Rights activist honoured with Global Citizen award

Syeda Ghulam Fatima, a Pakistani human rights activist was honoured on Sunday with a Global Citizen award in New York for her dedication to civil rights and labour laws in Pakistan.
Fatima is the elected general secretary of the Bonded Labour Liberation Front (BLLF) Pakistan.
The activist works for the compliance of the International Labour Organisation’s labour standards in Pakistan, and campaigning for the legal rights of brick kiln workers and female domestic staff working through out Pakistan.

Fatima is also a member of the Provincial Committee for Abolition of Bonded Labour Punjab and the District Vigilance Committee.
During his recent visit to Pakistan, photo blogger Brandon Stanton of Humans of New York (HONY) coordinated with Fatima for the relief of bonded labour in Pakistan. HONY did a photo feature depicting Fatima’s struggle as an activist working towards the abolition of bonded labour in the country.
HONY termed Fatima as a modern day Harriet Tubman, and paid tribute to the rights activist who has been shot, beaten and electrocuted during her struggle for ending bonded labour, a form of modern day slavery. HONY’s images had such an impact, that people from around the world donated $2 million to BLLF.
Clinton Global Citizen Awards were established in 2007, and is meant to honour outstanding individuals who bring positive and lasting social change in their communities.

Congratulations. How many hidden gems we have in Pakistan and why someone from outside discovers them?
Bonded labour is a thnig of distant past - of dark ages. Our country is much too advanced to have bonded labour. I hope Ms. Fatima and her team would get a big contribution from citizens and the state to eleminate this dark spot in our society.

Why does it have to be a New Yorker to take up the cause of a great Pakistani woman fighting modern day slavery? Where is our over zealous media? Where are our human rights lawyers? Are you good for only reporting on Imran Khan marriage woes, likes of Mumtaz Qadri and reporting on what Salman Khan and other Indian actors rant about on social media? Or even worse, Meera's broken English?

Syeda, you are a shining star of humanity, and hopefully an inspiration to many others to undertake the causes of those that most people do not care for, or give a second thought about. I don't agree with your argument. This lady has been doing a genuine struggle for a genuine cause. A reward well deserved and still a long way yo go. Bonded labour is real issue at hand in our country. However, Malala's case does not make any sense at all when you start connecting the dots. Firstly, the people who made problems in Swat region at one point in time are non-state actors. Which means the problem was not a representative one. Secondly the way her profile was 'fabricated' is totally an unreal scenario.
Point to pondee is that why the whole nation unanimously supports Ghulam Fatima and why there is so much controversy surrounding Malala? So I would say, comparing this brave lady with Malala would be unfair and would indeed undermine her efforts and cause. So please, try to see things logically. Thanks!

@Khan Politicians are no doubt to be blamed... But this is so sad to see our youngsters so ignorant about our army. It takes more than courage to send a young son to die for the mother land, to serve her in all the difficulties, to leave their loved ones behind and answer the call of duty just so people like us live and look at us how ungrateful we are,.. what they are doing is commendable if you are breathing the air in a free country it is all because of the army, if this wasn't for army the politicians would have sold this country along with all of us by now... turn off the fox news and Educate yourself boy.
