Bilal Asif reported for suspect bowling action

Bilal Asif, Pakistan's star performer in the third one-day international against Zimbabwe, has been reported on Tuesday for a suspect bowling action, ESPNcricinfo reported.
Asif will be required to undergo an assessment test at an International Cricket Council's (ICC) accredited laboratory within 14 days.
The ICC is expected to issue a formal notice in this regard shortly but team manager Intikhab Alam confirmed Asif's action had been questioned.
“The match officials have reported a few of Asif's deliveries as suspect,” Alam told AFP by phone from Harare.
“It's disappointing for a new player who has just made his mark at the international level,” he said.

Offspinner Asif outlined his potential value to Pakistan ahead of upcoming games against England as his five-wicket haul clinched the decisive one-dayer against Zimbabwe a day before.
Playing in just his second ODI, Asif decimated the Zimbabwe line-up with figures of 5 for 25 as the hosts were bowled out for 161, then scored 38 as Pakistan chased their target in 34 overs to win by seven wickets.
The 30-year-old was a late addition to Pakistan's ODI squad at the behest of Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who felt the offspinner could come in handy against England's slew of left-handers in a three-match series that starts on October 13.

Earlier, all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez was banned from bowling for 12 months after his action was found to be illegal for the second time since November 2014.
He was initially reported after the first Test against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi last year and was subsequently banned after an independent analysis found his action to be illegal.
Hafeez was later cleared to bowl in April after changing his action but the part-time off-spinner was again reported by match officials for a suspect action during August's Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.

Ace right-arm spinner Saeed Ajmal was also suspended from bowling after the ICC had declared his action as illegal in September 2014. But after going through assessment tests in Chennai on Jan 24, Ajmal was cleared to play by the ICC's Technical Committee.

This is the height of it! Pakistan should strongly protest about the unfounded ICC tactics to castigate naturally talented Pakistani bowlers. Limiting the bending of arm which is a natural gift can be anybody's treasure irrespective of geography. Already we have seen many bowlers being removed from the game due to this inhuman rule. It needs immediate expunge for the health of the game.

saeed ajmal rightly said that 99% of off spin bowlers , if they take the test, will fail it. I play cricket in my free time and I can understand how hard it is to bowl "correctly" when the only turn you're going to get is through "pushing" (chucking) the ball and most offies do it to get spin. you can only reach the level of nathan lyon by staying in the limits and trust me, no one would like to emulate his career.

I was totally expecting this outcome. Soon you'll hear that Yasir Shah also has questionable bowling action, followed by any half successful Pakistani bowler. This revelation is hilarious, the main goal behind this game by ICC is to humiliate and disheart Pakistani players by constant pressure. PCB should squire services of an unbiased bowling expert to review any and all bowlers prior to any tour.

Asif action was suspicious, it was evident in the match. No wonder, he is a late bloomer at 30, PCB might have known this all along. Thought, that he might fall in through the cracks. He should go to either Australia or England for his bowling arm test. People should not take his side, it's PCB who is at fault. Disgracing players and country, better to loose 10 times, than be called a suspect/cheat.

they paid millions to saqlain mushtaq to rectify saeed ajmal bowling action when it was initially reported. It could have been taken as a lesson by pcb to form a committee of specialist spinners providing them and then make a criteria to ask such young comers to undergo a test before getting selected for international team. Times are changing fast and those who don't keep pace with it are lost in woods & dark. BUT here no one is senior to his / her profession and all are just looting & plundering the wealth of taxpayers..!!

Why does it happened time and again against the Pak bowlers? I guess, it's the result of the bad umpiring system prevailing in Pakistan. If they do pious enough to warn suspected bowlers earlier about their defective bowling at the domestic level, this could have been stopped in the international arenas.

I think the issue really starts at grass roots level where young kids are probably not taught how to bowl. A lot of these lads seem self taught and receive professional coaching years later when they join teams and organisations. I'm from Yorkshire and have played amateur and semi pro level here. I've seen guys from Pakistan play and also get called for 'throwing' during bowling in matches I've played. I'm talking really bending your arm and flicking the ball. This isn't a conspiracy but a problem that needs to be addressed by the PCB and especially at grass-roots level for the youngsters

Talk about deja vu. Even on a short 10 day tour against Zimbabwe we're being called for suspect action. He's 30 years old, so must have played a few 1st class matches. The poor guy has turned from hero 24 hours ago to zero and now his career could be over if he's found guilty since it's hard to change action at his age. Maybe he'll get some help from Mushtaq or Saqlain with his action.

Instead of pinpointed specific players, all bowlers should go through THIS test before they are allowed to bowl in international cricket. This is the only fair way to do it. That way there wont be any biases or conspiracies left to argue about.

@Riz Age doesn't matter, you will find so many players who played cricket till their 40s including all-rounders. So your reasoning that he should be dismissed on the basis of being over 30, ( which is usually the age and even above that someone in any field might get his first break) is prone to dismissal itself. The dispute is about why Pakistani bowlers are being singled out recently on suspicious action etc. There are only some possibilities, either there is something wrong with Pakistani cricket officials who can't suspicious action from usual one or that is some other factor involved which is bringing a bad name to Pakistani cricket

I bet its Sikandar Raza who complained. He complained about the bad light when he saw their defeat and Shoaib on 96 also. I know he must have a grudge because he didnt get a chance to play for Pakistan team but life is life. I wish at some point we can all become honest and be a successful nation.

@A common pakistani The reason I said that unfortunately in sub continent not all players are super fit like Misbah and Younis and if you think his action was good and he was wrongfully accused then PCB should defend him all the way but so far I have not seen any country tried to fight for his bowler when reported for suspect bowling action.

I don't think Bilal has illegal bowling action after looking his bowling. If he has suspected action then all bowlers bowling actions are suspected. You can judge many suspected bowlers by just looking their actions but still they declared clean. I am sure he will come out clean and send match officials for special training to know what is definition of suspected bowling action?

@Riz There are only some possibilities, either there is something wrong with Pakistani cricket officials who can't tell suspicious action from usual one or that is some other factor involved which is bringing a bad name to Pakistani cricket. I never said he was wrongfully accused, But I don't think the cricket officials who include many of the past big names are that incompetent that they cant even distinguish between a suspicious action, I think a more practical solution of avoiding this mud-slinging is that every bowler must go through an initial review of his bowling action. Btw, the possibility that he could be wrongfully accused could not be eliminated because international cricket is complicated with so much commercialization, it is not like history, you know. Cricket, of late, especially in some countries has become very distant from any discipline, match fixing, suspicious actions etc being some factors maligning this gentleman's game

@Riz about defending by boards etc, either the bowlers get cleared after a while or the board isn't systematic enough to operate a board in a transparent manner. Anyway, I think players also get their bans revoked or actions reviewed after some time.

Another wicket claimed by BCCI. His action is just fine and there is no problem. why they do not see problem with Harbajan or Ashwin. This is a big conspiracy against Pakistan. The ICC is BCCI. It makes my stomach sick

Still a better and more legal action than Ravichandran Ashwin, any day. Indian's are only flooding on Dawn today to vent their frustrations on yesterday's uncivilized incident & hooliganism at Cuttack. Indian fans frustration are pretty evident at the moment as they lost hope in their team and instead are scavenging on fault in others. As far as incident, what better to tell the credibility of officials who just the other day doesn't even have light meters to check light, yet called off the play on personal whims.

I have not read any comments but I am sure Pakistanis must be blaming India, England, etc. and conspiracy theory. Please at least do not send him to India for testing as you do not believe in testing in India and then again start your conspiracy theories.

Why am I not surprised,since I'm not an expert,like many here commenting,I will leave it to the experts.But I can't help but wonder why any time a Pakistani bowler have success,people start looking for reasons to malign his GOD given abilities.

@Juggernaut , and all those illegal /suspect bowling actions are always reported against Pakistan, ICC radar is only working on Pakistani bowlers, a bit too much to digest.

I just wonder how much it cost to PCB and ICC to send one player for testing abroad. I think ICC need to find another better way and explain how the match referee determine weather the action is legal or not. Do you know if those match referee certified on judging bowling action? I don't think ICC train them and they have any schooling regards about judging the bowling action just looking over the TV screen. I think if referee found the action illegal they should give player yellow card first and then if they still see something wrong during the game then they punish them and forfeit from the game and suspend for few games and follow the same procedure again. Captains of the team also should be responsible for the team bowling action procedure and if Captain's see something wrong he should take immediate action on this matter. Let's change this old British rules and bring some flavor to the cricket.

@Indian that's umpire's job to stop him from bowling. Yesterday I watched his wicket taken video on facebook, within 2 second, I noticed his action is not clear, how come umpires was not taking any action?

The 'controversial' win by Zimbabwe had a stamp of BIAS written all over it (and correctly reported in Sports Columns as such), which should be investigated by the notorious ICC instead of going after poor Bilal Asif. The umpires in the second ODI should have allowed both sides "equal" opportunity, viz. 48 overs each as rain had already delayed the start of that match. Anyway, there is no point in crying over spilt milk. This goes for the final match as well, which was convincingly won by Pakistan.

I am seeing a trend that although the bowlers are scrutinized for tiniest of things, no one bats an eye as the batting side gets more and more leeway. Is it because India has always been a traditional batting side? And with the big three inclusion they are giving more advantage to batsmen? I don't know. (E.g In the 80s only a few could flick a ball to six like viv richards or clive lloyd. Now with weighted bats, cork, lowered sweet spot, even I could hit a 6 if I got lucky. That is why I hold Sunil Gavaster higher on my personal "best cricketers" list than tendulkar. All I can say as if they keep mucking about with rules making life easier for batting side, next generation will see 11 hitters in a team. And people will wonder why every one watches rugby now. Please ...for the love of the game...keep batting and bowling balanced.

@Dr,Sadaf it shows the lack of competence of PCB and the bodies under (clubs, provinces etc) to identify the issue at grass root level. How can bowling coaches in Pakistan not be blamed for all these bowlers with questionable actions surfacing at the top level of the game?

Incompetent PCB does not perform its duties and players suffer because of that. They should screen bowlers at U16 and U19 level. And check all the bowlers in the first class setup. Every one can see that his bowling action isn't clean then why couldn't our domestic umpires and officials detect it earlier?

There is no end of talent in Pakistan. If the bowling action of Bilal Asif is suspected, he must be made to pass the test, as per the set standards of international cricket. If cleared, he can play and if not, he may be replaced with some other talented boy.
