SWABI: A police constable was killed and an assistant sub-inspector of Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) injured when unidentified attackers opened fire on them in the jurisdiction of Yar Hassain police station late on Friday night.

District police officer Javed Iqbal said on Saturday that the two policemen, who are brothers, had come to Yar Hussain police station for some important work. He said that unidentified gunmen attacked them when they were returning home.

When contacted, Yar Hassain police SHO Ajab Durrani told Dawn that the two policemen hailed from Gombat village of Mardan district. He said that they were going home on a motorcycle when they came under attack. He said that constable Shah Jehan, who was posted in Mardan, died on the spot, while his brother Zubair Khan, ASI in CTD Swabi, was seriously injured in the attack.

Soon after the incident, the police cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to track down the attackers. However, no arrest could be made.

The DPO said that it would be premature to link the incident with terrorism. The two policemen were in civil dress when they were attacked.

CTD officials have registered an FIR against unidentified attackers in Yar Hussain police station.

IMRAN’S VISIT: Local leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf have started preparations for their party chief Imran Khan’s visit to the district. In this regard, they have also held meetings with the Awami Jamhoori Ittehad Pakistan (AJIP) leaders to finalise arrangements for the visit.

The PTI chairman is scheduled to visit the district on Nov 22, to witness and formalize the merger of AJIP with PTI. He will also address a public meeting in Razaar tehsil.

Rangaiz Khan, PTI acting president, said that the workers of all areas of the district had been taken into confidence. He said that activists from other districts were also expected to attend the gathering.

The merger of the two parties, he said, would change the entire political scenario in the district. “We will dominate the district politics in future and the merger of AJIP with PTI will be a big step in this direction,” he said.
