,overhead bridges etc.the amount taken in billions for this purpose,and even china differed two half yearly installments on the cumulative borrowings which runs over 3 trillion dollars.this action in US survived its labor force + industries,including its retail businesses.today even japan has joined china in investing in trillion in govt bonds issued by US,for their own interest to have playing grounds for their goods.the present govt in Pakistan took the same steps and at least their is movement in economic activities.if the Musharraf govt who ruled over 8 years and thereafter 5 years of PPP,Dams were constructed and if there was no shortage of electricity as on today,think where would have been Pakistan today

@Confused your name says it all. You obviously did not read the article. He is saying that third party like rangers can go after corruption in Punjab like they have in Sindh and he has invited them to do the same in KP.
