ISLAMABAD: The Mari Petroleum Company Limited (MPCL) announced on Friday to have discovered reserves of crude oil, condensate and natural gas in its Karak Block’s Kalabagh Well in Mianwali.
In a statement issued here, the company said the hydrocarbon deposit was found in Kalabagh-1A ST1 Well. The Karak Joint Venture is operated by MPCL which holds 60 per cent working interest and the MOL of Hungary with 40 per cent share.

The discovery is the company’s second success in the block, after its first major crude oil discovery at Halini Well-1 in 2011.
Tests said to have produced good results
The Kalabagh-1A ST1, spud-in on March 20, 2015, is the company’s second exploratory well in the Karak Block, drilled down to a depth of 3,003 metres in Datta Formation.
During testing, the well flowed gas and condensate in Datta Formation at a rate of 3.3 million cubic feet of gas per day and 160 barrels of crude with wellhead pressure of 694 Psi at 32/64 choke size.
“The gas discovery has an excellent heating value of 1144 BTU/SCF and its Condensate API is 52 @600F,” the company said.
It also said the well had been successfully tested in Samanasuk Formation, which also flowed gas and condensate at a rate of 4.68 million cubic feet of gas and 180 barrels of crude per day at a wellhead pressure of 926 Psi at 36/64, choke size with excellent gas heating value of 1128 BTU/SCF and Condensate of 58 @600F API.
The testing of Lockhart Formation flowed commercial quantity of Crude Oil @500 barrels a day with wellhead flowing pressure of 155 psig of 22 API @600F at 32/64 choke size.

The exploration firm will benefit the most out of it and take it back to their own country. No one knows, some corrupt politician has approved deal that the firm takes 70-80% of what is found and leave remaining for the state.

@Zak The quantities stated are very small. As such, the need for TAPI will remain. Anyone familiar with the Oil & Gas knows Pakistan growing needs require Iran Pakistan as well as TAPI.
Moreover, PTI has nothing to do with it. Such explorations are done by International companies , some of which form joint venture with Pakistani Companies. All of them follow the agreements and Terms and Conditions stipulated by OGDC etc. Nothing to do with any political party.

Pakistan does not have large oil deposits by nature. Geology of Pakistan suggests it is unlikely. But it is possible to find good natural gas reserves sufficient to help domestic needs. Large parts of Pakistan have not been survey seismologically because of miscellaneous reasons. Like political, law and order, lack of investment, government policies and lack of road infrastructure. This well indicates presence of deposits in that area and suggests likelihood of further successful discoveries. If modern techniques are used, it can lead to good output and take pressure off from imports. However it is not likely to make Pakistan an exporter of gas or oil.

This is just an indicator discovery of no commercial value because 160 barrels per day cannot meet the minimum pumping costs. However, it gives an idea for further explorations

@Bitter truth Rest of the world is not exclusively focusing on renewable energy. All the developed countries including USA,UK are giving lot of emphasis on the SHALE Oil and SHALE Gas production which is not at all environmentlly firendly. So is the case with Canadian SAND Oil. While processing their waters are being polluted with heavy metals. Even then theri government is continuing production.
Please study before you start commenting and writing on any subject. We always criticize our goverment, institutions, departments for everything, we are compulsive critics (negative) by nature when it comes to our country.

Lafanga - You want to know in simple English? Okay...here it is. The truth is that Pakistan has a lot of natural wealth, be it gold, copper, oil and gas or other things. But another truth is that you have the lousiest political leaders in the world. I admit that Indian politicians are VERY corrupt. But Pakistani politicians are corrupt and also incompetent.
You have coal in Thar and that we in India also know. But we also know that you can't mine your own coal efficiently. The Chinese will have to do it. As we say in India "Iman aur niyat dono mein kami hai".

There is much more under Pakistani soil, it just need to be discovered instead of focus on imports with heavy kickbacks. Allow drill more wells for oil and gas, we may not have to import 70% of fuel at all!

@M.Saeed Its feasibility mainly rely around gas and not the oil, which is just condensate (light hydrocarbon and not the heavy crude). Oil will come with the gas and additional efforts to recover oil will not be required.

Small fields can be used to train technicians and pay the cost of research and developments .é
Pakistan needs technical manpower in all branches of human endeavour.Small oil or gas fields may not be able to be exploited commercially.But they can still be used for the training and development of technical manp00wer.If luck gives you only lemons try to convert it into lemonade.
