KOHAT: The Kohat police foiled an attempt of smuggling arms from Peshawar to Karachi here on Thursday.
Jarma police SHO Mohammad Afzal Awan told a press conference that district police officer Sohaeb Ashraf had received an intelligence report that an inter-provincial gang of weapon smugglers would take a consignment to Karachi from Peshawar via Kohat district. The police established barricades at several points on the Indus Highway between the two districts.
The police stopped a car (Sindh-AHS-905) at Sor Gul chowk and on search they found two foreign-made M4 rifles, two small machineguns, 28 9-mm pistols and 60 chargers in it. Two alleged smugglers Malang Jan, a resident of Peshawar, and Fazal Maula of Takht Bai, Mardan, were also arrested.
The police claimed that during preliminary investigations the two revealed that several groups hailing from tribal areas were involved in smuggling of arms and ammunition to Karachi.
The Jarma police have registered a case against the alleged smugglers.
GAS SUPPLY SOUGHT: The elders belonging to 32 villages of Patiala region have warned to stop oil and gas supply to Punjab if the area is not provided gas facility within 20 days.
The elders, including Fazal Ustad, Mehmoodur Rehman, Tahir Khattak, Kushdil Khan and Dr Ehsan of Muttahida Islahi Committee, said in a press statement here on Thursday that they had been repeatedly promised supply of gas during last one decade, but to no avail.
They threatened to stop the project for gas supply from the local fields to Punjab and block Rawalpindi road if their demand was not met.
