PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) police’s special unit on Saturday arrested four people in Peshawar with alleged links to banned outfit Hizbut Tahrir (HuT).

Police sources told DawnNews that the four were activists of the proscribed HuT and were campaigning to bring more people into the organisation's fold.

The law enforcement personnel also claimed to have confiscated pamphlets, leaflets, news magazines and Compact Discs (CDs) aimed at promoting HuT agenda.

A personal computer, cellphones and few pistols were also recovered from the suspects who were moved to an undisclosed location for interrogation after registration of a First Information Report (FIR) of their arrest.

Banned in Pakistan in November 2003, HT is believed to be a global organisation that has organisational structure in several countries with main concentration in Muslim states.

Earlier this month, police in Karachi arrested an engineering and business graduate allegedly working for the HuT.

The suspect, Owais Raheel, targeted educated youth in the city's Defence and Clifton areas in order to use them “for illegal activities” with a view to implementing “Khilafa” in the country, the police had said.

Earlier too, we have seen attempts by the HuT to penetrate society and state circles.

Huge cache of arms recovered in Hangu

Meanwhile, in a raid in KP's Hangu district, security forces recovered a huge cache of heavy weapons from a terrorist hideout.

Security officials claimed that the weapons and ammunition were recovered from Hangu's Thall tehsil during a search operation initiated to avoid untoward incidents during Muharram processions.

Hangu has a history of attacks on Muharram processions, with most of these taking place on the 8th, 9th and 10th of the month. Most of these attacks are claimed by banned militant outfits targeting Shias.
