World T20: Pakistan in talks with Viv Richards for coaching role

The sight of Sir Vivian Richard celebrating Quetta Gladiators' success has perhaps been the highlight of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for many cricket followers.

But Pakistan fans may be in for a bigger treat after a cricket board official revealed that efforts to get the 'King' on the national team in a coaching role were underway ahead of the World Twenty20 in March.

“We are in talks with Sir Viv Richards to take on the role of batting consultant for the World Twenty20,” a PCB official told Dawn on the condition of anonymity.

According to the official, Richards' commitments as a television expert will not allow him to take on a bigger role.

Richards, who is the team mentor of the Gladiators side, had earlier expressed his desire to work with the Pakistan team and said he wouldn't turn down an offer from the team.

“Waqar Younis at present is doing a great job with the Pakistan team, but if given an opportunity to take up a coaching assignment with Pakistan cricket, I would definitely give it a shot as I believe I have a lot to offer to the game,” Richards was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

During his glittering career, Richards played 121 Tests amassing 8,540 runs with a staggering average of 50.23 scoring 24 centuries and 45 half-centuries.

He was well ahead of the time and played at a brisk strike-rate even in that era as he accumulated 6,721 runs in 187 One-day Internationals at an average of 47 with a fantastic strike-rate of 90.20. The right-handed batsman scored 11 centuries and 45 fifties in ODIs and is still regarded as one of the most fearsome batsmen of all-time.
