KARACHI: Former Pakistan captains Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq praised hard-working and committed Younis Khan who became the country's leading Test run scorer on Tuesday.
Younis, 37, overtook Miandad's tally of 8832 runs made in 124 Tests -- a record which stood for 22 years on the opening day of the first Test against England in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
Younis jumped out of his crease and heaved off-spinner Moeen Ali over deep mid-wicket for a big six, crossing Inzamam's 8830 runs and Miandad's aggregate in one stroke.
Younis was finally dismissed for 38 and now has 8852 runs in 102 Tests.
“I am happy that my record is broken by a patriot who plays for the team and for the country,” Miandad told AFP.
“He is a very hard working player who has made his name through his commitment and honesty.”
Miandad added that Younis has always been a good student of the game.
“Younis had played under my coaching and I have always found him a great student of the game who is always willing to learn and always ready to put in a committed effort, which is the hallmark of a great sportsman,” said Miandad.
Miandad said Younis had made good contribution to Pakistan cricket.
“I wish him the best of luck and now he has broken the record I hope he will not stop, and play as well as he has done in the past 15 years,” said Miandad.
Inzamam, who skippered Younis from 2003 to 2007, said Younis was someone who takes pride in his hard work.
“When he came into the team I found that he was not very talented but he overcame that through his hard work,” said Inzamam.
“He has scored runs whenever the team needed them the most and that is the sign of a great team man.”

It's been a difficult journey for both Younis Khan as a batsman and the average cricket lover in Pakistan to acknowledge him.
He lacks the charm of Imran Khan or the aggression of Shahid Afridi. Isn't respected half as much as Inzi was Or considered to be as talented as Saeed Anwar, but today he proves he is indeed made of the same clay that defines greatness. His cool as cucumber temperament and perfectly balanced composure will tell a tale for many a years to come.
Well done Younis Khan. Just like the runs, you have finally accumulated well deserved acknowledgment and respect from Pakistan in the most laborious and hard earned manner. I will surely remember to tell my children about you.

Isn't Younis the same person who for personal reasons left Pakistani team in limbo by abandoning his responsibility as Captain of Pakistan team just before last tour of Australia in 2009/2010.

Congrats to YK for breaking the record, but one thing I cannot understand that the moment he made the record he lost his interest and focus and got out for 38, he should have played more as the moment and the day was special. Did he only come to make the record or play for Pakistan?

Yes, and his personal reasons were that Shoaib Malik revolted against him and swear along with eight other players that they will not play under his captaincy. May be because he getting all the attention after winning the T20 World Cup.
Anyone with a little sense of cricket could see the results of that pledge in the final match of three one ODIs series between Pakistan vs New Zealand in 2009-10.

Inzimam, "Not very talented ???" That explains how much you understand cricket.
There are so many aspects to being a good cricketer other than just looking good while you play strokes. Inzi, you tried your best to get rid of Yunus khan. I can almost hear Yunus say to you ..." in your face......"

Despite the crooks in the board, players politics, team management including coaches, critics negativism, Younas Khan never lost his resilience, commitment and focus. Infact, that proved to be a blessing in diguise for him as it even furthur motivated and brought the best out of him. Today the same people who for a long time kept on saying that he does not deserve to be in the team are all praise for him. Younas Khan is a gem of a person and Pakistans greatest batsman ever. Well done, you truly deserved it.

Of all, Najam Sethi using his propagandist mind used Ramiz, Waseem and Shoaib to issue statements in the media advising Younas Khan to give up coming back to ODI and retire from cricket. That had put alot of pressure on Younas Khan and one could tell today from his style, he was trying to respond to those comments. I believe he should play at own style without being reacting to such statements. Neither of those names are greater in stature than Younas khas so far as batting is concerned. So he should do only what he has been doing for the last so many years. He should be allowed to cross 10K mark to make history. So good luck once again

@Dare....... He didn't leave the team on his own,rather it was a conspiracy by match fixers to oust him so that the road for them is clear to do what they wanted. He had won a World Cup for Pakistan but was rewarded by such shameful treatment. PCB was a part of the conspirators.

Younis Khan is a great Player. His services to the game and the nation should be lauded by us all. He has shown by his good example what a cricketer should be. There is no doubt about his commitment to the game.
He is a great role model for the younger generation of Players on and off the field. He adjusts to the situation as needed. His Perseverance and commitment has made him a class act. finally we can take pride that someone like Younis Khan has broken Javed Miandad's 22 long years' record.
We highly commend him for achieving this unique honor. Wish him all the best to continue playing strokes and accumulating Runs in the test Cricket.

Others commenting here have heaped praise on Younis Khan and it is all deserved. As an Australian, I can say that he is widely regarded in this part of the world as not just a very good batsman but "the Mister Nice Guy" of international cricket. He plays the game with a smile on his face, good cheer and grace. Even the boorish characters in the game agree with his "Nicer Guy" tag. Well done YK.

I stopped watching Pakistan cricket matches when 8 players of Pak team in 2009-10 pledged not to perform under YK's captaincy. But when ever I hear a news about YK breaking another record than I do read/watch that news and all the comments praising the great man. He and IK are my all time favorites.

Inzi is spot on in saying that Younis wasn't that talented when he joined the team. I remember he came at number 9 or 10 in an ODI on his debut. Noone expected him to be so successful. He was never the most talented, his techniques has many flaws that get exposed in moving conditions, but he proved that sheer hardwork, commitment and temperament is most important for best performance in test cricket

He may well have scored more runs than Miandad, but he has never been as good as Miandad. Miandad was a different type of player, dependable, really difficult to get out, got under the oppositions skin and best of all he swung matches. He had the rare ability to play his best cricket when it really mattered. This quality is so rare.
YK is more like tendulkar a stroke player on his day, but on many other days he comes and goes.
This is not to belittle Younis Khan's achievement which is great regardless. I simply don't think anyone has come close to filling the void that Miandad left in the national side when he retired.
