ISLAMABAD: Six Pakistan institutes of higher education are ranked among the world's top 800 universities by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a British ranking agency.
The Pakistani varsities that made it to the QS World University Rankings 2015-2016 include the National University of Sciences And Technology (Nust) Islamabad, Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Lahore University of Management Sciences (Lums), University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore, University of Karachi (KU) and the University of Lahore. Nust was also ranked separately at 340 in the 'Engineering and Technology' category.
The QS rankings take into account academic reputation (40 per cent), employer reputation (10pc), student to faculty ratio (20pc), citations per faculty (20pc), international faculty ratio (5pc) and international students (5pc). The methodology aims to assess research, teaching, employability and internationalisation.

Lums: 701+
UET Lahore: 701+
KU: 701+
University of Lahore: 701+
The top 10 universities in the world, according to the QS rankings are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Cambridge University, Stanford University, California Institute of Technology, University of Oxford, University College London, Imperial College, ETH Zurich and the University of Chicago.

We need to improve standard of higher education so that ranking of Pakistani universities comes much higher than the 501-550 category. Pakistan is one of the most populous countries with hard working people. There is enough potential to do better but some discipline in the society is lacking.

The main thing is that you must have to spend money in education as much as you can. The more you spend in research institution the you will get reward.
even our top institutes lack basics research facilities.
I some time think, but in vain, that may there could be some way to divert our elders mind from unwanted works of making roads and Oranges and Metros to this unique special sector of Education.

It is time for Pakistan to compare their level of Education with India and hope to beat India in this field instead of striving to outdo their Eastern neighbor and arch rival in warfare. 2 Universities of India have made it to the to 200 list this year. We hope to see Pakistan compete successfully next time. :)

Pakistan is far behind in university ranking. Being so populated country we shud have atleast one university in top 200 at minimum. I think education is the best medium term project on which we need to invest to fight poverty and extremism in this country.

It is nothing but a shame reading this news. Had the so called democratic governments stayed on course with Mush era initiatives under the supervision of Dr. Ata, we surely now had at least 5 universities ranking among the to 500. But for some it does not matter. They would rather build roads, metroes and have yellow taxies to their name.

In Dubai there is huge hype of LUMS and lot of companies are interested to attract graduates from LUMS but they aren't many available in UAE. But I am surprised that LUMS is behind all the rest in Pakistan and ranked 700+. It seems there is something wrong in rankings. Also another great university is Aga Khan which is highly regarded in GCC but it is not even in world ranking same is the case with IBA!

Funny enough that with my marks I wasn't able to get admission in either NUST or UET but got admission in a Uni which is within 100 top universities list.
Our education system is complete failure, we need to revamp it, it is the only thing which will help us in future.

In my view, this is a great news. In 2006, I searched for Pakistani universities in top-ranked ones. LUMS was the only one, standing at 2800 something at that time. We should not ignore the fact that this is a world-wide ranking. Well done the faculty members of NUST, QAU, LUMS, UET Lahore, KU, UoL.

This ranking is not reliable. It is based on western parameters and they have placed most of western universities over the top of many top notched Asian universities (in Singapore, Japan, China and India)....so it is not so reliable.

The initial PURPOSE of a higher education institution is so that its students LEARN, which means teachers must know how to teach what they teach. Research is secondary. Yet in most ranking research is over-weighted; that can happen later, much later, after the education-teaching-learning part is 'successful'.

Did you know that a degree from any Pakistani university is not given the full credit in any university in United States,you have to go to school for more hours or credits.A Masters degree from Pakistan is the same as a Bachelors.That tells you that our standards of education are way below the standards of the world.This is where our governments need to invest,in education,teachers,labs,technology,research and so on.It only prepares our students for a better tomorrow.We need qualified math and science teachers,but when most your politicians hold fake degrees,they will never understand the importance of education,investing in education means better education for coming generation,better jobs,more opportunities,better economy.But hey,metro buses and motorways serves a much more meaningful purpose,it gives the political parties bragging rights,which is more important than education.

There is room for our institutes of higher learning to improve qualitatively by introducing modern teaching methodologies and techniques matching international standards. It means our Education system running on old and obsolete lines should be overhauled to meet the requirements of the 21st century. It is the research oriented approach that produces quality professionals capable of standing at par with those in the developed countries. The value of knowledge lies in its application to serve humanity in different domains of science and technology, art and literature and other fields of human sciences. Education refines societies equipping them with high moral and ethical traits. The government should not hesitate in allocating the required budget for promoting education in order to create a society befitting Pakistan.

@Shahid Agree, under Musharraf and Dr Ata, education was rightly given much greater priority over day to day conveniences such as roads and metro buses. But when you have businessmen/politicians at the helm, all they think about is making money today and getting votes in the next elections. Their thinking does not go beyond five years.

Well done Pakistan- 6 educational establishment is still an achievement out of 800 from the entire world. This is people's effort minus government helping hand. But we need more attention towards universities as well. Look at Karachi Grammar school Karachi, ranked one of the best in the world. It produces A+ students and highest mark record breakers in all subjects, as if it was routine stuff.

@Yousuf , Sir pl look at the world universities ranking used by a Chinese University. It is called "Shanghai Ranking". This is used by most of the world. In its 2015 ranking 9 out of first 10 are from USA and one is from UK. The first best Chinese ranking starts at
# 101. Chinese are smart and very realistic. They could have given a higher ranking to their own universities. But this way they get a real picture and improve themselves.

In one sense we should be proud, our entire education budget is $750 million, whilst MITs annual budget is $3.2 billion, so six in the top 800 is a great achievement.
The fact all education comes from this budget and 48% of the population is illiterate, should cause shame to us all.

These rankings are very subjective. Being involved in academia in Pakistan and abroad, I can say for a fact that recently the education standard at Pakistani universities (at least engineering universities) has improved significantly. It was pathetic when I graduated. But they still have a long way to go before they can even come close to the universities in the West.

Good job. Those are good rankings but I think a nation with 1.2 billion should have more ranked in top. And then ranked in 200th or 300th is not the best for top Indian institutes. Similarly, around 400th or 500th does not look good for Pak either.

Change the criteria and the ranking too will undergo a change. one criteria is the income to the University from the industry. This is well an important factor and extension of the outcome of research done in the universities and its application in the industries or the business world. These are main constraints for better scoring in the ranking.
