LAHORE: The Pakistan People’s Party on Wednesday submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly demanding the federal government should give extension to army chief Gen Raheel Sharif.
PPP MPA Khurram Wattoo filed the resolution in the assembly secretariat, saying the country was facing worst situation and the armed forces were trying their best to root out the menace of terrorism.
Under these circumstances, he said, the government should rise above the politics of expediency and back the armed forces in war on terror.
The resolution said the announcement by Gen Raheel that he didn’t want extension in his tenure was commendable but “this house asks the federal government to give him (Gen Raheel) extension in his service” in national interest.
The PPP resolution came a day after the party’s co-chairman and former president Asif Ali Zardari termed the decision of Gen Raheel to not seek extension ‘premature’. It stressed the need for continuity of the military leadership as the country was passing through a “difficult phase”.

One can expect any such thing from the so called leadership of PPP, they have no clue how/should the institutions work. Also, such petty baits to please around are much exposed to everyone; army must be knowing them v well.
No one knew before his appointment as COAS that how would he perform and address the true concerns of the general public; he did extremely well, so let's not bother about the issue of his successor that too pre-maturely. Anyone succeeding him will maintain his performance bar if he couldn't raise that further. Let's believe in institutions than banking on individuals.
Gen Raheel would always be respected for his good deeds and selfless contributions.

I think a competition has started in Pakistan by certain individuals ,groups,political parties etc for buttering General Raheel Sharief by seeking his extension as COAS in some or the other way.Actually,these persons want to encash his popularity amongst the Pakistanis or out of fear for punishment on account of their misdeeds.In my opinion,after retirement General Sharief will join hands with the honest and dedicated Imran Khan and they together will sweep next general elections.General Sharief as president and Imran Khan as prime minister ,will drive the Pakistan to the new heights and the period will be golden era for Pakistan.

If the intention is right, PPP should submit the resolution in Sind Assembly as well where there is no chance that it will not be passed! But the intent here is highly questionable.

Requesting the extension of the current chief, now or in the past, it means that we have no confidence in the new corp of leaders. If this is the case, it is pretty dangerous situation.

Much as I appreciate General Sharif's role in fighting terror and clear leadership, I find it strange that people calling for an extension in office seem to have no trust in the very institution that he leads and think the person is more important than the merit and succession planning.

Pakistan Army is a great institutions but producing another Raheel Sharif is a very tall order. However, we don't have to have another Raheel Sharif, one Raheel Sharif every 20 years is enough to keep a nation going just as one Allama Iqbal every 200 years is enough to keep a nation going.

Political parties or Provincial and for the sake arguments National Assembly has nothing to do with extention.in.the tenure of COAS. Peoples Party playing politics by tabling a resolution, a game and dirty politics to avoid accountability and corruption charges
They must respect institution instead of a person.
