2nd T20: Guptill-Williamson break world record in New Zealand's win

HAMILTON: Skipper Kane Williamson and fellow opener Martin Guptill forged the highest partnership in Twenty20 Internationals to secure New Zealand a series-levelling 10-wicket victory against Pakistan in the second match in Hamilton on Sunday.
The 171-run stand between the pair bettered the previous record of 170 between South African openers Graeme Smith and Loots Bosman against England in a 2009 match at Centurion.
Williamson remained unbeaten after a 48-ball 72, while Guptill faced 10 more balls for his 87 not out as the Kiwis sealed victory with 14 balls to spare.

Earlier, a 63-run blast in 34 balls by Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik lifted Pakistan to 168 for 7.
Shahid Afridi's side had a pedestrian start after they won the toss and elected to bat, with the first 10 overs producing 60 runs.
But when Malik and Akmal lashed out, the pace increased considerably with 108 scored off the second half of the innings.
Akmal was unbeaten on 56 off 27 deliveries at the close while Malik made 39 off 30.
New Zealand, with an eye on the World Twenty20 in India in March, experimented with left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner opening the bowling while new-ball spearheads Trent Boult and Matt Henry sat out the match.
It was a switch which suited Pakistan opener Mohammad Hafeez who took 10 off the first over with a six and a four.
Santner was immediately removed from the attack with Corey Anderson and Adam Milne tasked with putting the brakes on the scoring.
Anderson claimed the wicket of Ahmed Shehzad for nine in his second over and when Santner was brought back in the seventh over he exacted revenge on Hafeez by having the opener caught at deep midwicket for 19.
Despite the first over, Pakistan were 67 for 3 when Grant Elliott claimed Sohaib Maqsood (18) at the start of the 12th over.
It signalled Malik and Akmal to lift the tempo. After 15 overs Pakistan were 116 for 3 and in the last five overs they added another 52.
Mitchell McClenaghan had the best bowling figures for New Zealand with two for 23.

I said it before don't expect too much from amir ..yes he did picked wickets in bpl and domestic cricket but its international cricket so give him time and I hope someone like Sarah here will understand this and stop harping about amir by portraying him as a legend already.. And Pakistan should drop shahzad and maqsood from both t20 and odi forever asap ..both useless ...pick mukhtar Ahmad or semi Aslam instead of shahzad and rizwan in place of maqsood...

Pakistan team needs some changes in Twenty squad like Hafeez and Maqsood should be excluded and Sharjeel khan should be included. In first match, it was observed that some players deliberatly not supporting Aamir on the ground by dropping catches and let ball for boundaries. Thats why our so called national team was humiliated today.

I keep repeating this fact time and again but Ahmed Shehzad is not an international player of any sort. I cannot understand why this person is allowed to play Cricket for jis country as this insulting ordinary players far better and talented. Pakistan have no idea how to play as a team or what is Plan B C or D. They always rely on luck, a basic game plan, rely on their emotions and take credit for just doing a normal job each time they win. They are not exceeding in their potential but Cricket is not all about brawn.

Ours is a very pessimist team and playing strategy. We start every match - regardless of losing or not losing wickets - with a target of 60 runs in first 10 overs. We lose all matches in our first 10 overs.

I cannot understand Sohaib Maqssod playing and being sent in at No3 - why in Gods name do we not have Akmal and Afridi up the order? Shahzad has also had his chances and needs to rest. I am not an expert on cricket but I reapetedly mention in earlier matches that Ahmed Shehzad is good for nothing. May be he made good score in past but he is very weak in fielding also.
Secondly, Shoaib Maqsood also seems to be hopeless and Karahi boy Safdar who is failure so far.
Afridi should have given balling attack to Shoib Malik to save some runs.

OMG, Calm down guys. They lost a match so what. Look at their clean hitting. They were hitting good length balls. It's not easy to ball at someone who can hit a good length ball. And don't forget it's their home ground and short boundaries. And also 2 of their players hold a record of scoring a fastest 50. We response to losing like kids do. Sometimes you need to appreciate the opposition and instead of blaming bowling, look at your top order batting. Sohaib Maqsood has to go and Gul should be replaced with Anwar Ali.

In his first game there were 2 drop catches of his bowling Its only his 2nd game since he has made a comeback give the lad a chance for god sake whats wrong with some people here? Hopefully the Amir hoopalah will die down now as he is not the same bowler he used to be he bowls well beyond the popping crease and is bowling from 25 yards back he has lost the pace zip and swing he used to have no one can surrvive the pressure he is under he is terrified of noballing thus is bowling from so far back thus is unable to put 100% into each deliveries the PCB hierarchy is to blame for destroying his career he should have been gradually eased into the team after seeing a competent sports psychologist and also a competent bowling coach like Wasim Akram so his run up could be fixed there is still time to do this

Amir needs a competent bowling coach and a sports psychologist to save his career Wasim Akram is the best man to save Amir's career as he is a bowling great and also was married to a sports psychologist and has verifiable experience in this field as well this is what should be done instead of rushing and destroying the career of a bowler who has the potential of being one of the greats

To all these "win a match you are hero and loose a match your zero" sunshine fans. This is only the second match. NZ is not Zimbabwe in their own backyard. It was expected of them to bounce back strong. Good thing is that batsmen are putting up 160+ score. Bowlers need to get their line right. Expect Pakistan to bounce back in the 3rd match.

There was no way Pak could have defended any total less than 200 on this ground.
I have no clue why Maqsood is in team. What is the point of keeping your best palyers like Akmal and Malik with less overs to play.

Nz is batters paradise and ballers nightmare. Only way to put pressure on kiwis in nz that openers score big and save wickets, only way aus. Try to play them. Anyway good luck in next match. Amir cannot be proven by one match or even by one series. Pcb want to spend no money on fast ballers, that's the reason they made big hype of any ballers, Yasir,anwar,younis, irfan,even Wahab are the examples. Pace bowlers don't come out of dirt like pcb is trying to make people believe. It takes lot of money and time which seems to be in short for pcb. That's the reason they want to prolong the players stretch their carrier as long and make their egos so large they have no choice but to play through injuries, do bad bowling actions,do drugs or whatever to stay relevant.

Mr.this is a team game .In T20 any bowler can be hit any time.What happened to Bolt and Henry in last match,they are NZ''s pace spearhead and were playing at their home.
Your batsmen couldn't score enough,it was more than 200 runs wicket.

Amir will improve Ishaallah,he has just resumed international cricket-there is a big difference in domestic and international cricket.

I am surprised that Maqsood was picked ahead of Rizwan, who is also a better fielder. Additionally, Gul is not even a shade of his old self, why not pick Arshad Ali - who is good all rounder and is in form.

Was. It's T20 highly electrifying that is exact the reason some of my friends in journalist field are against this format with is hugely popular in the world.
It does not shows the class of a batsman likes of great Zaheer,Javed,Majid,Ian,Greg,B.Richards,Gavaskar,Sachin,Gorden G, & Jeffery B. I have never doubt about Umer Akmal talent but been mis treated by coach seen first hand.Been expiernce around the globe to see the treatment hurts me to talk ,wasted talent of Razzaq and others just for the Ego sake and attitude results lost of Pakistan and fans around world.

See this is what Afridi eleven is. The team had won first match by chance as I stated earlier and some Afridi's ridiculous fan trumped as if Afridi had done something great. In fact, the green shirts boys play by luck and win by chance, otherwise they have no professionalism and keen to fight by their heart.

Give Amir a break. The haters are out with knives with one poor performance, but they were hiding when Amer nailed K Williamson twice in the first t20. On NZ giving the match on platter to Pak, all I can do is laugh.
Cricket is not played in grounds with one boundary at 50 meters. For touring teams, one match will fly by adjusting to that fact before they even know. The bowlers changed their length because they were wary of the fact that any mush it can an easy six. Amir is clearly under pressure as players within the team are against him.

I don't understand why it has become fashionable to blame Afridi for every loss. We lost due to poor performance by top order especially Sohaib. 60 runs in 10 years is unacceptable in T20 format. Why we expect miracles from Afridi that every time, he will score at 200+ strike rate.

After reading most of the comments I am very much surprised that none has raised any voice against Shahid Afridi who is to be blamed the most but regretfully he has been spared and others have been attacked and abused instead. I corroborate my statement by saying that in the 1st instance Shahid being the captain must be the role model for his fellow players. Today his performance was not only bad but disastrous resulting in such truly humiliating defeat. He faced just 3 balls and scored only 7 runs and back to pavilion. Is this what was expected of the captain at the time when we needed him the most? In bowling he was equally worst and gifted,not gave,38 runs in his allotted 4 overs proves that he utterly failed on both counts. Now I show him mirror. Imad is much junior player but yet he scored 8 runs and gave away 32 runs in his allotted 4 overs proving that he has slapped on both cheeks of his captain who be punished I wish. Batting is the main issue, talent should be identified and then given proper opportunities and grooming instead of random changes, randomness has hurt Pakistan cricket more than anything else. Honest and dedicated professionals must be appointed rather than on political basis.

I don't have an opinion on Shoaib Maqsood's batting because I have yet to see him play a decent innings. Fortunately, I have seen Amir in his heydays and I am quite confident he can come out of this mess hehe. Unlike Shoaib Maqsood, Amir just needs time.

place in the world cup. Then the Akmal who played well in 2nd T20, just well enough to steer him through for another 6 months or so and now selfy boy shahzad he needs one cameo to stay in the team. Professor has also delivered in 1st Match so he is also in comfort Zone. This is the real face of Pak Cricket which lacks consistency. This culture has to change but our heirarchy is busy in cosmetic change there is no long term planning involved.... RIP Pak Cricket

The weak Pakistani batting exposed yet again and unless Selectors/ Coach are willing to axe batsmen inconsistent with batting particularly opening pair Maqsood and Shezad, its supporters will continue to be disappointed. Both failed in the opener too despite Pakistan registered a win to some superb bowling. Pakistan should follow basics of selection 'law of averages' of all batsman spread over 5 recent matches so a player will fight for his place and not take it for granted.

Also, it seems like the team is trying control Amir. You don't need to control him instead you need to unleash him. A fast bowler without passion and agression is like a armless warrior.

Our claim to have the best bowling side failure has led to this world record. What a Shame! We still have mediocre and game spoilers in the team from batting to bowling. Also if we analysis the role of Wicket Keeper in T20, with hardly any dot balls taking place (as this match transpired), we need solid wicketkeeper batsman. Sarfaraz looks out of form and he provides space for the return of Kamran Akmal.

This is not the first world record with Pakistan's name.
Others are:
Kamran Akmal : largest number of straight forward catches dropped as a wicket keeper.
( a cruel joke as some people still want him back in the team!)
Waqar Younis: the only coach ever in cricket world's history who has not been fired after presiding over a string of defeats after defeats and still retaining his job. Some cynics cannot be faulted for saying that Waqar is there to make sure we do not break this streak of losing games and championships.
Team selection: We also hold the distinction of being the only cricketing nation in the world that selects or bars players for belonging to different areas of one country.The pride of winning and the national interest can go to hell as long as the team selection mafia can gets its favorites in the team.

@Shahid - India is Number 1 if only on Paper! Eng have potential but also lots of flaws like most of the others. When judging any team, it has be when at full strength. This is why stats normally don't lie.
England have yet to conquer the subcontinent fully before being classed as the best, right now - all the teams are beating each other @home.
The best spin attack will win the T20 WC..
