Row over ad about ‘unknown Rangers’

KARACHI: A row erupted between police and the Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, on Tuesday when police issued advertisements in local dailies seeking public assistance in tracing of at least six missing persons allegedly picked up by “unknown Rangers” from parts of Orangi Town.
Desperate attempts were made by the Sindh government and police authorities to avert a crisis as first Home Minister Suhail Anwar Siyal took “notice” of the advertisement and then Sindh IG Ghulam Hyder Jamali set up an inquiry committee to look into the matter.

“The advertisements titled `announcement’ also carried photograph of each missing person and sought public support appealing to them to share information about the missing persons if anyone had any so that their recovery could be made possible,” said a police official citing content of the advertisements.
“The advertisements were released by a DSP rank officer who holds the office of sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Orangi Town.” Under due process, the advertisement was recommended by the SP investigation who is abroad these days. The DSP was named only `as contact person’ because the missing persons were residents of areas under his jurisdiction.
Though there was no official reaction from the Pakistan Rangers, Sindh, sources said the issue had been discussed at the highest level which led to the taking of notice of the matter by the home minister.
The Sindh IG suspended the DSP concerned and set up the committee under additional IG CTD Sanaullah Abbassi to investigate the matter.

No doubt it is well thought out strategy of the PPP to avenge rangers for crack down on its criminal leadership. It should be seen in the background of outburst by Zardari before absconding to Dubai and recent sermon of Raza Rabbani.
Army should not take it lightly. Safe Haven of Dubai for hatching conspiracy against Pakistan should not be allowed.

Rangers can shot anybody even if he is unarmed civilian and begging mercy for doing nothing wrong ... Recall the incident in Karachi when a young man was shoot and that the video went viral and was shown by all tv channels.
Anybody knows about the punishment given to the shooter - if any ?

Rangers are not above the law. Rangers posted in urban sindh and I repeat the ones posted in urban sindh are as corrupt as the police unfortunately. What do people think they have been doing in urban sindh for the last 20 years? Plus rangers are constantly using media to malign others then why they can't be exposed in media?

In which democratic country some one is picked up without due process or even chalaan? Cheapest thing in Pakistan is some ones life especially the poor class. No objection on rangers picking up suspects but without any paper work or trace ? That's abduction.

Our federal Law Enforcement agencies ruined entire Baluchistan by making people missing by force & now repeating the same mistake even in Karachi making people missing. This is most unfortunate.

The Sindh Govt is trying hard to save the corrupt elements in Sindh Police from Rangers and other High ups to hide their misdeeds.They are doing these to restrict the powers of Rangers so that their culprits are not exposed to courts and people.I hope the Federal Interior Minister shall take up the matter at highest level and bring these culprits to book.Three cheers for Rangers and Army they are doing wonderful job of cleaning the mess.

Your so called democratic society was thriving with Bhatta, kidnapping for ransom, gun culture, street crimes, extortion under supervision heads of Political parties sitting in assemblies .Rangers are surely sore in their eyes and thats what is clearly showing now.It seems police is seriously concerned by improving law and order situation thats why they are compaigning against Rangers.

Yes! the police can seek public assistance but not by naming Rangers as people who kidnapped them. If you have read the Ad, such ads must be approved by the high up authority before release for the press.

Yes ! SC had to take up suo moto notice, case filed & those responsible were given punishment. Out of 5 accused Ranger personel, 1 was given death penalty & the other 4 under going life prisonment. Has any police personel going through such punishment ?

I have a feeling that if the Rangers' powers are not reined in, they will lose Karachiites' support and the operation will backfire - it's like the 90s all over again. There has to be thorough accountability of the Rangers and it should be made public to everyone. Karachiites' genuine support is crucial to eliminating crime and corruption.

As per law, the report of any missing person is made in the relevant thana and police is within their rights to take measures to find the missing persons. There should not be much fury over this issue.

When the police say "Unknown Rangers" it clearly means that the y were impostors in Ranger's uniforms. Before advertising, Police must have contacted Rangers about their involvement or otherwise.

It is the moral responsibility of the state to safeguard the lives of public and the moral responsibility of the judiciary to make sure the criminal are prosecutes as per the law of the land... no one should be above the laws... When police/ rangers or prosecutors conceal significant exculpatory or impeaching material, we hold, it is ordinarily incumbent on the state to set the record straight.

How stupid. If Rangers picked up the personnel a quarry should have been made with the Rangers Headquarter, at the most with the Corps Headquarter. Giving Ads amounts to degrade the Rangers. The DSP who is the originator of the Ad and the SP who approved it must be removed from the service forthwith and barred from all other public offices for the future.
