NEW DELHI: A village mob in northern India beat a Muslim man to death with sticks and injured four others who were accused of smuggling cows to be slaughtered for beef, police said on Friday.
The survivors were arrested for alleged animal cruelty. Hard-line Hindus have been trying to force a national ban on cow slaughter, triggering mob violence.
A Muslim man was lynched in Uttar Pradesh state last month over false rumours his family had eaten beef for dinner.

Officer Somya Sambhasivam said police were searching for villagers who fled after the attack on Wednesday in Sarahan, a village in Himachal Pradesh state. The area is nearly 260 kilometres north of New Delhi.
The mob chased the truck loaded with five cows and 10 bulls and attacked the five men in the vehicle, Sambhasivam said.
The five hid in the forest until police found them and took them to hospital, where one of them died, she said. Police arrested the four survivors for alleged cruelty towards the animals, causing injuries to them during transportation in the truck, she said.
Police were investigating whether the assailants belonged to a Hindu hard-line group.
The Press Trust of India said those attacked were all Muslims from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh state.
Violence by Hindu fringe groups has increased since Hindu nationalist Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party came to power last year.

Fast forward 2 years and I can see communal violence emerging in Assam and Bangal where RSS have issues with high growth of Muslim population. The old India known for its diversity and tolerance will be transformed into hardline hindutva state (Hindu Taliban). This can be avoided of course if INDIAN public wakes up and shuns this hate ideology

@Chitrali This would not be happening if India was not divided because the population of Hindus and Muslims would be close to 50/50. 250million in India, 200 Million in Pakistan and about 150 million in Bangladesh.

What happens when you catch a group that is stealing and running away with some 10 bikes from your locality? They stole grazing cows and were fleeing away into another state. Villagers chased them. These are interstate thieves who have a history of thefts. There is no Muslim angle in it. The culprits have dozens of cases registered against them, this is not complete news. You cannot steal someone's animals can you?

I condemn killing, beating in any aspect as it is a criminal offence. However, when the topic is beef, I wonder the hypocritical reaction from my Pakistani friends. Pork is banned throughout Pakistan because it hurts religion sentiments of Muslim population who is majority. Same formula is applicable to India where Beef is banned in some sates (not throughout India) not during Modi regime but during congress raj. So please request you not to see from different lence India just because of 1 or 2 incident which are really condemnable.

I am indian and I agree with most of the comments by Pakistania here. You just can't hurt a human for an animal. I have my disagreements with the folks here but you cant beat this logic. Period. Also I do not agree with people being killed for destroying religous books. You cant kill a human for destroying paper. Period. Both logics go together.

@EXPAT it would be worse. In kashmir Muslims are 90% but they are brutalised by Indian Hindu army. In Syria 25% Alawites are ruling over 75% Sunni, Iraq it was vice versa. It is whoever has the gun that rules. If Pakistan had not got independence from British, then the Baloch, Pathans , Pak punjab, sind would have made a Syria out of India.

As far as decrease in minorities myth in present day Pakistan is concerned ... look at the percentage of non Muslims in both east and west Pakistan immediately before partition. Then immediately after the partition. Then in 1971 when Bangladesh was formed. You need to know high school level maths and statistics to get your answer.

Although I am hurt when someone from any community is murdered for a silly reason but when some Pakistanis comment "Thank you Jinnah or reason Pakistan was created" they seem to show that there are rivers of milk and honey flowing in pakistan (although all major rivers flow from India). Didnt they know that how minorities are treated in Pakistan . but we are trying to resolve our issues slowly and steadily.
