ICC suspends Yasir Shah after positive dope test

DUBAI: Pakistan's leg-spinner Yasir Shah was on Sunday provisionally suspended for failing a dope test by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
“Shah has been charged with an anti-doping rule violation on a sample he provided in an in-competition test,” an ICC statement announced.
“The test, conducted on 13 November 2015, was found to contain the presence of chlortalidone, a Prohibited Substance which appears in Section 5 of the World Anti-Doping Agency list (in the category of Specified Substances).”
“In accordance with the ICC Anti-Doping Code, pending the outcome of the disciplinary process, Yasir has been provisionally suspended,” said the ICC.
The 29-year-old has emerged as a match-winner for Pakistan since ace spinner Saeed Ajmal's action was reported and subsequently lost his wicket-taking ability with a remodelled action.
Shah took 12 wickets in Pakistan's 2-0 win against Australia last year before playing a key role in this year's 2-1 Test series win in Sri Lanka with 24 wickets.
A day before he was tested (November 12) Shah had fallen down while bowling in the nets in his follow through and had to miss the first Test against England in Abu Dhabi with a back problem.
He returned for the second and third Tests, taking 15 wickets to help Pakistan beat England 2-0.
Yasir has been the mainstay for Pakistan's bowling line-up in Test matches since his debut in October 2014.
The 29-year-old has 76 Test scalps in 12 Tests for his country and holds the record for being the fastest Pakistani bowler to reach the 50-wicket mark.
The Swabi-born leggie also impressed leg-spin great Shane Warne, who recently declared him as “probably the best leg-spinner in the world”.
The latest doping issue came after Sri Lankan wicketkeeper batsman Kusal Prera tested positive for a banned substance earlier this month.
Prera faces a lengthy ban from international cricket with his B sample understood to have also tested positive.
Perera had to be withdrawn from Sri Lanka's tour to New Zealand after the news came. His test was conducted in October.
Shane Warne also received a one-year-ban after using a banned diuretic in 2003.
Pakistani players who were banned for doping
November 1, 2006
Fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif were banned for two years and one year respectively after both were found guilty of using the banned anabolic steroid nandrolone. Both were absolved by a tribunal because the tests were conducted out of competition.
October 2, 2012
Left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman was banned for 12 weeks by the England and Wales Cricket Board under its anti-doping rules after testing positive for the recreational drug cannabis during his stint with Somerset county.
May 07 - 2014
Kashif Siddiq was banned for two years for violating anti-doping rules.
May 25 - 2015
Pakistan's spinner Raza Hasan banned for two years after failing a dope test in national competition.

There should be a genuine reason why a leg spinner was using a banned diuretic. One should remember that diuretics aren't used for performance enhancement, but if a steroid user adds diuretics to his cycle, then he cannot be tested for steroid use as diuretics act as a masking agent.
Diuretics are easily available in Pakistan as they are used to lower blood pressure, and their use is really common amongst the elderly in Pakistan.
It seems that Yasir Shah possibly self medicated after experiencing high blood pressure. Its the same substance Shane Warne used to look thinner before the 2003 world cup, since diuretics lower blood pressure by aiding in the removal of sodium and potassium, hence loss in water weight. It should be remembered that they do not help in performance enhancement, they have a negative effect on performance and cause cramps and in excess dose strokes are likely.

Chlortalidone can be used in number of cases not even closely linked to enhancing performance. weight loss, high blood pressure or kidney stones can be cases where doctors prescribe chlortalidone. it goes without saying that yasir shah and more so his physician should be careful in prescribing such drugs.

Mohammed Aamir who will prove a real danger for other teams is being over criticized in an effort to somehow keep him away from donning Pakistan's cap. This can come under the clause of inadvertent use, since the diuretic used by Yasir Shah is used around the world to lower blood pressure. It has absolutely no performance enhancing affect - Its not a steroid. It is banned since a person using diuretics can never test positive for anabolic steroids.
The banned substance in question here is sold across all pharmacies in Pakistan, and is perhaps present in all house holds and helps lower blood pressure by eliminating sodium (lowering salt in the patients).
Chances are he self medicated, or perhaps a doctor prescribed him diuretics and a valid prescription can end the suspension.

@Faheem Thats easier said than done. The number of substances banned by WADA are ridiculous and they provide chemical names in the issued list. Even some cough medicines have chemicals that can spike test results. How many of us actually read the chemical composition of the medicine we use?

Every ban seems to be handsomely situated in between major tournaments/series. The team physician should be in question. As a athlete Yasir Shah is no pharmacist and most likely wont be aware of contra ban drugs !! If ICC is surprised by his recovery then a inquiry must be made about the treatment process including the prescribed drugs. It PCB's responsibility to provide an explanation as to why the Medical facility seems so oblivious to such incidents, responsibility to prevent such exposure even if accidental rests with PCB's medical staff. I still think there is more to it that meets the eyes ICC seems to be after priced jewels and Pakistani players are too easy a prey for their vulture eyes.

This chemical, chlortalidone, is used in Blood Pressure medicines to relieve hypertension and stress. It is not a performance-enhancing drug. Since Yasir was injured at the time, this must have been in some of medicine he was taking to recover. The only person to blame is the team doctor/pharmacist who gave the medicines to Yasir. They should have known better about the chemical composition of the medicines.

Chlorthalidone is a diuretic, prescribed for blood pressure and water retention among other indications.
It can be given post corticosteroidal treatment for allergies, swelling due to muscle injury and inflammation. Corticosteroids tend to relieve inflammation and swelling. Water retention is one of the side effects of steroidal use. It seems like ignorance of the prescriber for prescribing it to an athlete if this drug is listed as "dope". It seems the player is innocent as it is not an addictive drug neither is a drug for pleasure.

I must admit this time ICC has got it wrong. I found this decision biased. I am a sports physician. Yasir's urine sample contained presence of chlorthalidone. Chlorthalidone is used by athletes for rapid weight loss. It is only banned in the sports where weight of the athlete plays a significant role. Games such as weight lifting, boxing where athletes are categorized according to their weights , this drug is banned. Cricket has no category of players according to the their weight. Any ban due to the presence of such evidence must be challenged.

Ok lets calm down. The substance taken is not a steroid and not really a performance enhancing drug. Its usually treated for hypertension. There may be a valid reason for him taking it, I doubt he would take such a drug that practically has no impact for performance. It can be used as a diuretic but Shah is not a body builder and there are dozens of drugs that are better that he could have taken. Lets here Shahs side of the story

@Abdullah , Yes the reason it is banned by WADA is that around the 80s, International Doping Agency noticed that urine samples from most athletes (mostly East Germans), were too 'watery' and could not be tested for any hormone use. They figured it was due to diuretic use. Since then diuretics were banned. Lance Armstrong had a team of doctors (Dr.Michele Ferrari ) and scientists who did this for him, East Germans and Russians had their own team of scientists. Its highly unlikely that Yasir Shah is to be blamed for this.

Inadvertent use is a highly unlikely excuse. Diuretics can be used to flush out other drugs from the system. This "masking" effect is what gets them banned in sports.
Yes, diuretics are common antihypertensive drugs, but every sportsman is warned about their use nevertheless, which makes ignorance not a very credible excuse.

These days it is impossible to fake reports. I dont think ICC has faked it, surely Yasir has taken it. Rather than ALWAYS playing victims, its high time we look at our own players who are acting like street players. Why dont they read the rules of Coduct before doing these things? ICC fines Kusal Perera as well so the idea of targetting Pakistan players only does not make sense

Looking at the list almost all diuretics are banned,hope it was prescribed drug. However he should have known about it. Hope if prescribed there is adequate documentation. During my last visit I found you could any drug without any Rx even sedatives and sleeping pills.

Pakistani cicketers are always targetted specially upcomming legands which are later thrown. No steroids or hormone growth. Its only a supplement found in him which is allowed and it can also come from food intakes. Never used to happen like this before. Im shocked Pakistan is still a top Test side. T20 is showing its downfall just like One-days. If your a Pakistani then you will suffer 10x worse punnishment than anyone else.

@D_H No, a valid prescription can not end the suspension. What ever the effect of a drug be, if it is prohibited on WADA's list. Whenever a prohibited drug is necessary to be used due to a condition and is validly prescribed, the player or his board must first inform the ICC in written otherwise it does not make any difference if it is taken with a valid prescription or not.

Agreed. However the player under consideration is a test leg-spinner. Not a fastbowler or a hard hitting batsman. We should remember that anabolic steroids improve strength and speed and don't improve endurance (apart from stanozolol which is debatable).
No drug can make a spinner add more revolutions on the cricket ball. And it obviously doesn't make them more intelligent. Shane Warne used diuretics, which he took from his mother, to lose water weight and look thinner on camera. He knew what he was doing.

ICC must take certain facts into consideration before banning for anti-doping. How come a diuretic taken for most likely water loss, blood pressure or other renal issues.
At the same time I would suggest that PCB needs to get its act straightened or risk its ICC membership if it continues to have players banned for one reason or the other.
PCB is more keen to have syndicate like Mohammad Amir back into the team, I want Rangers or Intelligence to look into the matter of corruption...as to how much money GEO's employees working in PCB are laundering money and if this money is used for terrorism or not?

PCB not only unveils a Convicted felon into its Practice programme But the Chairman Iron fisted the two protesting Players to submitting unconditional support to the Convicted Felon and just few days later , PCB's Star Performing Spin Bowler and included in the ICC year's team , Gets banned for using banned drugs . Its could not have happened at worst than this time . A convicted spot fixing bowler who served a jail term too and some how pardoned by the ICC relax rules,is backed into the national team fold and another Star Bowler is Banned by ICC . Sooner PCB will vouch out to get this Cheat bowler relaxed by ICC and then integrated back into the team PCB . I would not call it team Pakistan because , it is a disgrace to link such felons to the country Pakistan .

Lets put it this way...Yasir Shah was not very effective in the limited overs format (ODI's or T20's) so I hardly think he's going to be missed in limited overs...and with Pakistan due to tour New Zealand, the pitches there will not assist spin bowling...and as far as subcontinent conditions are concerned, Imad Wasim has done exceptionally well with both his batting and spin bowling....But we will miss him in the test format where he has single handedly helped Pakistan win matches and rise up the rankings to as high as no.2.
It now makes the selectors job even more easier to pick Mohammad Aamir for the New Zealand tour. Our pace bowling resources look pretty good. With Aamir, Wahab Riaz, Irfan, Junaid, Imran Khan, Rahat Ali and if you add Gul to that list since he's still around and only 31 years of age..
But I feel sorry for Yasir, it's not as if he took performace enhancing drugs...He should be let off for that !!!

When ajmal was banned , most of the comment read India is behind his ban, he should not be tested in India but here at least they don't blame India . But they find conspiracy theory again against icc. Why not people ask pcb these questions?? What was medical board of pcb was doing?? All players knows very well that which drugs are banned for players and every possible precautions are taken before prescribing any drug to players. This seems not to be accidental. @truth in head to head competition still this below average team is ahead of team India which is earning 80% cricket money. With money you can control ICC but cannot buy talent. Earning of BCCI is much more than other countries because population of India is much more than the combined population of all other cricket playing countries. If you don't play home series for 5 years you will be at the bottom of the table. After each home series India jumps to second place in rating and all the spinners jump in ranking. One away series bring you back to earth. Now "Katchra" wickets are ready for T-20 world cup.

It is painful to see conspiracy theories pop up blaming India, BCCI and Big 3 even on this incident. Shane Warne was banned for 1 year using a diuretic right before 2003 world cup and ended up missing it. No one had said at that time that it was a conspiracy by ECB as they were dominant in ICC. Please understand that Chlortalidone is a diuretic that can mask effect of another performance enhancing drug like Nandrolone. Chlortalidone itself is not a performance enhancing drug. It helps in getting rid of water from the body so players can drop their weight little bit. Along with that it also gets rid of sodium and potassium. It has been banned for years. It is not only a failure on part of the player but also on the part of the PCB that they have not been able to implement strict policy in this regards. This is ICC who is testing a player and finding him of wrongdoing. Kusal Parera was found guilty as well and now faces a ban. Is that a conspiracy also?

@Qasim Chlorthalidone has been included in a banned substance for years by anti-doping agencies. It is a well known fact that it is a diuretic and used to treat hypertension. So you don't need to educate us and everyone on ICC panel regarding this. Diuretics are considered masking agents due to the dilution of the urine, which results in lower levels of the banned substance being excreted from the body. So if you are taking anabolic steroids like Nandrolone (which is a performance enhancing drug), you can effectively mask its levels in the urine by taking diuretics like chlorthalidone. Chlorthalidone can dilute the urine and can mask Nandrolone. This is the reason diuretics are banned by the anti-doping agencies. Also, diuretics in sports can be used to regulate body mass (box, weight lifting, etc.) and to shape muscle profile (body building). There is a good reason why all the anti-doping agencies have banned it. Stop thinking about conspiracy in everything.

One question to ask of PCB, is there a medical panel that overseas and guides medical care of all players under contract. If the answer is no, then why not??? Could this be yet another sign of PCB incompetence. Yasir Shah is a match winning cricketer and an asset for Pakistan cricket. Assets need to be protected and PCB is has done an awful job of protecting them.

They were waiting to get him injured,then when he gets medical treatment for his injury,he is asked to go for dope test after having medicine.Something doesn't sound right,looks like pre planned drama.Why waiting for player to get injured and when he is undergoing treatment he is put under dope test.How a player will know when it is responsibility of doctor what it needs to be given? Something doesn't seems right anyway.There are too many coincidences and too many if's and but.

He is young and an athlete. The chances of having him used this drug for medical reasons such as high BP is very low as he is extremity unlikely to have high BP problem. Plus, the player has to declare it before getting tested for drugs and the medication(s) has to be prescribed by a physician.
Very disappointing to hear about this news but he has to serve his time. Bye Bye Yasir Shah.

I think it's a big conspiracy against Pakistan, Shane Warne Visited the England training session this year during Pakistan and England tour and after one week ICC determined to take the test for Yasir Shah. Something smells fishy here. Shane advised him few tips during the session. I'm not sure about this drug and how long it takes you to get Positive may be he just started taking it.
