SUKKUR: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mehmood Qureshi has called for an across-the-board accountability of corrupt people in the country.

Addressing the District Bar Association in Sukkur, he said Imran Khan was expected to visit the city but he could not come because of a busy schedule.

He said opposition parties were trying to make a joint strategy against the government in the wake of the links of the prime minister’s family to Panama Papers. In this connection, a meeting of opposition parties would be held on May 2. The meeting would discuss the ToRs (terms of reference) for the judicial commission being formed to investigate the Panama leaks, he added.

He stressed the need for an active role of lawyers in the movement against corruption. He said lawyers had always played an important role in movements against military dictators and for the supremacy of law in the country.

Earlier, PTI chairman Imran Khan who was scheduled to arrive in Sukkur on April 30 to lead a rally in connection with his party’s ‘eliminate corruption and save country’ campaign has cancelled his visit reportedly because of differences among senior party leaders, sources claimed.

According to these sources, there was a disappointment among PTI workers in Sindh since it was announced that the party chairman was not visiting the province.

They said the PTI chief had cancelled his visit to Sindh because of differences between senior party leaders Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Jahangir Tareen.

Informed sources told Dawn that Mr Qureshi’s differences with other PTI had deepened because of his soft stance towards his previous party, the PPP.

They said in a recent meeting with PPP leaders Aitzaz Ahsan and Syed Khursheed Shah, Mr Qureshi had agreed to consider rejoining the PPP. In his speeches during PTI’s rallies under the party’s movement against corruption in Sindh Mr Qureshi avoided criticising the PPP, they added.
