‘Serious mess’: Pakistan need to dig deep to find heroes, says Waqar Younis

“We don’t need stars, we need heroes,” Pakistan head coach Waqar Younis said outside the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore as he headed to a ‘fact-finding meeting’ called up by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) after the national side’s disastrous exit from the World Twent20.
Waqar’s squad included the likes of Ahmed Shehzad, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik and skipper Shahid Afridi.
The four players are the 'stars' in Pakistan's current line up but it wasn't clear who Waqar was pointing at in his statement amid rumours of factions within the team.
“Pakistan cricket is facing numerous problems at present and many of those can’t be spoken about in public,” Waqar told reporters.
“If those problems are disclosed in front of the people, it will bring a bad name to Pakistan. It’ll be better to discuss it all in the PCB boardroom.”
The 44-year-old former captain said Pakistan's decline on the international stage had left him deeply 'hurt'.
“I’ve been very hurt by the situation [that has surrounded Pakistan cricket] and my comments in recent press conferences show it. I apologise to the nation and if my leaving makes things better, then I would do it without delay.”
“But we need to dig deep to recognise and find heroes.”
Sharjeel Khan was Pakistan’s highest run-scorer with 112 runs in 4 matches while Shehzad, who was recalled to the team at the last minute, scored up 108 runs in as many World T20 outings.
Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi and veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik scored less than 100 runs in 4 matches and failed to take responsibility when the side needed it. 'Boom Boom' was off colour with the ball as well as his side failed to make their presence felt at the world event and crashed out in the group stage.
PCB's fact-finding committee convenes in Lahore from Tuesday for a three-day period but it has been learnt that Waqar submitted a 'damning' report on the team's World T20 performance on Monday.
The committee, which includes Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq and senior batsman Younis Khan, has been given the mandate by the board to meet and talk to the captain, coach, manager and senior players of the national team.

Very right. I agree with the coach. There is always some percentage shared by everyone in the Team either the Team Win or lost. Before identifying the root cause of failure the changes in some key positions is meaningless. There is a thorough analysis needed before any action. I don't think this fact finding committee is competent enough to find the root cause of failure may be some ex-cricketers with out any biases against the current PCB setup, Team management and Players should investigate this matter. Just to avoid biases Keep Sarfaraz Nawaz, Amir Sohail, Mohsin Khan, Rashid Latif, Wasim Akram, Moin Khan, Javed Miandad, Muhammad Yousuf, Shoaib Akhtar and all other TV experts away from this committee and try to find the right guys. May be Inizimam, Sadiq Muhammad, Majid Khan, Iqbal Qasim are best suitable for it.

Situation of a country reflects in each and every thing. Pakistan's current situation is not good. There is terrorism and economy is also not good. No team in world is willing to come pakistan. And if financially you are good then you have to invest in cricket. Pakistan's priority at this time should be security. If people will remain safe then they will think about playing cricket.

Mr. Waqar Younis you are part of this problem. Imran Khan has to be involved in cricket Pakistan. Any solution without Imran Khan involvement will not be acceptable. How is Misbah and Younis Khan going to help? They have conflict of interests.

PCB position holders are responsible for all this mess not the players. Unfortunately due to incompetent people being selected for political gains the whole department is suffering. The incompetency is evident from the PM to the bottom of our institutions, but it seems nobody cares.

We need to establish who is hero. If it is one who performs once in a blue moon or most of time! For some time made wrong example to follow for youngsters, everyone wants to be Afridi. He is good to have in team but not on the cost of cricketing generations everyone of which now wants to be Afridi.
On another note, it is not only players. It is worst management named PCB.

We have a serious problem with our batting and we have a bowling coach. Our batting coach had a bad career. Why not bring inzamam and misbah as coach?
Plus mismanagement pcb should have national tournaments every year and choose the best why can't we have a proper competition and pay decent money and do like lahore peshawar karachi islamabad Quetta but no ...
Make the most out of it. Bring new blood into the team make a young captain like Imad wasim.
Problems in roots can be fixed if someone knows how to get to the roots. Instead of saying we have problems say we have a solution.

Easy to comment on other's performance but very hard to put yourself through the same lens. He should be the first one resigning from his post. He is a coach and a very important part of the team so if the team fails as a leader take responsibility and get someone more capable to do it. Unfortunately we all just love to blame others but dont have the guts to accept responsibility of own failures.

Thats again wrong thinking. If pakistan keeps on thinking that one day a hero will save them, they will keep in investing people like Shahid Afridi/ Wahab Riaz etc. It's team game, They should identify the talented 20 guys and keep on investing and training them. Give them years to mature. No Sachin or Virat Kohli was born hero, they all grown up to the level with constant hardwork and opportunities. I only mentioned batsmen because Pakistan bowling is better than India, only a class spinner is missing though.

In my opinion, The only and only factor of this failure is the irresponsible attitude of the key players including Ahmed Shahzad, Umer Akmal even Shoaib Malik and Afridi himself were not impressive at all while professor must have taken the benefit of being injured. The team needs a psychiatrist who could work on these guys and make them mentally strong. Unable to act or decide at the right time is the biggest weak point of this team. Major responsibility though lies over captain who has to take the right decision on right time and implement the strategy given by Team management. Anyway here I go with Waqar Younis to dig out the real facts though he must include himself responsible for such performances by his team.

So Shoaib Malik is defined as a star in the mainstream. That is worrying. Umar Akmal has captaincy and other agendas, as well as consuming the wrong liquor at the wrong time. As for the issues within the team, everyone knows. You got rid of warriors like Younis and Misbah, and now youre crying. Hafeez sat out because he wanted captaincy and doesnt get on with Malik. You keep Sarfraz down the order because his skills might show and you keep Imad out permanently because he has the soundest batting technique of the lot. Oh and then theres Riaz, another politician in the team. Theres is definitely spot fixing still going on, otherwise people have a right to know what these issues are.

Wy is blaming players for pak's disaster but he's been the coach for the last couple of years. What the hell has he been doing since then? Wy only selects players that he likes. There's no merit in pak cricket. Its all part of corruption and favoritism. Unless we clean up from the top including shehryar khan and najam sethi, trust me they can have 100s of these meetings nothing will change. Main problem at the top these guys have no clue how to put together a winning team. Bunch of losers.

@SAEED MASOOD : Better late than never, Cricket is not finished neither Pakistan lacks talent. There must be few things that have to be kept in right places. PCB should listen to him, analyze it and take right steps in right direction. I remember he has been consistent in pointing out these thing since the start up, he pointed out Shahzad and Umar Akmal for their irresponsible attitude from the day one. He pointed out Afridi as weak decision maker in his last tenure and all are proving right. May be he has been working with these guys in a hope of improvement but no improvement is anyway a failure on his part as well.

Next a committee must be sent to look how and why NZ and AUS consistently produce world class teams and then base PK model on them. NZ has less then 1/10 the population but dominate in both male and female cricket. Why? How? Problem starts at the top, playing musical chairs with the players and managers will change nothing. The whole mess is over 2-3 games that we lost. Games that we had little control over based on the kind of pitches created by our friends in India.
Asia Cup was no different. Bangaldesh created pitches that favoured their players. Pakistanis are at their worst when playing under overcast or rainy conditions.
Defeats are no where treated with as much seriousness as they do in Pakistan. Please accept that sometimes its not the players, its the organisers that should answer for creating biased pitches.

You are root of the problem Mr. Coach. You should have retired long before the Asia Cup. If you ask for the solutions, then there is only one solution. A total clean-up from the management to the players level. Revamp the complete structure. The PM needs to appoint fresh brains and minds - not a 90-year old, as head. Change the complete management, kick out all the so-called seniors and bring new players from Under-21 as well. A new captain for at least two years be appointed. Forget winning for at least two years. Don't worry of the rankings - we are already at the bottom in One-days and T20s, with all these super stars. It will be for better.

Its nice of Waqar to admit there are problems, however as coach he needs to take some responsibility on his shoulders too and resign.
If the PCB are serious about learning from their mistakes, this fact finding mission needs to go beyond just the players and must include the PCB mis-management. It should be carried out by independent people not affiliated to Pakistan cricket in anyway (preferably from the ICC).

@Durgesh Not sure if you read the news, but the economy and security situation have been improving alot, what doesn't help is the neighbours sending agents to jeopardise the situation, SA, AUS and SL got knocked out as well, doe this mean their structures need an overhaul. In Pakistan's case, yes some changes are required, but its not a doom story as many are making it out to be.

There is only one remedy for this type of mess - identify the core team & stick with it for some time. A few years ago, I would have rated Umar Akmal as better than Kohli. India gave Kohli a regular spot in both tests & ODIs. pakistan continues to move Akmal around as if he is a debutant while players of noticably poorer skills are given fixed positions.To me, Akmal should have been at no. 3 or no.4 in this line up. Pakistan should now think of the 2019 WC, decide on a coach till that date & get the strategy thinking started now. If the team starts thinking about strategy after the tournament is over, it can only lead to post mortem. Another aspect of Pakistan's game is that they seem to have forgotten that you can run singles & twos. The team is hell bent on hitting boundaries. You can do that if you are Gayle or Sehwag or Afridi but even Kohli & Dhoni focus on running between wickets. Pakistan also needs a fielding coach.

The question is who manages and how are those 'heroes' groomed. The only problem is absence of sense and spirit of genuine responsibility compatible with the office/position. While Waqar is not entirely blameless you can see in his words that he tried to get these bunch playing together but they just did not perform as required.
Its not waqar's fault that the team cannot rotate strike and play too many dot balls. Am sure they they practice in training but cannot do it on pitch.
Also we need bowlers who can bat. We are 10 years behind in this regard.

Come On! You are the main cause of this catastrophe! Who recommended and ensured that Azhar Ali become ODI Captain? You Did! That is where the mess started from! A player never being part of the team asked to lead despite knowing his deficiency for limited overs games! At the time of Azhar Ali taking over the Captaincy PAK T20 team under the same captain was #2 in ICC Ranking! The started Pak ODIz worst series of losses with 3-0 to Bangladesh till recent with an obvious exception of beating ZIM a team who could not beat Afghanistan, Oman, Ireland or Netherlands to qualify for the ongoing WT20!. So through out Azhar Ali from ODIz both as Captain and batsman, appoint Sarfraz Ahmed as the new Captain fro both ODIz as well as T20z and let him build a team for next WC. At the same time doors should be permanently closed on mediocre-s like Hafeez, Malik and Umer Akmal! Hafeez since 2003 has been a patchy performer and a laughing stock against quality pace-needs to go PLEASE!

PCB is totally a dysfunctional organization. Lead by irrelevant babas and incompetent persons, the outcomes are not surprising. If we still treat the symptoms like bad batting, poor bowling and fielding it will not give the desired results. We will have to address the root causes and induct the game experts on merit. Looking at other teams in T20 it seems that none of our players is fit to play this shortest format of the game.
It is sheer wastage of tax payers money. I would urge the honest tax payers of the country to come out of hibernation and raise their voice and be part of the change rather than a silent spectator. Lets demand the complete overhaul of PCB and make a fresh start.

@Fez That is exactly what Waqar is doing. He is very clever to keep Sarfraz down the order and does not perform compared to when he performed as an opener. He does not like Sarfraz so that is first thing exposed since the World Cup where he should've been dropped. PCB is in politics and in Pakistan, the coach is never held accountable when he declined to answer during the conference about Sarfraz and said, "I don't have time for stupid questions." What did PCB do? Nothing so he got away with it.

As proposed by Imran Khan, make six regional teams and then select best performers through internal competitions. These regional team includes talent from Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, KPK, GP and Azad Kashmir, so that when played at international level, the team must represent whole Pakistan and look like a real team. Currently, cricket team or any other sport is only dominated by Punjab and some patrons from some other areas, which is not a good omen for the unity of the country.

You don't need 3 days fact finding to know what is wrong. Here is what I see :
a. Improve domestic cricket. Make current national team players also take part in them.
b. Select players based on their performance in domestic cricket and not based on how well someone did several years ago or how much potential one has.
c. Give all the support required to those who are selected and hold administrators, selectors and support staff also accountable for the performance of the team.

No, even with better cricketing setup than Pakistan didn't qualify to the next level and I am surprised to see some comments suggesting to to kick out everyone. So when did people realize that whole management setup and players are incompetent ? Still people were expecting from this team to perform miracle and specially against Indian Team. India is on Top because of the services of Players like Ms Dhoni, Virat Kohli who are mentally so strong that they don't give up in any situation. I personally think a mentor like Vivian Richard is needed to Pak Team who could make them realize that with this talent they can beat any team if they play consistent and according to their strength and their strength is their raw talent.

Sharyar,Waqar Afridi and Shoaib Malik have to exit first before any improvement can be made in the team.Sharyar has no decision making powers and looks confused he needs to exit.There are no stars in the present team it is just media hype that makes them stars.Players should be paid in each match as per their performance, their salaries should not be fixed in way that they get paid whether they perform or not. This system has made them lazy.A monitoring body should be established to keep an eye on the selection committee to make them accountable in case a fault is detected.

Unfortunately, we as a nation has a short term memory. I appreciate Waqar Younis here that he did not mention anywhere that what he mentioned couple of years before is the result you can see today. Let people judge by themselves. I remember when he joined as a coach, he stressed on physical fitness and Sr. players like, Misbah and Afridi didn't participate and that attitude sent wrong message to other players and eventually everyone started saying that its not army training, let cricketer be cricketer. You can see the results today. Kohli in his win against Australia specifically mention about such hard core physical fitness. I have no idea when this "Saith sb" culture will go away. It's like cancer in our nature. We're not humble. Lot to change. Good Luck Pakistan and PCB!

Cricket is changed. We have produced players and bowlers who were superb and unstoppable with old ball (both batsman and bowlers). Unfortunately, all this has changed. We can't have ball more than 25 overs old. We need to invest a lot and a lot on new balls and make sure those are available at grass root level so that we can produce worldcall bowler and batsman again. We can still produce batsman and bowler having inborn ability and without need of lot of grooming as we have witnessed in the past. I understand PCB is now have budget limitation. We should not expect govt. at this stage to look at the micro level however, PCB and all Star players like (Wasim, Waqar, Yousaf...) should volunteer themselves and find sponsor on local level who can provide cricket gears, (specially lots of new balls) to Govt. Schools. We have very fertile land, so ground management shouldn't be that hard.

Everyone seems to be angry on board, team, coaching staff etc but the problem is deep rooted which only can be solved with fresh and competent board and re creating the domestic structure of cricket. I can count on my fingers how many schools and colleges organize sports now and have cricket team. Can you name 10 school teams from your city. No one can we now have schools in 5 marla houses and we are angry on team. Street cricket is almost finished and new generation found new hobby in smartphones, whatsapp etc....

do serious selection trials..there is lot of talent..kid playing perfectly doesnt even know when selection trials are done in different cities..it a slow process.like stop by some ground in sialkot peshawar etc.watch kids playing and ask them to come for further trials..trust me i have seen a kid in peshawar a well spoken kid the way he bowls and bat he need to be in the team right away

Structural changes required. More competition in the domestic league and better pay for league players. That'll atleast give reason to youngsters to choose cricket as their career path.
Secondly, personnel changes, from Shahrayar Khan, down to Intikhab Alam and Waqar Younis.
5-6 players in the current team need to be peeled off. Anyone playing politics should be kicked out permanently. Akmal brothers, Malik, Shahzad, Hafeez need to be fired.
Start out fresh. Stick to youngsters and a good foreign coach. Few years down the road we shall bear the fruit of our steps.

Waqar is a gentleman. However, I don't think he is fit to be a coach. The reason being that it's not that he doesn't have the skills to groom players. It's just that he is not very optimistic. He is not a pessimist either. But as a coach, one needs to be unrealistically optimistic. This kind of positive energy transfers into the players and they start performing better. But if you judge the players, the negativity will affect their performance. Misbah should retire and become coach.

Plus, all the names you have mentioned were infact the legacy of the Great Khan. So with proper personnel who dont have vested interests, talent can be found. Just look at Yasir Shah, he has a long way to go, but he had all the talent in the world. Inzamams first day out was a semi final and would you not argue one of Younis or Yousuf are all time great batsmen. So no, I dont think finding talent is an issue, its about developing batsmen. Bowlers come by the truck load.

Look at Shehzad and Maqsood, their batting style has become like Misbah because he as a captain taught to play defensively. They play like a test match in ODI. Shehzad will not change so he needs to be dropped permanently along with Akmal, Malik, Hafeez and Afridi. We need new talent with new players groomed. But will not let this happen so Pakistan will continue to be the worst cricket team in history. I won't be surprised if Afganistan goes above Pakistan in ranking since they play better than Pakistan.

So its not that Pakistan cricket is behind, its that the batsmen dont know the art of occupying the crease. Umar Akmal is more talented than Kohli, but he doesnt know how to pinch ones or turn ones into twos. Plus he is more motivated by money. These basic flaws are keeping them behind.

@Wasi Afridi is only in t20's. He is not a batsman. So him staying isnt that dangerous. For tests, Misbah needs to stay long as possible. There is nobody after him, maybe Asad Shafiq. Maqsood is a flop player, who has vested interests. Shehzad and Akmal need to learn how to rotate the strike, this is all. They are not copying anyones style. Misbah only became defensive because the rest of the batting was a joke.

I think culture does not change overnight. Any player can become better if he applies himself. Often times i feel that our players lack mental strength. I think PCB should start imposing college level education as a requirement to be part of domestic system. Those who cannot afford and are talented should be given scholorships to study.
Talent/ Potential alone is not sufficient any more to succeed.

I fail to understand why Afridi is creating such hullabaloo around his retirement when eveeything around him, from captaincy to bowling and batting perfermance, clear points towards his time over as a cricketer.
Why does it have to be Misbah and Yunus to be in the Performance review panel when 1) they still continue to represent pakistan in test cricket 2) Misbah himself has been part of bringing about this turmoil.

We have heroes but you never gave him a chance i.e. Sarfaraz. He is regarded as one of the best batsman by Ian Chappell etc. but is being completely ignored by you, why?
He did not come to bat until the match was already lost, why?. He has scored centuries and fifties as a opener then why was he held back? If he did not want to bat up (which I doubt it) why was he not encouraged to do so for the sake of the team?
Unless you stop this Punjabi, Karachi etc culture and stop favoring individuals based on where they come from instead of merit, the result will always be a zero. Treat everyone with respect and give credit where due and you will have a successful team. It is as simple and it is not a rocket science.

We need a complete overhaul in PCB starting from the top. If you take a look at the matches you can see that there was no team spirit and I knew that Pakistan would not win. We need fresh, educated and capable administrators and qualified foreign coaches-we do not need semi-literate cricketers to run the affairs of PCB. Second look at the domestic set-up, identify and coach up and coming young players, around whom we can build a new team. It will take time, but there are no short cuts. The last, but not the least, the institution of PCB. should be an independent entity, answerable to perhaps ministry of sports and leisure.

The complete present set up of the PCB should be " Cleared out ", as they have collectively failed.
PCB should also conduct a " Clean up operation " of the present team, as non performers need to be shown the door. In Pakistan we need to adopt a management style of " Performance based retention ".
In other words non performers have ZERO justification to be included in the National Side.
Once you set this bench mark, the performance will automatically rise.
The principle is simple ..........either you can perform at the Top Level or Not.

You are supposed to coach ,not make political statements to cover up your own inadequacies.
How demoralizing would it be for any player to know that their coach does not cover for them.
He has lost moral authority to coach and should be removed immediately if he does not resign himself.

With all respect Waqar who was a great bowler has failed as clearly not all greats are good leaders. Pak must use head and not hearts and fond memories to make key appointments. Imran Khan is too busy with politics to get involved, Wasim Akram too busy with tv work so I guess that leaves Shoaib Akhtar.

Coach had taken the couch for so long and now all of a sudden when all is lost woke up and started highlighting all wrongs. Where was he when out team needed his services. Now that every one is on list list for exit. He remembers everything . This behaviour gives an impression that our coach lacks character.

No coach can be successful with pakistani team,just look at the past 10 years,I can not see any successful coach,the main reason pakistani players don't implementin the field what is coached to them.
Who has stopped Wahab,Irfan,Afridi,Malik and Sami to put the ball in the right areas,I did not mention Amir,he is better and bowls well.
Who has stopped all the batsmen including Umer Akmal,Malik,Hafeez,Ahmed Shahzad etc to perform consistently?
I am sure no coach wants this.He guides and counsels them to improve their performances.
I have heard mostly coaches complained that players don't implement in the field and don't act as their given roles.

Waqar the nation has been embarrassed enough, so no need to not the nation know the whole story. Time to be transparent . No more protecting people. If you can't do that just leave. Your apology may be sincere but time to go. The PCB needs to be cleaned also. This debacle has proved their incompetency, how over the years they have successfully ruined the standard of the national team and disgraced the country. No apologies needed just leave. We have talent but they cannot see it. The PCB has failed successfully .

Well we as a nation also has some responsibility. Shahid Afridi has been our hero and Misbah has been criticized ( though stats show a different picture altogether ). Making Afridi captain was the blunder.

That was an interesting assessment by the coach. He put the blame on the structure and lack of ability in players who were under his command for more than 2 years.
I think it was more of a lack of common sense and self belief. Instill some cricketing common sense was coach job that he utterly failed and at the same time Waqar blaming his players and putting them down like this during and after the tournament suggest what kind of nurturing and inspirational environment he was promoting in the dressing room.

We dont need heroes, we need professional sportsmen who honour the role of representing their country. We also need professional coaches who know how to deliver and bind a team towards goals-not 'has been' free boarders who were over the hill long ago. The only solace for Pakistani's is through sports. We have no dearth of talent and heart winners-don't let such pathetic people subdue our legacy. shahid afridi is the most over rated player i have seen till date virat kohli is playing since 2008 and has almost corssed 8000 runs but shahid sfridi who is playing when virat was a baby has still not been able to score more than 8000 runs in international odis as he is playing for pakistan since 1996

It was unfortunate that Pakistan crashed out in first round.. But that doesnt alter the fact that Pakistan is the best team in the world today.. Look at Afridi's performance against Bangladesh 49 off just 19 balls against a bowling attack which even Australia found difficult to play.. We have Akmal and Shehzad who are way more talented than Kohli who is nothing but a fluke.. And we have the best bowler in the world Amir..

If you and your other officials were that good in judgement and skills then why the debacle? Why was Afridi chosen captain when he has proved to be inconsistent and irresponsible as a player. It's really not rocket science to solve these issues, as long as PCB, and the selectors follow one golden rule "Honesty" and "Merit" These words may sound strange to some in the country where "bribes" and "influence peddling" are used in lieu of honesty and merit.

Is the Pakistan team psychologically capable of taking on pressure? I have seen other teams are able to handle pressure far better than ours. Why do we panic and fail miserably? I am sure all of our players know how to play cricket. We need to have the confidence to perform better and win. Our players need psychological counselling.

If the PCB management believe in merit, there is no place on earth then Pakistan that they can find best cricket players. There should be one point agenda on PCB's contract management with players, that there should be no contract beyond 5 years with performing players, Period.

The same agenda contract management should be applied on team management i.e. contract should not go beyond 5 years if they perform. In addition to that, there should be a proper performance management system in place for players and team management for each year during the contract, Period.

Your are coaching from three years, how many heroes did you produce? The entire period of Pakistan cricket team under Waqar Younis coaching is history of decline and failures. Better he resign and allow someone else to take over with better coaching skills.
