‘World T20 disaster was a collective failure’: Mohammad Hafeez

Mohammad Hafeez termed Pakistan’s disastrous exit from the recently concluded World Twenty20 a ‘collective failure’ of the team and vowed to support the newly-appointed T20 skipper Sarfraz Ahmed.
“Pointing fingers at an individual is not fair. All of us failed at the World T20,” said the veteran batsman.
“I failed as well,” he added.
Hafeez praised the Pakistan Cricket board’s (PCB) decision to replace Shahid Afridi with wicketkeeper Sarfraz who has been with the national side since 2007 but rose through the ranks in the last couple of years.
“The decision [to appoint Sarfraz] is positive and there is continuity about it,” said Hafeez.
“We will work together and take this team to a position where the fans want to see it,” he added.
Hafeez also supported the recent steps taken by the Board following Pakistan’s dismal performances in limited overs cricket.
Along with the skipper’s resignation, the national side’s head-coach also quit his job and the selection committee was also dissolved.
“Any steps taken with the intention of improving things should be backed,” said Hafeez.
Pakistan’s next assignment comes after a long break when they take on England on a full tour which will consist of four Tests, five one-dayers and one Twenty20.
The tour kicks off from July 16.

He is right. In a team you stand as a team and you fall as a team.
There is no I in a team. If you work together then you conquer but if you work as individuals then you fail but sometimes you just tip your hat to the opposition because on that day and time the opposition was better and you have to just accept it.

Collective or individual failure but it is not about the world cup only. This team has been defeated in 90% of the ODIs and T20s for last 3 years.

Steps in right direction, but to make the unit work in comprehensive way there should be one leadership for ODI and T20 cricket.
Scheme and policies should be identical for all formats of cricket. To make this change a success Sarfraz should also lead ODI cricket...

Yes the entire team (and that includes the selectors, the administrators, the managers, the coaches, and the players) failed and therefore should all be fired. I will give this much to the "professor" that he is bold enough to own his failure, unlike the manager, coach and captain who just passed on the blame.

Hafeez is trying to cement his place for the tour of England. The new selection committee to see each player's performance against weaker teams and against stronger team playing overseas. I believe our fast bowlers will rock in English conditions but the batsmen will struggle.

From what I have seen I do not believe Sarfraz is the right choice for captain. I am not impressed either by his game or personality. If no one else can do it we should put an end to our cricket till we fix PCB and our players. This is humiliating. Am I the only one embarrassed by our cricket? Doesn't our PM see it?

use one criteria perfomance. those players only be selected who have played atleast 60 % of the domestic cricket for which they are considered. 3-4 top batsman 3-4 top bowlers 1 top wicket keeper and 1-2 top allrounders in the domestic circuit no Parchi no liking no stars should be allowed.

I don't know why is everyone getting excited. Our ODI team sucks as well. It's time to reform. Get rid of Azhar Ali as well. In few months time, we will be talking about that. We only have 3 more T20 matches for the rest of the year and a good few ODI. It's time to change things around. Azhar Ali should resign in dignity or he should know what's coming his way.

It is not enough just to say that "all of us failed". The question is why did you fail in the WC, Asia Cup and then in the T20 WC? There is a major overhaul needed in the PCB and the team. Other, the team will keep failing, the captain will keep changing and cricket will keep going down the drain.

You are correct Professor , in this case we need to get rid off you and rest of your cronies you call professional crickers with you. So we can start over and with new young talent we need a real leader who can run PCB affairs on daily basis. Like Imran said fix your root cause before making big changes. In this case, most of the cronies still holding their positions and few are paying the price. That is not enough sack Sethi and rest of PCB administrator and bring professional folks and run it like a freaking business.

Hafeez, as a captain, also failed in 2014. He hasn't learned or improved since then. How long is his learning curve supposed to be?
This time Shoaib Malik (as a bowler) said he isn't afraid of Kohli, and Kohli smacked him left right and centre, all over the ground. in 2014, Hafeez as a captain said he isn't afraid of Saqlain's boys; and he and all in green couldn't read the WI bowling.
Does Hafeez and company not remember their unauthorised statements to the media compounded by their brilliant performance after? Pathetic!
Hafeez is not a T20 player, all fingers should point at him. 2014 - 2016 and zero improvement.

This is our problem ..... one player has taken responsibility for team's failure and we bash him ...... anyone here remembers afridi's statement he made at airport following 2014 t20 wc ....... afridi blamed the captain i.e hafeez and instead offered himself as the future captain.

Babar Azam should play instead of those half batsman half bowlers like haseeb abd malik even after so many years thet aren't be cob e proper fit cricketers or sportsman, inject new legs abd new blog abd focus on domestic cricket inject only there abd coaches instead staged psl

For once I agree with the professor - I hope he and other Pakistani players support the new captain and keep cricket as much away from politics as possible. PCB should root out elements which WILL facilitate friction and a row between Gaddafi vs Rest of Pakistan. Those who are saying that Sarfraz is not a captain material definitely advancing a particular agenda for their own interest.

Great job Hafeez, have ever notice all big matches, Hafeez takes brake with injury excuse. He know guns will fire heavy if he fails so just hides. Hefeez, Shahzad, Akmal, need permanent brake. they have been around so long but never deliver, they need retire.

This keeping quiet is not a solution. Why don't PCB announce the findings of the committee they formed. It is obvious that team failed due to bad planning by the top management. Why did they hire incapable coaches? Howcome people like Wasim Akram are training in India while our own team is using an unknown bowling coach? Why a batting coach is hired from Zimbabwe while people like Miandad are present in the country.

I Think Hafeez did not oerform as bad as some others. Besides that he has been a good ambassador of country. If we drop players like Umar akmal, Ahmed Shehzad and hopefully Malik, Irfan and Afridi also then perhaps we should continue with at least some experienced and non political players like Hafeez.

Mr Professor is acting like a spokesperson of PCB, he himself is a burden on team, selfish old players need to go home instead of trying to please the board and cementing place in the team for next 5 years. The problem of Pakistan cricket is lack of accountability, all of these players should be thrown out and younger players may be given chance and most importantly BABA ji who is the the head of the board need to resign but this is Pakistan where there is no place for honor and honesty..

This guy cannot run between the wicket but runs his mouth all the time, when team is in crisis he gets injured because he know if he fails he will be thrown out, i know him personally when he used to play cricket in Sargodha and his nick name was "Chanda" the guy is 40+ my elder brother who is 5 years older than me was his class fellow and i am 40 years old. This guy is fooling not only cricket fans but also PCB, a cunning character who is very fond of politics in the team, the drama he created against Amir's inclusion in the team was also to show the world that he has principles but in reality he is a very selfish guy.

We need to make him Captain of ODI team as well. He should be groomed under Misbah as being his deputy in the test side.
He should be given fresh faces in limited overs and all tested horses shall be sent back to domestic cricket for time immortal.

Dam right you are Hafiz, give you credit for acknowledging the teams shortcomings. But you must also accept that you do not operate as a team and that top to bottom you lot are thoroughly indisciplined and big headed bigots. Your place in the team demands your full allegiance to the training structures put in place by your coach and managers; excellence comes with continuous learning. Don't think any of you believe in that. You all consider yourself to be jack of all trade, period. Your inconsistent batting, bowling and fielding firmly supports my conclusion. Don't really know how to knock sense into grown ups who behave like kids. Would like some suggestions from you for a change!

Time to say good bye to Hafeez, Shahzad, Akmal, Malik, Sami, Afridi & Irfan from T20 and One Day squad. Next World T20 is in 2020 and One Day Wold Cup in 2019, please drop them all immediately to build a side for those future events.

In my view Team Pakistan failed at T20 World Cup 2016 because (1) PCB is run by incompetent individuals; (2) Inferior domestic cricket structure with no young talent being groomed; (3) Wrong squad was selected; (4) Wrong to continue with Afridi as Captain or keep him in the squad given his poor performance as leader and player over last 12-18 months; (5) During the T20 matches wrong XI selected with players like Sarfraz wasted as he and others batted in the wrong order. Playing too many fast bowlers and not playing Nawaz at all during the World T20 tournament also a mistake. (6) Wrong management and coaching staff and the inability to man manage; (7) Disruptive elements and possibly grouping within the team; (7) Too many unwanted outside influences.

We all know that cricket is number game. Runs are given as target and team to win chase that target successfully. It does not matter how team gets run (singles or in 6s, clean shot, lucky slip, or runs on dropped catches). So, Pakistan should decide team using numbers and nothing else. As batsmen, 3 things are important: Fielding, Ave and SR. For bowlers, 4 things are important: Fielding, Ave, ER and SR. W/K should not drop more than 10 % of certain catches and stumping chances, and should have reasonable batting Ave and SR. Obviously, W/K can have lower Ave and SR than batsmen. Sarfraz is a good batsman and good W/K, so we can take his batting figures (Ave and SR) as guide.
Unfortunately Shahazd, Hafeez, Akmal brothers or Malik … none have Ave or SR better than Sarfraz (in Test or T20I), so how can these Parchi players continue playing for Pakistan team is mystery. They should all be dropped and new players should be given chance (on merit).

Pakistan should select players using performance figures, and give them chance in at least 10 innings and after that evaluate the player. If their figures are bad, discard them if not continue with them. Players like Hafeez, Shoaib, Shahzad, Umar or Kamran ... all should be dropped as they do not qualify to be in team on merit. Their performance figures are even worse than Sarfaraz. Here are the figures:
Test and T20I figures of certain players. We should remember that Sarfraz opened Pakistani innings with Shahzad too, and in almost all those match Sarfraz performed better (with better Ave and SR).
Test:
Sarfraz: Ave 47, SR 75. ..
Hafeez: Ave 41, SR 57. ..
Shoaib: Ave 35, SR 46. ..
Shahzad: Ave 43, SR 53. ..
Umar: Ave 36, SR 66. ..
Kamran: Ave 31, SR 63. ..
T20I:
Sarfraz: Ave 29, SR 120. ..
Hafeez: Ave 23, SR 115. ..
Shoaib: Ave 27, SR 113. ..
Shahzad: Ave 25, SR 114. ..
Umar: Ave 27, SR 123. ..
Kamran: Ave 21, SR 120. ..

I am in complete disagreement with Hafeez. When PCB upper managent decided to intervene in the dressing room and overriding the coach's or the captain's directions then they have certainly set up the entire team for failure. Mr. Hafeez, if you can offer criticism to Mohamma Amir's inclusion to the team then you can certainly come forth with the explicit cause of the recent failures as well.
