ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s first integrated resource recovery centre was inaugurated in the federal capital on Thursday. The facility will enable the city to produce resources from the composting, recycling and bio-digestion of solid waste.
Located in G-15, the plant will receive three tons of municipal solid waste every day from its surrounding communities and markets to produce compost and bio-gas. The plan has the capacity to process up to 10 tons of solid waste per day.
A recent study by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) showed that the volume of solid waste generated within the city’s municipal limits ranges between 500 and 550 tons per day. The generated waste consists of various types of solid waste, including municipal, kitchen, garden, domestic and commercial waste.
Islamabad has been in dire need of a modern and scientific sanitary landfill site, with safeguards for the disposal of waste, as well as a compost fertilizer plant for the treatment of hazardous, toxic and hospital waste.
