ISLAMABAD: Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, while addressing a gathering at Royal United Services Institute in London, said that Kashmir is an unfinished agenda of Indo-Pak partition which needs to be resolved for the sake of peace and stability in the region.
According to details of the gathering shared by Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa on Twitter, the army chief said on Friday that “Indian intransigence and the violations at Line of Control are negatively affecting the region”.
Pakistan's security environment is becoming conducive for upward economic trajectory and the military will continue its efforts towards bringing total security in the country, General Raheel was quoted as saying.
Talking about the ongoing peace process in Afghanistan, the army chief said that Pakistan’s military and government supports enduring and permanent peace in Afghanistan.
General Raheel urged all the stakeholders to beware of the detractors and spoilers who intend to sabotage the reconciliation process between the two countries.
He went on to say that Pakistan holds brotherly ties with Afghanistan. “There is dire need of border management and international cooperation to make regional peace possible.”

Earlier, General Raheel Sharif had said on Thursday that China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project would be a game-changer and usher in an era of prosperity in the region.
“We will do everything to make it a success,” he said during interactions at the International Institute for Strategic Studies and House of Commons in London.

I live in USA and many of my Indian friends told me Kashmiris and Indians are exactly the same people. I never argued with them but it was a bit shocking to hear that. As a Pakistani Pakhtun my unbiased opinion is that I do not see any similarities b/w an average Kashmiri and an average Indian or Pakistani. Why can't India and Pakistan let Kashmiris decide about their future?

The General states "...the military will continue its efforts towards bringing total security in the country". A good thought, but the question is why was it allowed to degenerate into an insecure country in the first place? Lack of a secure environment has been a primary cause for the poor economic state of the Pakistani nation. Assuming there is sincerity for development and it begins now, it will still be a generation or two before any change is visible. An insecure Pakistan has been the main reason for our region's instability since independence.

@WiseMan True Sir! Our Army is involved in many initiatives which is not the case in Democratic world. When two democratic nations engage they deal with each other through the set of norms and Institutional process. Paksitan is a Muslim state and democratic institutions are so weak that our responses are often one sided or not coherant with the expectations of democratic norms. I think this is a very big gap between the communication of Indo-Pak.

@Khan, in a country so big like India, there is no similarity if you travel 50-100 km from one point to another as dialect changes, food changes etc. I'm sure same is true about Pakistan.
If everyone start talking about self-determination, we all will end of into a country with a single house hold. Partition of India was a big blunder in many ways as it did not solve any issue, problem continues in one way or another. So no point of dividing country further. People need to learn to live together.

The leadership from both sides like to make bolder and bolder statements to gain popularity and keep their jobs safe. We fools support them without understanding that a united south asia (at least economically) would be much more developed and progressive instead of breaking it into pieces. We need to work towards building positive relationship with all countries in south asia and make it a free trade zone. We almost waisted 70 years and there is no solution, growth and prosperity. The rich are getting richer and the poor remains poor generation after generation. The educated people prefer to live in west instead of using their education to develop our society. We continue to enjoy these bold words and our livelihood in poverty with such a big population.

@WiseMan Your right. Pakistan at its inception inherited an army that was disproportionately larger than its size and resources. To justify its size and the expenditure to maintain it the military establishment needed an enemy and found it in India through Kashmir.
Even when politicians would like to resolve this issue, military establishment wouldn't let them and like to keep it alive to justify the large item of expenditure in the countries budget.

General Raheel Sharif (COAS) has all the right to discuss and point out to the forums he has addressed to make them aware of what challenges and issues are faced by Pakistan on his own behalf and on behalf of the nation he serves as the Army's Chief.
Who knows better than Pakistan Army Chief the issues of terrorism in Pakistan, and its national interest. Pakistan COAS knows it's internal and external security issues that Pakistan faces. Kashmir is an outstanding issue between India and Pakistan that must be resolved at all cost to bring harmony between two nations.
Afghanistan is a party to all that is happening in the South Asia region. Afghanistan's role will be maximized due to mutual trade interests in creating brotherly relations between people of Afghanistan, India and Pakistan, when Kashmir issue is resolved between India and Pakistan. Peace will be established in the region only after Kashmir and other issues between India and Pakistan is resolved. Let the COAS prevail.

Yes, Kashmir is unfinished agenda; it has been so ever since the Pakistan supported Rebels crossed over to take Kashmir away from India. India finally fought back and reversed the occupation for most part, EXCEPT, of course, the part that is still being occupied by Pakistan; yes, that is still unfinished business. Why is this so difficult to understand??? One of the conditions for UN Resolution that Pakistan has been harping about, was for Pakistan to vacate the area it occupied during the Rebel Invasion; that never happened: how any one from Pakistan, in his right mind, demand that India pull back from its Kashmir while Pakistan still occupies illegally it acquired illegally????????

As long as Pakistan military persists in keep alive the issue, the logic of predominance of the military in State discourse will find its way, and the basic issues of Pakistan citizens will remain in the back seat.
It would be more productive if state elites communicate that how the resolve of Kashmir will transform the life of ordinary Pakistan citizen. Every general,who takes charge in Pak,has to adopt aggressive stance on India through Kashmir,to justify their relevance and expenditure beyond accepted levels of GDP. Give credit to Nawaz. He made a sincere efforts in 1999/2000, mushraff upset the peace initiatives of Atal ji through is bus drive. Now,nawaj ji is remote controlled by general Sharif for all foreign affairs.

2.India for majority Hindu polulation areas or states,
Kashmir was and is a majority Muslims state then and now.

Absolutely. Read the agreement between the Maharaja of J&K, UN resolution and Shimla agreement and vacate the Indian territory of Kashmir Occupied by Pakistan ,at the earliest. The unfinished agenda may become death nail for Pakistan sooner than later.

@Khan ....Indeed a great statement and it would enhance it more if military in both India and specially in Pakistan stay away from their personal interest...and think of this region...There is some self-interest behind every friendship. There is no friendship without self-interests. This is a bitter truth.At times i think...It's an intolerable abuse of power to have employees who are supposed to be advancing the public interest actually working on political campaigns.

The whole idea of a Muslim homeland was that the muslims of the subcontinent wanted to live in it. However only a third of the subcontinents muslim reside in Pakistan. In fact, more muslims live in India than Pakistan. Then why should Kashmir belong to Pakistan?
