WASHINGTON: Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has said that Indian students can stay in the United States as they are 'smart people' and the US needs them, reported Hindustan Times on Tuesday.
“We educate a lot of people, very smart people. We need those people in the country,” Trump told Fox News in an interview.

Trump, who has openly called for a temporary ban on Muslim immigration in US, was of the view that Indian students come and get themselves enrolled in institutions like Harvard, study and then go back to India where they set-up companies and 'employ lots of people'.
Regarding Indians who have US H1B visas, he said that many of them want to stay in US.
The US H1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise in specialised fields such as architecture, engineering, mathematics, science, and medicine.
Trump, during his campaign for White House, has repeatedly criticised the H1-B visa program maintaining that it has taken away jobs from American workers.

Indian students get the self enrolled in many other institutions other than Harvard , MIT or prestigious places. These places are Oliver loaded with applications from USA alone and can not accommodate all. Again, fees in these places are prohibitive and dis courage student entry. There are many top class institutions in the country.

I a Pakistani can vouch that this is so true what Trump has said. You can literally see this in every aspect of life here in US whether it is tech jobs or non tech jobs particularly in hospital jobs. One Indian is a governor. The well known CNN Dr. Sanjay is a health advisor. And now an Indian Sri Srinivasan, is a candidate for the Supreme Court justice and there are many many others. Of course here I do not mean to degrade my fellow country men. They are smart too but have not been able to make inroads to top level.

So even Muslims (who are students from India) will be welcome here? Some clarification is needed here to get it straight. His dubious talk will never end, it seems. This is all a gimmick to 'snatch' the votes of NRIs even though they might be in favor of the Democratic regime which is clearly pro-India in many ways. Well, one should not really pay much attention to this 'bigot' who has overlooked the contributions of the Muslims in general over the past four or five decades to the US economy as well as the social fabric with the majority of them dedicatedly applying themselves to the general welfare of the US.

How can anyone agree with Drumpf? Let's say it suits you so you don't care if it affects other nationalities. And as for Mr. Drumpf does he know that India has the second largest Muslim population right now. And it will overtake Indonesia by 2025 for Muslim population?

In US north Indians like Punjabis and Gujaratis get along very well with Pakistanis but they don't get along very well with Southerners like Tamils and Telugu (sundar pichai, Indra Nooyi, Srini srinivasan , Satya nadella are basically Tamils). They deliberately speak in Hindi with us. I have seen northies inviting Pakistanis home for dinner so often but rarely any southies. Sometimes I feel the partition was done on wrong side of the border.

This is true with most nations like Indians (in general with some exceptions) as they are good for local economy, bring in stability and are most peaceful (when outside India). who would have problem with them when they bring in so much wealth and stability ?

I beg to differ from Trump's statement. I think they are hard working and help each other ( seen that in my 15 year consultancy career in US). Some of them are smart but not all , other immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and other parts of the world are also very. Smart and talented but since they dont come in as many numbers like the Indians ( thanks to tata,infy,cognizant)....

People are jumping to conclusions. The US has retained its technological edge by attracting the brightest students and retaining them there, more so in Science and Engineering streams. Trump well knows that many Indian origin students have contributed immensely by living the American dream.
When Trump says Indians, he does not indulge in any religious, ethnic, casteist or language discrimination. Whatever ones background may be, if you originate from India you are Indian. Indian expatriates have done a wonderful job wherever they have gone, winning laurels and goodwill. Makes it much easier for those wishing to follow in their footsteps.

I live abroad and I see lots of Indians and I agree Indians are the smartest people. They are successful in science, technology and entrepreneurship. We were part of the same breed. But our diversion away from that smartness has affected our thinking. We must collaborate with Indians to get some of their shine on to us.

@Hasan That does not need any proof . Indian is highest earning community in USA with and average income of 105000 USD almost double than White Americans and much ahead than any other community. Indian make 13% of total graduate from US universities against only 1% of total population. Many big companies have Indian CEO .
and above all Indian community gets mixed with local much better than their counterpart.

This is a realistic statement from Mr. Trump about Indian students. Indian students' in view of their simplicity, sincerity and dedication with the cause of education are one of the best in USA and every where they go. As in democracy it is not the higher values but the higher numbers of voters matters. Who so over is elected as next President of USA the Muslims will equally respect and welcome the mandate of majority.

There is no doubt that Indian students in USA and abroad are the best of all in their sincerity for the pursuit of knowledge. Nevertheless Mr. Trumps statement about banning all the Muslims is incomprehensible because in every religious community there are the worst and the best people. All major religions including Christianity believe that there is Only One Creator God of all mankind. That One Creator has never ever given the pre-option to any single human soul of the earth planet to pick or chose his/her religion before coming into the womb of mother. When no one is born into any religion with own choice but only with exclusive judgment of the same One Creator of all, why any human should be hated or discriminated for his/her religios origin? If Mr. Trump been sent into any Muslim parents by the same One Creator of all mankind would he have any choice to tell God that, " sorry I do not want to be born into Muslims"? In that case what been his feelings on total Muslims ban?

Let me know if you live in USA how to contact you so you can see yourself. There are also times when south Indian have separate parties and North Indians and Pakistanis dine together just because of common language and food.

Trump although appreciative in his words is a danger to civil rights, if he goes on to the White House and implements what he is trumpeting (unlikely though as geopolitical considerations will kick in). I wud take his words with a pinch of salt as action speaks louder. Its quite sad to hear the current level of debates in the ongoing primaries.

@idea Students form Indians continents are all smart whether Indian, Pakistani Bangaladeshi or Srilankan. Its due to the DNA inherited by these people from ages. This Continent was one long back, only its divided in small parts later on as few countries. I stay in gulf and see all these nationalities are equally smart. Its because our forefathers (Wise and learned Rishis especially) have developed these characteristics in the people. Jai Hind.

If you look at Indian businessmen like Azim Hasham Premji, the chairman of Wipro, they have large numbers of Americans on their rolls.

Indians who go study in the US in good universities are the cream and they end up working there or even become entrepreneurs who generate jobs for Americans. Serial entrepreneur B.V.Jagadish who pioneered the server farms with his company Exodus in the early days of dot com, Sabeer Bhatia who invented web mail with Hotmail, Vinod Khosla who started Sun Microsystems and later the VC company Kleiner Perkins and Pramod Haque of Norwest Partners are a few examples. Then you have professionals like Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, Indra Nooyi, the CEO of Pepsi, Sundar Pichai of Google and many more. So Trump does have a point.
