Former Twenty20 captain Younis Khan remained unsold as the Pakistan Super League (PSL) draft concluded on Tuesday with Abdul Razzaq and Saeed Ajmal the most notable last-minute inclusions.
It is worth noting that Pakistan’s only World T20 title came under Younis’ leadership in 2009 and the 38-year-old had expressed a desire to feature in the PSL in a similar role.
His omission is likely to create another storm just weeks after the prolific batsman ended his ODI career amid much drama at the start of the England series.
Veteran all-rounder Razzaq and spin wizard Ajmal were, however, picked by Lahore Qalandars and Islamabad United, respectively, at the very end of the draft process as franchises opted for younger talent in the initial rounds.
On Monday, Pakistan’s T20 skipper Shahid Afridi became the first pick of the PSL after Peshawar Zalmi signed up the flamboyant all-rounder to play for its franchise.
With 308 cricketers on board, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) kicked off players’ drafting for ‘Platinum’, ‘Diamond’ and ‘Gold’ categories yesterday while players belonging to the ‘Silver’ and ‘Emerging’ categories were inducted into the league’s five franchises today.

Shahid Afridi said he would have loved to play for any team but it made more sense for him to play for Peshawar Zalmi because it complements the work his foundation is doing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s remote areas.
Giving credit to the PCB for organising the mega cricket league, Afridi said the platform should be used to promote new faces and to encourage new talent.
Karachi Kings didn’t hesitate in signing up the former captain Shoaib Malik to play for them, while Quetta Gladiators got England star Kevin Pietersen.
But Lahore Qalandars perhaps made the most interesting pick for its franchise by signing West Indian hardhitter Chris Gayle. Shane Watson of Australia was picked up by Islamabad United.
The PSL has already finalised the sale of commercial rights for franchises, broadcast, and title sponsorship.
“By opting for a draft system in place of a player auction, PSL will ensure a level-playing field as each team will have to choose a certain number of players from each category. As a result of this, each team will spend an equal amount on drafting players. Top players will, therefore, play for all five teams,” the PCB said in a statement.
The PSL player list includes 137 Pakistani and 171 foreign players. The short-listed players have been divided into five categories:
- Platinum
- Diamond
- Gold
- Silver
- Emerging
Each team will be required to pick three players per category from each of the top three categories (Platinum, Diamond and Gold).
While drafting of two emerging players will be mandatory, a team will also be able to pick up to five players from the ‘Silver’ category in order to complete the squad.
Each team will have a minimum of four foreign players in the playing 11. The inaugural edition of the PSL is scheduled to take place from Feb 4-23, 2016 in Dubai and Sharjah.

My best wishes to PSL and it looks very interesting and my favorite team will be Lahore Qalandars since I'm big fan of Chris Gayle and he play for my city Bangalore(RCB) as well. I hope it would be successful as Indian Premier league.

Karachi Kings are lacking in batting till now. There must be some technically solid batsman in the middle order while Islamabad, Lahore and Peshawar seems to be quite balanced may be inclusion of some good players in the final teams would change the current analysis.

What this historic city is famous for are the Shalimar garden, world famous Badshahi mosque,the glorious Lahore Fort, grand mausolea of Emperor Jehangir & Queen Noorjehan, Chauburjee Gate, Kamrans baradari, imposing Mahabat khan mosque etc etc - had all been constructed by the mighty Mughals who ruled Hindustan for more than 220 years, with Lahore being their 2nd capital after Delhi. Therefore, No other name sounds suitable and justifiable than something like LAHORE MUGHALS being the most befitting and so relevant by all means. Mughals should be an immense source of pride for Pakistanis and Lahore should be the center of it.

I don't watch cricket but still PSL format got me excited. I wish this is extended to football as well, which we have been arguing from quite sometime now. I grew up in Peshawar, although shifted to Islamabad now since past 5 years, that's why still my heart belongs to Peshawar. I'd be cheering for Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators because of natural connection with Khyber and otherwise neglected province, Balochistan. 'Peshawar Zalmi' is a strong word, 'Quetta Gladiators' looks unoriginal I reckon. Best of luck!

Very disappointed to not see Younis Khan, Sangakara and Said Ajmal in the choices taken by the teams. PSL has already lost a big fan base by not having players from Sri Lanka, NZ and Afghanistan. It has become more like a Pak-West Indies combined domestic league. All 5 franchises MUST have at least one player from emerging nations like Ireland, Afghanistan, UAE, HongKong and Nepal.

Team combination is pathetic as franchise should have picked players from their regions to lift supporters. This is a big flop as talented Karachi players like Fawad Alam, Asad Shafiq and others were not picked. This is not going to fly as far as fan following is concerned.

Lahore Qalanders and Peshawar Zalmi are original names; I am glad they didn't go for the Falcons, Stallions, Royals people keep calling their teams.
At least, they have tried to introduce some element of local culture in their name.
Islamabad United or Quetta Gladiators names are ill-thought - and their logos are horrendous.
Let's hope this league is a success, both financially for the PCB and for the development of emerging talent.
Also, seriously hope that this league is a 'clean' one - as such leagues in India and Bangladesh have had match-fixing scandals engulf them in the past.
Finally, it will be really great to see if this league can ultimately be staged in Pakistan in the future. That will ultimately be its success barometer.
Very saddened to see no top SL player was picked today - disappointing.

Karachi kings have so far got the best bowling options by including M Aamir, Shohel Tanvir, Shakib-al-Hassan; but they have had something missing with the batting solidity. They should have included some batting genius like Sangakaara, M Jayabhardhane of Sri Lanka. Can they do that? Other wise this team is so long so good.

Seems there are many of the PSL officials other than Waqar Younis who also think that Razzaq and Younis are not feasible option for T20 Cricket else may be Waqar Younis is so strong in PCB and uses his influence to block both of them to play PSL. I am waiting for the comments from Anti Waqar lobby. by the way I am a huge fan of both the legendary Younis and Razzaq but also realized and have an opinion that both have played enough of cricket and now should take a side and do not create any unnecessary conspiracy.

PSL - its a Pakistan Super League; so all the franchises and PCB should choose Pakistan Big names in the ICON category and only Pakistani Player should be First Choice Captain of the teams (exceptions may be there). What YK said is very mature thing and everybody should understand why he should play under Watson or Gayle? Its PSL not Big Bash or CPL. I didnt understand why we have watson, Gayle, KP as icons when we players like YK, Misbah, Saeed Ajmal, Irfan, Afridi, Malik, Azhar Ali, this will improve the home player skills and it will groom the young talent as well. Most importantly it is not necessary for the ICON to play all the matches, he is Motivator/ Thinker and Brain behind that Franchise. It is pity that we havent use this opportunity properly; I hope that we can get atleast 2 or 3 proper pinch hitters who can be useful in ODIs after this event.

@shehryar bukhari , what are you talking about? Had he not scored two fifty scores, you could never have won that T20 world cup. Even if you go by the recent domestic T20 tournament, Younis Khan was among the 5 best batsmen. He scored many good scores and that too at strike rates of above 140. It is a shame that some people do see potential in Asad Shafiq as a T20 player but not in the great man Younis. PCB should stop acting like a rogue organization and should learn to respect national greats. Look at India, where Tandulkar, even not being a national T20 player, always fetched the highest price even when his SR was never above 110 and even when he struggled to score. Shame...

Looking at team strength, I believe:
Quetta would win PSL. They have best team selection, many of their players are game changers.
Islamabad is balanced but collectively team is not strong. If Misbah goes into his shell he can make any team lose. Anyhow, they can surprise and to me are second in line to win PSL.
ARY-Lions are collection of good to mediocre all rounders. Jack of all, Deuce of all, but no aces in their initial top 9 players selected. Some of their good all rounders can pull few unexpected victories, but I doubt if they have ability to win PLS (other than fluke).
Lahore team is good for third or fourth place. Bunch of few good hard hitters who can turn odd games from losing to winning position, but I doubt that is enough to win PSL.
Peshawar team is the weakest. It seems, team management believe on ,,, 'lag-giya to chakka nahie tou gulli' type game (Shahid Afridi specialty). One can expect few unexpected 'tukka wins' but overall, nothing special.

The best part of the PSL will be to nurture young talent, as we've never had a finishing school for our domestic players. For them to receive big match and pressure fine tuning in the field and in the middle will be invaluable!
For me the dark horses are Quetta... I would like to see Ajmal get back some form. Its a shame how we treat our former hero's - Asia can be very fickle that way!

@Pakistani what is surprising only 29 international players selected for 20 slots(4each) mandatory slots. I think big bash league gets higher caliber international players. Eventually the best model would be to extend IPL to have 2 teams from Pakistan, 1 from Bangladesh, 1 from sri Lanka and 8 from India. Divide the 12 teams into 2 groups, first group from teams in northern and western part of India and Pakistan. The second group from east and southern part of India and Bangladesh and srilanka. This could be the biggest sport event in the world.

@logic Players are paid less in county and yet they still play. Kohli and all will play anywhere provided they get permission and have less international cricket which takes toll on them.
