Shop owner’s brother ‘mixed’ poison in sweets

LAYYAH: The mystery of 31 deaths caused by poisonous sweetmeats was resolved on Thursday when the younger brother of the sweet shop owner reportedly confessed to have mixed pesticide in the products.
Khalid Mahmood, younger brother of shop owner Tariq Mahmood, told police that he spiked the sweetmeats with pesticide after exchange of words with his elder sibling “to teach him a lesson”.
A police official, on condition of anonymity, told Dawn that Khalid confessed to have mixed a liquid pesticide, ‘Exeed’, in the material being prepared for manufacturing sweetmeats at the shop owned by his elder brother.
He said on the identification of Khalid, the police recovered the bottle of pesticide he used to poison the sweetmeats that claimed the lives of 31 people.
The police high-ups would brief the media on the case in a day or two, the official said.
Fatehpur police produced Khalid Mahmood in the court of area magistrate of Karor Lal Esan late on Thursday evening where he recorded his confessional statement.

Even pesticide poisoning should nit claim 31 lives. Death toll should have been much lower. Antidote is atropine , which is easily available.

This is not failure of one or two individuals but society and state as a whole. We see events of torture, unfair behavior around us but no action is ever taken. Neither by society nor by state. and then this happens.

He murdered 31 innocent people including children to teach his older brother 'a lesson' after exchanging a few harsh words? Well, he will probably hang for this and that is the lesson society will teach him. Then comes God and then he will understand what a lesson really is and how long it an last.

Have we become a brittle society? Snapping too quickly and swinging to extremes?
We need to revive art in our society and get in touch with our softer side. That might bring depth in our personalities and make us mellow.
And I have no reason to doubt police version. Deaths of so many innocents may have weighed in on the individual. Too late for the victims unfortunately.

This doesn't change the fact that the real culprit is our healthcare system. There would have been a lot less casualties if the victims had fast and adequate access to poisoning treatment facilities. There are very few instantly lethal toxic compounds, and this pesticide was definitely not one of them.

Many lessons here... apart from the obvious,
Avoid having processed sweets.
Avoid vegetables that have pesticide sprayed on them
Sale of pesticide should be only limited to farmers
Tolerance is the modern word that needs to be taught in schools.

My heart weeps first at the loss of 31 precious lives, and then more vehemently at the apathy on part of the perpetrator, who was so cruel and carefree in his 'teaching a lesson to own brother', performed the most gruesome act.

I don't buy that. I have an inkling its just face saving. The government should raid sweet shops across the country to check the ingredients they're using. A precedent has already been set. I have heard that a sweet shop in Peshawar has rented two homes where the owner is stocking mithai for Eid. How can mithai stay fresh for so long? Something serious to ponder about.
