KARACHI: Athletic-built pugilists of Army overcome stiff opposition from other two services — PAF and Navy – besides Wapda to retain overall trophy as curtains fell on the 35th National Boxing Championship at the KPT Sports Complex on Sunday.

The soldiers amassed 70 points by picking up three gold, two silver and five bronze medals to rein supreme in the competition participated by 15 affiliated units of the Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF).

The PAF, that too seized three golds, had to be contented with runners-up slot securing a tally of 65 points. The airmen ended up with 3-1-2 medals.

The third position went to Wapda who returned with a haul of 60 points capturing two golds and three silver medals.

The Navy also made their mark collecting 60 points from 1-2-5 medals to finish fourth on the table.

The HEC bagged the remaining one gold besides two silvers to attain fifth slot with 25 points finishing ahead of Sindh who pocketed five bronze.

President of the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) retired Lt Gen Syed Arif Hasan who graced the occasion awarded the winning trophy to manager of the Army team Lt Col Nasir Tung amidst applause.

The PBF president Doda Khan Bhutto, provincial secretary Sports and Youth Affairs Mohammad Rashid, POA secretary Khalid Mahmood, former Olympian boxers Malang Baloch, Rasheed Qambrani, Sindh Boxing Association officials Abid Brohi and Asghar Baloch were prominent among others who were present on the occasion.

Final results:

49 kg: Muhib Bacha (Wapda) bt Hsanain (Army) 3-0.

52 kg: Syed Asif (HEC) bt M. Nisar (Navy) 2-1.

56 kg: Naqeebullah (Wapda) bt Farhan (Army) 2-1.

60 kg: Naimatullah (PAF) bt Ali ahmed (Wapda) 2-1.

64 kg: Gulzaib (Army) bt Qadir Khan (Navy) 2-1.

69 kg: Arshad Hussain (PAF) bt Amir Khan (Wapda) 2-1.

75 kg: Tanveer Ahmed (Navy) bt Javed Akhtar (Railways) 2-1.

81 kg: Awais Khan (Army) bt Naem (PAF) 2-1.

91 kg: Ahmed Ali (Army) bt Sanaullah (Wapda) TKO first round.

+91 kg: Mehmood Hassan (PAF) bt Yasir Jameel (KPT) 2-1.
