ISLAMABAD: The federal government banned Ashir Azeem's film Maalik nationwide in a notification issued Wednesday.
The Ministry of Information, Broadcasting, and National Heritage issued a notification declaring the Urdu feature film "uncertified" according to Section 9 of the Motion Pictures Ordinance, 1979.
Director Ashir Azeem also tweeted the ban.
The film, released three weeks ago, had generated complaints regarding its controversial depiction of the Taliban and parallels with the assassination of a prominent government official by his personal security guard.
In a blink-and-you'll miss it move last night, the Sindh government decided to ban the film Maalik and then revoked that notice all in the space of a few hours.
The culture ministry had drafted a notification ordering a ban on the movie for being ‘biased’ and inciting violence.
However, before it was formally issued, the Sindh chief minister intervened and asked the ministry not to issue it as it would be ‘against the freedom of expression’.
The film team had assured the Sindh government objectionable scenes would be cut, but the film's certification was revoked as it wasn't done.
Cinemas cancel shows, refund tickets
Local cinemas have cancelled the movie's shows with immediate effect and are refunding the tickets following the ban imposed on the film.

I haven't seen the movie but if it advocates 'killing' of political leaders based upon individual perceptions then I am against it. We already have enough hatred in our society. Criticizing corruption based upon your perception is fine - advocating violence is not.

I have not seen the movie but what I hear about it being critical of Talibans, it not only has to be banned but also the makers should be punished. I have not watched this movie but a movie from Aashir Azeem is unlikely to be anti-Pakistan. He gave one of all times best and patriotic drama ' Dhuwaan' 20- 25 yrs ago.
Government likely banned it because it might have been close to reality and corrupt politicians. As they know from inside that they are corrupt and anti Pakistan, they could not let it go unlike in a democratic country. People will watch it anyways, more than it was expected.

Well done Ashir azeem. For those who don't know this person. He was a customs official (in his real life )had to go through some tough challenges at his job as well. I remember his drama Duwan. Super hit and excellent drama, best at its time.
I suggest Ashir should release this movie on DVD. I want to watch this movie.

Any program that depicts corruption will be banned. There was a television show moam ki guriya in the mid 1990s that was banned all of a sudden due to drugs and bureaucracy reference. Also fankar gali was another tv serial banned. Anything that creates a ripple affect depicting the social ills of the society will be stopped

Anyways, banning Maalik will not reduce the strength of viewers , instead curiosity will increase and Maalik will get high rating in electronic and print media of pakistan, ultimately more people wish to watch it and no expenditures for sponsoring and advertising it.
in reality, faderal govt and sindh govt did not ban it, instead they approved it so that more people watch it. congrate to Ashir Azeeem.

We need to abolish censorship in Pakistan. Freedom of expression ought to be a fundamental right protected by the law, but article 19 in the Constitution has enough holes in it to drive a truck through it.
US Constitution, First Amendment, sets the gold standard worldwide.

@syed It’s a shame, but it proves the power of cinema; way back in the 90’s there was a film made by Iqbal Kashmiri called ‘Sarak’ staring Mohsin Khan, Babar Ali and Sultan Rahi. In which a politician was portrayed as a villain who rapes and kills the hero’s sister played by an actress called Roop. But at that time no one raised any issue or banned the movie. The reason was at that time no one took the film industry seriously. With the improvement of film industry today and the good quality of productions every one took notice of ‘Maalik’. I am eager to see this movie hope they don’t ban this movie in the USA and UK.

All media including press and tv be instructed to follow the ethics and don't air and or support Taliban or their supporters and instead create a nationalism in the masses and discard/dismiss/disown/dislike pro taliban feeling amongst the masses telling them how hard is it say to build a school that Taliban blows up with a bomb and peace is what we need for developments in our society for collective and individual uplift...

PM Nawaz Sharif is avoiding Panama leaks investigation. Instead, he is assaulting democracy. Banning film "Maalik" is an assault on freedom of expression. Using PTV to show official parliament speeches but block opposition speeches is an assault on democracy. To withhold government advertisements from newspapers and TV channels calling for accountability of corrupt politicians is assault on democracy. The list goes on. Such abuse of power must end. We want democracy with "accountability" of the government and politicians. No one can be above the law.

@50 Shades of Khaki Its called Vigilante Justice and it actually is a theme of many movies and tv shows. V for Vendetta, Arrow, Batman, Watchmen etc ther're all vigilantes. If vigilance itself is a threat to democracy then I suggest:
Ban all content portraying Vigilante Justice. That includes Western material. After all, Democracy is all about equality isn't it.

Film by a minority member targeting the corrupt elite is not acceptable by the establishment ! Film does have conflicting ideas and does depict very hardcore realities and filth of our current society .

Extremely unjustified act by the government. Freedom of expression is sabotaged, the film gives a blink picture of inefficient political elites in implementing law against non state actors and a reflection of Pakistan's ongoing stumbling policy against corruption. The decision would be paved way for harboring the Corrupt political mafia, or i would assert white collar looters. The country where Premiers of the state are scuffling in the scandals like Panama leaks, what else could one expect. Cyber crime bill, PTV, Censor board and all the stuff are armed wings of politicians to steer the country not taking any positive step against bleak crimes of politicians. I as a Pakistani strongly condemn the censorship of the movie. Black day for denizens of Pakistan and monstrous blow for Freedom of speech.

This is what is wrong with the Pakistan government. Freedom of speech is always crushed one way or another. Why not let the people decide weather to watch the film or not. Pakistan is loosing millions in revenue and filmmaker and producers are also losing money.
