Former cricketers Abdul Qadir and Sarfaraz Nawaz have expressed surprise at Younis Khan's decision to retire from ODIs saying that the way he quit was totally incomprehensible.
Younis Khan on Thursday announced that he would retire from ODI cricket after the first match against England at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The- 37-old played 264 ODIs in a career that spans over 15 years. With 7240 runs, he is currently sixth on the list of highest run- getters for Pakistan in ODIs.
In the recently concluded Test series against England, he overtook Javed Miandad's record to become Pakistan's highest run-scorer in Tests.
Former leg-spin wizard, Abdul Qadir, who had urged Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to include Younis Khan in ODI squad for the series against England, said that the decision was as surprising to him as to all others.
“The decision comes as a huge surprise to me. Though, a player can announce retirement any time, I was not expecting him to leave at this stage, especially when he himself has been pressing the board to include him in the team,” said Qadir.
“Neither the PCB nor the selection committee wanted him to be part of the team. But he insisted to play one-day cricket. Several people, including me backed him but now he is saying that he has taken the decision after deep reflection and in consultation with friends and family.
“To me it is really strange,” he added.
Abdul Qadir was also of the view that the batsman had announced retirement in an undignified way.
“He broke legendary Javed Miandad's record and achieved the milestone of scoring 9000 runs in Test Cricket.”
“Soon after the conclusion of Test series he should have said that I'm retiring from one-day cricket to pave way for youngsters. This would have been most appropriate and honourable exit,” he maintained.
Former Test Cricketer Sarfraz Nawaz said if Younis Khan wanted to retire from ODI cricket after playing just one game then it was useless to put him in the squad adding that it would have been better to give chance to a deserving player.
By announcing his retirement, he said Younis had put the whole team under pressure.
“What if he doesn't perform in the first ODI and Pakistan loses the game?” he asked adding that in such a case he would be responsible as if he hadn't been in the team then some other deserving regular ODI player would have been in the team.
Sarfraz said that he was surprised as what compelled Younis to retire from ODI cricket as he forced the selectors to include him in the team and when that happened he announced the retirement midstream.
“I was among those who supported him when he was not getting a place in the ODI team, but retiring like that is not a wise decision at all,” he said.
He claimed that it was due to Younis Khan's inclusion in the squad that Chief Selector Haroon Rasheed flew to Dubai and convinced the team management for that.
“I think he should have waited for the series to end. If he was to retire like that then there was no need to push the PCB,” added Sarfraz.

Abdul Qadir is Spot on regarding Younus's decision . After all , he has proved by his decision making process ( compared to his insistence on test cricket performance to justify is ODI selection, though his performance in ODI format does not give him any reason to be part of this format )

This quitting mid-way through a series, or in Shoaib Malik's case mid-way through a match needs to be stopped immediately.
Next you'll probably get a player who is out there batting and in mid-innings he'll announce his retirement.
This will then only be bettered by a bowler announcing his retirement mid-way through his run up.
Guys - you are national heroes. Please retire with some level of decorum, etiquette, protocol, convention, custom, taste and above all some plain old-fashioned coomon sense.

PCB should make a policy that no retirements will be announced during a series. Players can do so before the start or after the end of series.

The timing is really odd. He might as well have retired during the game, after the 25th over. My suspicion would be that there was some disagreement or he felt unwanted and decided it was his last game.

@Usman What would they do if player disobeys them? They will be retired anyway. Can't put ban on them :) Besides. they may have make a deal that Younis Khan will play one last ODI and then will retire and that is decent way to go. See Sewag in India is asking for the same thing. It is good that PCB gave that chance to YK and let him retire respectfully. It is the least we can do for our National Heroes.

A player can choose to hang up their boots whenever they want and a player of the stature of Younis has wholly earned this right.
Many may question Younis' decision, but a lot of the timing may have to do with how he perceives the sentiment of the PCB and his team mates. Just seems odd that someone who had dogged determination to make the ODI team would just depart after one match.
The Board and the players should communicate with each other - too many stars have departed the Pakistani team without the respect they deserve. Its time a stop is put to that.

younis khan is a mirror of Pakistan cricket but some members of pcb like waqar n many more destroys them by using power of their position ............If any other country has such a player ..They would gave him so much respect which a player dont even expects form their fans ......
just make few chances in pcb ..If pak team did not become no 1 in all formats ..I will quit watching ..playing cricket .........100% granteed ...

YK should never be selected in any Pakistan team. He cannot be trusted anymore. He may announce his retirement in the middle, during or just before aa test match after finding out the fast wicket and swinging conditions. A player is chosen for a whole series and even injured players are substituted. Taking the place of a young star batsman and not using it is as good as getting admission in a medical school but dropping out mid-way. Both SM and YK should show some class and love for the country and behave as role models.

let him go. yk played his usual thing. " will retire on my own terms" and by media reports, selectors did want him back but team management didnt soboth had an issue over it few days ago. yk did make public statements about getting back in odis, but when selectors did that , he retired .
if yk had given hint, like chairman wanted, i am 100% sure they would not have selected him at all against team managements will. timing is obviously not good during a series. but right decision.
this way or that way, it was right decision. yk is no doubt pak's best test batsman ever produced but not even half of himself in odis for last many years. even today was not that good. so right decision in the end . selecting him was a step backwards. youngsters like haris, rizwan, babar, maqsood are there and dont just rule out umar akmal or fawad alam. so thats the way to go.
good luck to yk for test. should focus on it . its always pleasure to watch him in tests.

Unjustified and unreasonable statements by Sarfaraz and Qadir. Its pathetic how both of them are making a big deal out of this. The team needs to have reserve players in case even when people get injured as well. So the decision of Yunus Khan should not impact the team. Also, he is more of a test player than ODI player.
The management need to stop this riducule of issuing senseless statements.
They need to salute legends of the caliber of Younus Khan and give him the due respect.
Yunus Khan we salute you for all your hard and deserving accomplishments. He should have been the captain of the team and not Misbah for such long time.

I used to have lots of respect for Younis Khan. He was one of the greatest player of Pakistan. His record speaks for himself. But the way he resigned is not good. He has deprived one deserving middle order batsman to the Pakistani team. Now the team has to pick up his successor from the 14 existing player. He was always in argument with PCB over his exclusion from one day match team. I believe he took a revenge from PCB.

One should only retire when he feels it is time for him to retire. Other people saying it does not matter. Only younus knows what he needs to continue playing for Pakistan as a top Test batsman. Others can only select or not select or check if he can also make it in ODI like Malik if given a chance.

There is nothing wrong with his timing.With Mohammad Rizwan,Shehzad sitting out ,it was torture to see both guys missing out along with Imaad Wasim due to injury.Azaam should be put through paces in all format.Little maestro has long career ahead.Bats with steady head and has bright future ahead of him.

Trying to qualify for selection in any format of the game is every player's right. It should be none of our business when someone should retire. Therefore , the criticism on his retirement is totally uncalled for.
It is selectors' job to select the team on the basis of purely performance & fitness and not on seniority or any sentimental reasons. If selection committee thought that he deserved the spot then why this noise?
Problem arises when selection committee decides with heart and don't use mind.

Secondly, he would have been all geared up to play this series but when the news coming through was he wasnt wanted, how do you expect him to feel? The same thing happened to Misbah most of his career. Being called tuk tuk by the most careless cricketer ever. Miandad, Qadir and even Sarfraz had backed him, you dont need the opinion of armchair experts after that.
