KABUL: A young Afghan woman who was married against her will has been stoned to death by extremists after she was caught eloping with another man, local officials told AFP Tuesday.
The graphic video shows the woman, named as Rokhsahana and aged between 19 and 21, being stoned.
Rokhsahana can be heard repeating the 'Shahada', or Muslim profession of faith, her voice growing increasingly high-pitched in the nearly 30-second clip run in Afghan media. Local authorities confirmed the footage.
The killing took place about a week ago in Ghalmeen, an area some 40 kilometres from the Ghor provincial capital of Firozkoh, governor Seema Joyenda said.
Rokhsahana had been "stoned to death by Taliban, local religious leaders and irresponsible armed warlords", Joyenda told AFP.
Joyenda, one of Afghanistan's only two female governors, said that according to authorities' information Rokhsahana's family had "married her to someone against her will and she was eloping with a man her age".
She condemned the stoning, calling on Kabul to take action to "clean the area".
"This is the first incident in this area but will not be the last. Women in general have problems all over the country, but especially in Ghor... The man with whom she was eloping has not been stoned."
Ghor police chief Mustafa Mohseni told AFP that the incident happened in an Afghan Taliban-controlled area, confirming that it was the first such incident "this year".

As per the Islamic faith a woman is entitled to marry who ever she wants to...indeed a barbaric act where tradition and custom supersedes the religious values... Then not only custom, but also nature affirms that to do is more disgraceful than to suffer injustice, and that justice is equality.People usually think according to their inclinations, speak according to their learning and ingrained opinions, but generally act according to custom. The symptoms may differ in Afghanistan and Pakistan but disease is the same

Nothing to do with Islam. The Taliban are not Muslims. In what Muslim faith is it allowed to rule using a dead person?
What the Taliban impose is a tribal law called Pakhtun Wali. It's a mash-up male centric laws in which women are lower than animals. This law is accepted by the majority of Afghans.
The man was not stoned because he was unmarried and therefore committed the lesser crime of fornication and not adultery.

Although this is a part of the sharia law but it has to be administered by an Islamic court of law. In the current situation the validity of this imposition is in doubt as the man involved in the crime is not punished. I have never heard of any man being punished for adultery in Pakistan.

I am sure this woman saw it coming! I mean how can you live in a third world country like Afghanistan, know fully well that an act like this will carry a stiff punishment and yet, go ahead and do it! I totally agree that it is barbaric, our religion does not condone such cruelty and the criminals who carried on such act should be punished - but come on - in Afghanistan, arranged marriages are very common and women don't have a say and cannot marry who they want to. Is it right - absolutely not! However, until we change the culture and educate the people, we should not act surprised to see such incidents.

I would like to say that because the girl was married against her will, it was not a valid marriage, and this punishment was not according to Sharia. It was not adultery, she was eloping. Adultery is almost impossible to prove under Islamic law. This was nothing but murder of an innocent girl by barbaric people.

@Haroon Religious extremism and honour killings of mainly women is very common in this region, killers are seldom punished as family members can pardon the culprit even if police complaint and case is made. Whole mix of social and religious system is biased towards women. Only women have to stand up like western women did and fight for their rights who were discriminated even more than Muslim societies, men may show sympathy but they shall never agree to give up their supremacy and will not agree to give them rights given to them by advanced Islamic rules, for example right to select life partner is invariably violated without any protest. Even this case is example of that, woman need not elope if her legitimate Islamic right was given to her and punishment is given to only woman while both were involved in the elopement, confirms inbuilt discrimination against women and society mind set that only women are supposed to follow and protect all cultural and religious moral standards.

Someone teach these mullahs what Islam says about marrying a woman to someone against their will, rights of one's wife, right of a woman to get a divorce if she's unhappy with the marriage (Kul'a).
The family of the girl married her off to some older guy against her will. First incident of gross injustice. She was clearly not happy with her husband and should've been accorded the right to get a divorce. Second incident of gross injustice. Last and the most egregious of them all, she was stoned to death for the alleged crime of 'eloping with another man'. While the man walks scot-free, this poor girl was stoned to death -- I suspect on charges of adultery. Third incident of gross injustice.

My question to all on this forum: Given that all situations / circumstances of a "crime" are prescribed in Islamic Law, is it then OK to stone a man / woman for adultery? Is that the agreed / prescribed Islamic punishment for a case of "without-a-doubt" adultery?
